About FDP
The department of Civil Engineering organized Faculty Development Program (FDP) “Jnana-2017”
from 24th January 2017 to 26th January 2017 at Seminar Hall, Krishna Chethana new Building. The
objective of this program was to focus few advanced topics in the area of Structural Engineering,
Geotechnical Engineering and Surveying. Since there is a change in subjects or few topics in fourth
semester, this FDP was designed in such a way that to cover advanced concepts in CBCS curriculum.
The FDP was organized for three days and it included technical lectures, demonstrations and filed visits.
This three day faculty development program was meticulously designed for the professionals working as
academic faculty members and Research scholars. The single aim of FDP was to Update the Knowledge
of faculty to Perform better.

delegates to learn innovative things and requested
delegates to give practical examples to the students while
teaching. Shri Satheesh Rao P, President VCET presided
over the function. Mr Satheesh Rao said that the function
was well organized and appreciated the team work of
Civil department. He urged the faculty of Civil
Engineering department to organize more community related
activities like creating awareness on water management,
climate changes, environment, etc. He appreciated Civil
Engineering department for their committed efforts in
organizing “Jnana-2017” in an effective way. Dr. M S
Govinde Gowda, Principal, VCET Puttur was present. Dr
Sandeep J Nayak, HOD, Department of Civil Engineering
gave a warm welcome to the dignitaries and also to the
participants. The Coordinator Prof Jayakrishna Bhat D,
proposed vote of thanks to the gathering.
Technical Lecture: Structural Engineering
The technical session was started by Dr. B.G Naresh Kumar, the Principal, MIT Mysore in the area of
Structural Engineering. He gave lectures on Deflection, Strain energy method, Influence line diagram
News Letter Special feature of FDP

and Research areas in structural Engineering. The detailed
explanation was given for basics of structural analysis,
analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate
structures, different methods used for deflection(i.e.
Moment area Method, Conjugate Beam method and Double
Integration method) including their advantages and
disadvantages, Virtual displacement method of analysis and
methods to draw Influence line diagram.
Technical Lecture: Geotechnical Engineering
The second session was handled by Dr. Ramakrishne Gowda, HOD and Professor, MIT Mysore, in the
area of Geotechnical Engineering. He gave information on
Compaction, Consolidation, and Research Areas in
Geotechnical Engineering. Dr Gowda explained basic
knowledge of soil mechanics which includes Introduction
to soil, origin of soil and three phase structure of soil mass.
During his talk participants have taken required basic
knowledge of geotechnical engineering and also he
explained some practical problems of soil during the
construction of foundation and design of pavement. He
shared his ideas to create curiosity among the students
about the subject. He explained basics of geotechnical engineering with respect to CBCS syllabus in an
effective way.
Technical Lecture and Demonstration: Advanced Surveying
The third session was handled by Dr. Pruthviraj U Assistant
Professor, NITK, Surathkal on 25th January 2017 Initially he
gave demonstration on Aerial Photography by using DJI
phantom 4, DJI Inspire RAW, DJI Matrice 600 instruments.
Aerial photography helps to capture live images of Forest
areas, Agricultural Land, Builtup areas, water bodies,
Encroached lands, Waste disposal site etc. After
demonstration he
gave technical lecture
to analyze the captured images by using different softwares. He
also shared his field knowledge by explaining funded
government projects. Dr. Pruthviraj also explained about the
generation of 3D images by using aerial photographs. He
demonstrated the working principle of thermal sensor and its
applications. Broad area for the curriculum project including
merits and demerits were explained to the delegates.
Demonstration of Surveying Instruments
The fourth session on 25th January 2017, afternoon was handled by C Balakrishnan, Field and
Applications engineer, Indus Instruments, Chennai and authorized dealer of Leica Instruments. He gave
3 Department of Civil Engineering
field demonstration of modern Surveying Instruments like
Total station, electronic distance measurement, hand held
GPS device etc. During demonstration, the operation of
Leica Total Station was explained. The various application
like taking field data, to find areas of particular location,
building centerline marking, Gradient check etc also been
demonstrated. Mr. Balakrishnana also gave demonstration
on handheld GPS device to find Geographic coordinates,
Area and distance between two points.
Valedictory Function of Jnana-2017
The Valedictory function of Jnana-2017 was held on 25th
January 2017 at 4:45pm. Mr Ashwin Sequeria, Center Head
CADD Centre, Puttur and C Balakrishan, Field and
Applications engineer, Indus Instruments Chennai were the
guests for the function. Dr. M S Govinde Gowda, Principal,
Prof Vivek Ranjan Bhandary, Campus Director, Dr. Sandeep
J Nayak, HOD were present and distributed the certificates.
Prof Sudeep M,
Assistant Prfessor,
Dept of Civil Engineering gave welcome to the gathering.
Coordinator Mr Rakesh Borker B S read report of Jnana 2017.
The Pricipal, Dr. M. S. Govinde Gowda, in his concluding
remarks appreciated the concerted efforts of Civil Engineering
department and urged to use the knowledge gained in FDP to
perform better. The Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof.
Prashatha Acharya, from the host department.
Field Visit
The final day of FDP was focussed totally for Field
Visit. The Participants visited Master Planery, Puttur
to get knowledge on alternate building materials. The
main product from industry was CONCOOD. The
Engineers at the site explained the entire
manufacturing process followed in preparation of
CONCOOD. They also gave overview of Precast
products, Low cost housing, Tiled roof, Furnitures,
Shelf, Wardrobes, Doors and Windows etc. The Field
visit was totally interesting and Informative.
Participants
Total 43 participants have registered for this
program. Out of which 16 External faculty members
from different engineering institutions, 4 PG
students and 23 internal faculty members. This FDP
Jnana-2017 gave strong base to faculty members to
teach advanced topics in different areas of Civil
Engineering and also enhanced their confidence to
Perform better.

Inauguration of “Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery Laboratory”
The new Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machines laboratory in “Krishna Chethana” building was
inaugurated by Dr. B. G. Naresh Kumar, Principal, MIT, Mysore on January 24th 2017 at 9:25 am. The
purpose of the laboratory is to reinforce and enhance understanding of the fundamentals of fluid
mechanics and working principles of hydraulic machines. The experiments in this Laboratory are
conducted to demonstrate the applications using hydraulics principles and to provide a more spontaneous
and understanding of the hydraulic machines subject. In this regard, few open ended experiments will
also be taught to the students.
