Cattle Feeding Study – Internship Fall 2017

Sainz Lab is STILL seeking reliable student interns to assist in an ongoing beef cattle study. The aim of the study is to phenotype steers into various rankings of feed efficiency to find a possible relation between feed utilization and liver mitochondrial efficiency. Internships are unpaid but university credit can be available at the rate of 3hrs/week per unit. Duties include feeding cattle daily, handling (i.e., moving animals to be weighed), blood and fecal sampling, and data collection. Students must be willing to work weekdays and weekends. Feeding shifts will be in the University Feedlot on 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM and bi-weekly weigh days on Tuesdays starting October 3rd. Looking for students who can start IMMEDIATELY. If interested, please fill out a short questionnaire at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GDPK9QS and email Elmer Fernandez ([email protected]).

Fall 2017 Internship opportunity: Dairy Calf Disbudding Study

Seeking hard-working and reliable students to assist with data collection at the UC Davis Dairy Facility. The aim of the study is to understand how long pain lasts after disbudding by "asking"

disbudded calves if they prefer an environment that is paired with pain relief. Interns would gain hands-on experience working with the calves, as well as experience with data entry and

management. Unpaid but university credit can be arranged.

Fall 2017 Internship opportunity: Dairy Cow Cooling Study Seeking hard-working and reliable students to assist with video watching data collection for a project that took place at the UC Davis

Dairy Facility investigating the cooling effects of various technologies on cows over the

summer.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the use of four different cooling methods for the cows,

and their effectiveness and resource efficiency.

Interns would gain experience observing and

recording cow behavior from videos recorded during the study.

The internship is unpaid but university

research credit can be arranged.

Interns must be available throughout the entire fall quarter. The shifts are flexible within the 8am-5pm hours on weekdays. The requirement is 6-8 hours a week. If interested, please submit the following by Friday, September 8th: (1) resume (2) unofficial copy of UCD transcript (3) cover letter*

*In the cover letter please include the following: • Your availability throughout the week. • Relevant coursework and experience, including any experience with cattle or previous

video watching. (Not required) • Interest in animal welfare and behavior • Contact information for 2 professional or academic references

Fall 2017 Internship opportunity: Dairy Cow Nitrogen Utilization and Methane Emissions

Study

The trial objective is to study the effect of fibrolytic enzymes supplementation on nitrogen utilization and methane emissions in dairy cattle.

The 2-2.5 month study will take place at the university dairy facility and the Cole Facility. The trial will begin September 21st.

Interns will be trained to feed and manage dairy cows, perform sample collection (feed, blood, urine, and feces), and subsequent lab analysis. Interns will gain research experience in dairy nutrition as well as hands-on skills in livestock husbandry.

Shifts will be in the mornings and afternoons, along with few intensive sampling periods throughout the study.

Interested students should email their resume to Joslyn Mendez at [email protected] for an interview.

**If you cannot be there for the first week, it is ok to begin with Fall quarter. You should still apply***

Synthetic Biology, Protein Diversity & Function

The Hess Lab is working to identify and characterize carbohydrate active enzymes from the microbial community inhabiting the cow rumen. We are looking for students who are interested in utilizing synthetic biology techniques to explore enzyme diversity and function within this rich microbiome. Interns working in the Hess Lab will learn and apply microbiological, biochemical, and bioinformatic techniques to help characterize industrially relevant enzymes. Applicants should be willing to work ~10hrs/week in the lab during each quarter. Requirements: good academic standing, excellent academic performance, team player, good record keeping, and analytical skills. Applicants should have knowledge of (or at least strong interest in) one of these areas: Biological or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology.
