Before the Opening ceremony the Vice-Chancellor met with Rolls-Royce representatives namely, Mr Paul Stein,Dr Sam Beale and Dr Frank Haselbach; members of the Osney Thermofluids Research Laboratory team;Professor Peter Ireland (who was announced as the new Donald Schultz Professor of Turbomachinery);
Professor Martin Oldfield, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Professor Guy Houlsby.

Over 180 guests attended the Southwell Building Opening. These included representatives from government, industry,
academia, alumni and current and former staff from the Department of Engineering Science.
