DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
The aim of the department of civil engineering is to ensure that graduates will have a
mastery of fundamental knowledge, problem solving skills, engineering experimental
abilities, and design capabilities necessary for entering civil engineering career and/or
pursuing higher studies and to prepare students to enter a modern civil engineering
workforce and to be successful in their career and profession.
Courses Offered are
1. BE (Civil Engineering)
2. ME
3. Ph.D
Vision: The vision of the department is to give an exposure to budding civil technocrats
to various challenges in the profession. The department with its multifaceted faculty
members continues to maintain and cultivate strong links with infrastructure industry and
academic and research institutions within and outside the country.
Mission: The mission of the department is to provide quality education to prepare
nationally competitive undergraduate students for a successful career in civil engineering;
to provide advanced skills and knowledge in state-of-the-art research and design in sub-
areas of civil engineering for graduate students; and to provide service to the university,
engineering profession, and the public.
CIVIL ENGINEERING LABORATORIES
SURVEYING LAB
This laboratory involves learning the
basic principle of surveying, measuring
of distance, direction and elevation in
the field by using various instruments
like chains, measuring tapes, theodolite,
dumpy level, tacheometer also used in
calculating longitudinal profile of road,
leveling of land
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
The students learn the basic load which
the beams, columns and arches can
safely bear without failing is important.
Hence tests are conducted to check
deflection in beams, buckling in
columns if the load exerted on
structural member exceeds safe limit or
not.
MECHANICS OF SOLIDS LAB
Department of civil engineering boasts
of a well established mechanics of
solids lab with state-of-the-art
equipments and latest techniques for
analysis. It gives students a chance to
apply textbook principles and theory.
Students perform experiments which
yield the type of data which form the
basis of established mechanical
properties. By doing this students both
confirm the theory and realize some of
the limits of its application. Latest
machines like Computerized Universal
Testing Machine, Concrete Testing
Machine etc help the students to
perform experiments with accuracy and
can study the behavior of materials
exactly.
FLUID MECHANICS
At completion of this course, students
should have the knowledge of absolute,
differential, and gauge pressure, Basic
pressure measurement, Elementary
flow visualization tools, to deduce fluid
physics information from flow
visualizations, Basic fluid velocity
measurement techniques. The state-of-
the-art wind tunnel apparatus at fluid
mechanics lab helps the students to
study the boundary later velocity
profiles and to determine boundary
layer and displacement thickness.
The students have the freedom and
opportunity to design their
own experiments and establish the
relationships like the exponent in the
power law of velocity distribution using
the wind tunnel apparatus.
ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
The laboratory introduces the students
to some basic geologic principles,
starting off with basic identification of
geologic materials, map use and
deformation of rock analogs. The
students are taken outdoors to explore
geologic and geophysical mapping
techniques; and illustrate
environmental, geologic and
engineering topics through visits to
local field sites.
BUILDING MATERIALS AND
CONSTRUCTION
The building materials like cement,
concrete reinforcement, bricks, mortars
and steel etc are being tested in this lab.
Construction and building materials
provides essential information about
the materials that help effectively to
link theory with practical knowledge
and application. Laboratory helps to
analyze data using experiments and to
have exposure to different equipments
and machines.
CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY
The concrete laboratory provides
extensive practical knowledge to
students so as to make them confident
in the preparation and testing of
concrete like slump test, compaction
test, and compressive strength at
different ages and to cast slabs, beams
etc.. The lab is well equipped and
would make students familiar with the
nature and properties of concrete by
conducting laboratory tests.
TRANSPORTATION
ENGINEERING
The lab is designed in such a way that
the student does an in-depth analysis of
aggregate, bitumen and bitumen mixes.
The testing of various qualities of
aggregates like crushing strength
,impact strength and specific gravity
and that of bitumen like softening , fire
and flash point, viscosity, moisture
content are carried out.
ENVIRONMENTAL
ENGINEERING LAB:
This lab is well equipped with all the
facilities for Water and waste water
testing for physico-chemical and
biological parameters by using
equipments like BOD incubators, pH
Meters, Turbidity meters, jar test
Apparatus. The primary objective of
this lab is to demonstrate environmental
engineering testing procedures, to
understand how to interpret the data,
and how the information can be applied
in environmental engineering practice.
This lab is continuously upgraded with
the latest environmental equipment like
BOD incubator, Hot air oven, digital
physical balance; Spectrophotometer.
Students contribute through water
testing procedures to build a pollution
database of the nearby rivers and
sewage treatment plant.
GEOTECH ENGINEERING LAB
This Laboratory has the well equipped
machines and equipments to conduct
various experiments for students to
satisfy the academic curriculum. The
laboratory is also being used for
consultancy works of private and
government bodies to test the soil
samples obtained from the field, so as
to identify and classify the soils, assess
the strength and compressibility
characteristics of the soil, estimate the
safe bearing capacity and settlement of
soil in the field. The laboratory is also
equipped to assess suitability of soil for
usage as a construction material in
embankments and dams. This
laboratory involves testing of soil for
its various properties like permeability,
grain size analysis, shear strength,
compressive strength, moisture content,
specific gravity.
.
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN LAB
Students learn to use the CAD (computer aided drafting) software and its utilities in the
engineering software. Study of the various toolbar options and exercises to familiarize all
the drawing tools is being conducted in this lab. They study the basic initial setting and
viewing of the drafting software interfaces, use of basic entities in 2D, uses of various
modify commands of the drafting software. In this lab students are being trained on
various other Civil Engineering Software’s also.
TRAINING AND FIELD VISITS
Specially designed training programs for the students such as on non-destructive testing
of concrete, total station are the regular part of the academics. To keep students abreast
with latest tools and techniques the department keeps on organizing training programs in
latest happening in Civil Engineering. Field visits are also being conducted on regular
basis.
CIVENG CLUB:
The Club established by the Civil Engineering students organizes number of extra-
curricular activities like workshops for students, civil quests, inter and intra-university
technical events and also provides guidance to fresher and students who are new to the
university. It provides an opportunity to the students think freely and build on their
technical skills by working on application based projects. The faculty extends their whole
hearted guidance and support to the students in maintaining and running the club.
