On behalf of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) Ophthalmology Alumni Association, we are pleased to welcome you to our annual Alumni Day . This year’s program will be high-lighted by the presentation of the 38th annual John Milton McLean Award to Richard D. Lisman, MD.
Alumni Day is a reminder of our department’s continued tradition of training future ophthalmologists and vision researchers and the importance of keeping these alumni connected to the Department and to each other. Alumni consists of all current and previous WCMC Department of Ophthalmology faculty and graduates of the residency and fellowship (research and clinical) programs. All alumni are encouraged to remain involved.
The Alumni Association’s mission is to support the Department’s commitment to teaching, research, clinical care, and public service. The steering committee consists of both current faculty and previous graduates of the program who continue to be actively involved with resident and fellow education. Throughout the year, all interested alumni are notified by email of the grand rounds schedule, special lectures, annual alumni events, fellow and resident graduation invitations, and departmental updates.

Richard D. Lisman, MD, FACS is Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine and the NYU/Langone Medical Center. He is also Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery at the NYU/Langone Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery as well as the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital/Lenox Hill Hospital. He is the Preceptor of the New York Combined Fellowship program in Ophthalmic Plas-tic Surgery which is a two-year program of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; he has trained Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons for the ASOPRS for 37 years. He was the ASOPRS Chairman of Ethics and Standards 2010-2016. A Graduate of the New York University School of Medicine and its Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program; Dr. Lisman completed Ophthalmology Residency and Chief Residency at Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital. His ASOPRS Fellowship was completed under Byron Smith in 1980-82. Dr. Lisman has co-authored four texts in his specialty of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery; over 150 peer-reviewed publica-
tions and book chapters. He has served on the Board of Surgeon Directors of Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital;
Trustee of the Lenox Hill Hospital and Southampton Hospital. He has delivered the Byron Smith lectureship at the
Clinical Barraquer in Bogota Columbia, the Jakobiec lectureship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital; William
Beaumont Hospital Lectureship as well as The Walsh Lectureship at Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He is the
recipient of the AAO Honor and Senior Honor Awards and the New York Academy of Medicine Senior Honor Award.
His leadership of Medical Societies has included Past President of the NY Society for Clinical Ophthalmology, Past
President of the New York Academy of Medicine Section of Ophthalmology, Past President of the New York
Ophthalmologic Society; He continues to serve as the President of the Orbital Disease and Education Foundation and
the Glover Fund for Research and Education in Ophthalmology. He is a founding member and Director of the New
York Orbit Society, and member of The Board of Trustees of the Manhattan Ophthalmologic Associates Foundation.
Dr. Lisman has been Section Editor and Guest editor of the Journal of OPRS, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the Journal
PRS. More importantly to him, outside of his profession, he has been the 1st Place top American finisher three times
in the Italian Mille Miglia, a long distance Vintage Race Event of 450 Starters and Factory team cars as well as a
3rd place at the Monte Carlo Historics.

Past McLean Medal Recipients
John Milton McLean, MD
John Milton McLean was Professor and Chairman of the Division of
Ophthalmology at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical
College from 1939 to 1968. He initiated the residency training
program at The New York Hospital with a combined full time and
voluntary staff.
Among notable departmental achievements during this period were
the establishment of the first Eye Bank (later moved to Manhattan
Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital), the introduction of steroids in the
treatment of ophthalmic disease as well as cryoprexy and numerous
other innovations in the treatment of retinal disease.
Dr. McLean was universally recognized as one of the leading educators
of his era. The John Milton McLean Chair for the Department of
Ophthalmology was established in 1979 and grateful patients and
alumni established the McLean Medal in 1981. It is awarded annually
by the alumni to an ophthalmologist who has made significant
contributions in teaching, research and clinical practice.
