A WELCOME NOTE FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Prof. G Mohan
Head of Earth Sciences Department
On behalf of the Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Bombay, I extend a very warm welcome
to all the new entrants to the Department. It is indeed a matter of great pride and privilege for
you to be a part of the Earth Science fraternity at IIT Bombay. The transition from the
university to the IIT system is a challenging and daunting task, and you will need to adapt
quickly to the new system. In this regard, I encourage students to interact with their faculty
advisors or any other faculty regarding any issues related to academics or otherwise. The
departmental faculty are approachable, helpful and ever willing to provide guidance. You
will find the atmosphere in the department to be student friendly and conducive to achieving
excellence in academics. This is a great opportunity for all of you to take advantage of the
excellent teaching and research facilities in the department to enhance your career. IIT
Bombay also provides ample opportunity to students to hone their skills in extra-curricular
activities and shape their overall personality. I am certain that your stay at IITB will be
memorable and cherished by one and all.
With Best Wishes! Prof. G Mohan

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Earth Science was constituted in 1982 from the erstwhile Geology section
which was initiated in 1958 in the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay and was
offering M.Sc. programme in Applied Geology since 1964. The department has since
witnessed a steady growth over time in terms of faculty strength, research areas and facilities
and academic programmes. Currently the department has faculty strength of 20 and offers
• M.Sc (Applied Geology) and M.Sc.(Applied Geophysics) as UG programmes
• M.Tech (Geoexploration) and M.Tech (Petroleum Geosciences) as PG programmes
• Doctoral Programmes
The department annually admits about 50 students in its M.Sc. programmes,
about 37 students in its M.Tech Programmes and about 20 students in its Doctoral
programme. The core and elective courses in the various programmes on offer are
specifically designed to meet industry standards and research requirements.
The department is well equipped with the state-of-art laboratory and research facilities
including two major national facilities - the 40Ar/39Ar mass spectrometer for geochronology
and the EPMA for mineral chemistry. Several sophisticated geophysical equipment were also
procured to support the teaching and research programmes in geophysics. The department
enjoys substantial financial support from various government agencies and national research
laboratories through sponsored research and consultation. The faculty regularly publish their
research in peer-reviewed high impact SCI journals of international repute. These research
contributions are duly recognized at the national as well as international level in terms of
several national awards such as the Bhatnagar prize, National Geoscience award, Young
Scientist award, Krishnan medal and several other national and international research awards
and fellowships. The faculty of the department have also been serving the public sector
undertakings and national institutions as board of directors and governors and in advisory
committees and some are serving the editorial boards of journals. The close links that the
department enjoys with the industry and research organizations has worked towards elevating
the level and quality of studies and facilities. The department also works towards building the
social and moral character of the students.

ISCP (Institute Student Companion Programme)
There is an abrupt change in student life from universities to IITs. Student from various
colleges and universities often face the problem of proper guidance especially during their
initial days at IIT. To bridge the life style gap between colleges and IIT Bombay, ISCP was
started.
The Student Companion Programme is specifically designed to cater to the needs of PG
community of IIT Bombay. The post graduate students in the institute face various issues
which are typically non-academic and coalition of academic in nature. These issues need to
be addressed; the ISCP provides a platform for the students to get help at formal as well as
informal lines. The current scenario, thus, calls for a Post Graduate student-oriented guidance
program which addresses their peculiar needs and helps them in becoming sound scientists,
engineers and citizens. The ISCP is in effect from the academic year 2011-2012, and is
monitored by the Dean AP office. Students are requested to make best use of the resources
made available to them by the ISCP.

A WELCOME NOTE from Department Coordinator (M.Sc), ISCP
Hello friends!
At First, congratulations to all the freshers for qualifying national level exam and becoming
part of the prestigious IIT Bombay. I whole heartedly welcome you to the Earth Sciences
Family. During your initial days, you may find the atmosphere a bit engulfed with tension.
Since the IIT way of teaching and its academic schedule is different from those of
universities, you may also need some time to adapt to it. Humans are the most versatile
creature and I am sure you will get accustomed to it in a jiffy. Please feel free to approach
any seniors, faculty members whenever you feel so. The faculty over here are the best in
themselves, friendly and selflessly ever ready to help. You can talk to the faculty advisors or
any faculty member not only regarding your academics but also if you feel uneasy in this
new place. We also have student counsellor who will soothe your mind in case you are
mentally unadaptable to the new scenarios. Please don’t get your head stuck in books only,
be active participant in extracurricular activities. I advise you to be in constant contact with
your student companions and report him about your any problems. I am also there to
extend my helping hands whenever you need. I beseech you to enjoy every moment at IIT
Bombay because you are going to miss this place forever. I assure you that these two years
of your life would be the best.

PROTOLITH
Protolith is the first national level festival of IITB Department of Earth Sciences. It takes place in
the month of October. Coming from the amalgamation of two Greek words – ‘protos’ for first
and ‘lithos’ which means rock, protolith means the original rock from which the current existing
rock was created. It signifies a beginning, the dawn of something new and exciting. It signifies
the start of something wonderful that will be remembered for days to come.
And it is with this belief that we, the students of IIT Bombay, are proud to be bringing you the
first national level festival of the IITB Earth Sciences Department, Protolith. The field of geology
is rarely known outside the circles of those who deal with the mysteries of the Earth. Protolith is
aimed at bringing this science to the fore and motivating the youth of our country to embark
upon careers in it. However, it is not just a means to increase the awareness about the
geosciences. It is also an opportunity for the current students to showcase their skill and talent
in various competitions and challenging tasks. This festival is also intended to bridge the gap
between the industry and the academics by increasing the interaction between them. Most
importantly though, Protolith is envisioned to provide a platform for young minds to mingle and
come up with ideas that we believe can revolutionize this amazing branch of study. It symbolizes
our hope that there is no barrier between disciplines of this field and our hope that together we
can be stronger and better than what we are alone.
For more details check official website of Protolith www.protolith-iitb.com or
