Jammin’ On the Uke

Jamming means playing along with other musicians, usually without any paper music. Step one is to identify what key the song is in. Here are three ways to identify the key:

1. Ask, “What key is this in?” 2. Look at another player’s fingering. In case you’re the

only uke player in the group, this may require knowledge of guitar or other instruments.

3. Figure out what note the song starts with. That’s usually the key.

Number 3 is best done softly, or when listening to a recording trying to figure out the chords. Along with hearing the chords for jamming, you can simultaneously learn how to “reverse engineer,” which means figure out a song’s chords from a recording. A good way to practice jamming is to try playing along with your favorite recordings. Start with simple songs, that don’t sound like they have a lot of different chords. Country and blues are mostly at most three or four chords. The best way to get started is to learn the simplest and most common chord progression, which in music theory is called the I IV V7. The only reason you need to know even that much theory is that jam leaders sometimes call out “one” “five” “four” instead of the names of chords because they have capos on their instruments and they don’t know what chords they’re playing.

Page 4: DENVER UKE COMMUNITY August... · 2016-01-30 · theory, only that that’s the first minor chord to try when you hear a minor. If that’s the wrong minor, the other two suspects

There are other progressions that are worth learning, but that one covers about a billion songs. A lot of songs that have more difficult chords can be played as a simple I IV V7 progression, occasionally with a minor chord added. The most common minor chord added is the relative minor for the key. You really don’t need to know the theory, only that that’s the first minor chord to try when you hear a minor. If that’s the wrong minor, the other two suspects to try can be found by this method: On the chart, look at the key that matches the name of the relative minor chord of the key you’re in. For C, this would be A. Now, look at the IV and V chords for that key. For A, this would be D and E. The other two minors you’re likely to find in the key of C are Dm and Em. Many complicated songs can be simplified to a I IV V7 progression. A lot of the fancy advanced chords in songs are just the basic chords on the chart with a melody note added. Speaking of melody, it’s a great idea to learn to play melodies in some of the different keys. Eventually, once you can jam (improvise) on chords and melody, it’s possible to do both together at the same time. That takes a lot of practice, and it isn’t something I have time to teach right now. Learning to play songs without having all the chords written out on paper is an amazing feeling, and it’s not as difficult as it may seem. The following chart is a simplified version of a one I learned from when I was 11, and the advantage over other charts is that it’s arranged by how the chords relate to one another in each of the 12 keys.
