Catholic Health Initiatives, the nation’s second-largest faith-basedhealth system, was formed in 1996to strengthen the Catholic healthministry for the future. With deeproots in the tradition of expressingChrist’s love by caring for those inneed, Catholic Health Initiativesserves more than four million peopleeach year through acute care hospi-tals; long-term care, assisted- andresidential-living facilities; commu-nity-based health services; homecare; research and development; and reference laboratory services.

As the first Catholic health system to give lay people a sponsorship role in its facilities, Catholic HealthInitiatives honors its history while advancing its health ministry.

CATHOLIC HEALTH IN IT IAT IVESCurrent initiatives include:

 OneCare, a $1.5 billion, five-year investment thatwill transform the delivery of health care through uni-versal electronic health records.

 More than 80 telehealth programs that are alleviating provider shortages and expanding access to specialty care in remote areas.

 A national home care organization that will deliver care to more patients in the comfort of theirown homes.

Catholic Health Initiatives retains its commitment toits Mission and Vision through special programs thatbuild and sustain healthy communities and pursue social justice. These include:

 The Mission and Ministry Fund, which hasawarded 311 grants totaling more than $38.4 millionfor new programs to promote and sustain healthycommunities.

 The Direct Community Investment program, which has provided more than $44 million in no- or low-interest loans to organizations that promote access to jobs, housing, education and health care.

 Community Benefit programs — such as free clin-ics and donations of food, equipment and supplies toaddress the needs of people who are poor or under-served — and charity care, which totals more than$612 million annually across the organization.

With a steadfast commitment to serving those inneed, Catholic Health Initiatives seeks to leverage itssize, diversity, geographic coverage and resources onbehalf of the most vulnerable members of society.

 A Social Responsibility Investment Policy that ex-cludes investments in companies linked to abortion orto nuclear, chemical or biological weapons; and thatsupports the filing of shareholder resolutions related to social justice issues, such as pharmaceutical pricerestraint and limits on tobacco advertising.

 Through its systemwide United Against Violencecampaign, Catholic Health Initiatives seeks to reduceand prevent violence in the communities it serves.

The Mission of Catholic Health Initiatives is to nurture the healing ministry of the Church by bringing it new life, energy and viability in the 21st century. Fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we move toward the creation of healthier communities.

To fulfill this Mission, Catholic Health Initiatives, as a values-driven organization, will:

 Assure the integrity of the healing ministry in both current and developing organizations and activities;

 Develop creative responses to emerging health care challenges;

 Promote mission integration and leadership formation throughout the entire organization;

 Create a national Catholic voice that advocates for systemic change and influences health policy with specific concern for persons who are poor, alienated and underserved; and

 Steward resources by general oversight of the entire organization.

Our Vision is to live up to our name as One CHI:

Catholic: Living our Mission and Core Values.

Health: Improving the health of the people and communities we serve.

Initiatives: Pioneering models and systems of care to enhance care delivery.

Reverence: Profound respect and awe for all of creation, the foundation that shapes spirituality, our relationships with others and our journey to God.

Integrity: Moral wholeness, soundness, fidelity, trust, truthfulness in all we do.

Compassion: Solidarity with one another, capacity to enter into another’s joy and sorrow.Excellence: Preeminent performance, becoming the benchmark, putting forth our personal and professional best.

People— Develop top talent and a culture of leadership in health care practices.

Quality— Achieve leadership in person-centered care.

Stewardship — Steward resources and invest to innovate and excel in meeting our communities’ needs.

Growth — Grow and diversify locally and nationally to extend our ministry.
