Mission StatementMission Statement

To carry out research of world class in an internationalcontext and, wherever possible, to use it to maximumadvantage for Scotland and the United Kingdom as awhole.

To provide training of the highest calibre in physicsand astronomy to students who wish to specialise inthese subjects and to those for whom some knowledgewill help their progress in other disciplines.

Postgraduate training in Postgraduate training in Physics & AstronomyPhysics & Astronomy

The Graduate SchoolPostgraduate teaching is organisedthrough the P&A Graduate SchoolHead : Prof. Jim Hough

Postgraduate Training• Induction course• Specialist lectures• Annual written reports for Graduate School culminating in thesis• Presentations in 1st and 3rd year • Teaching experience in laboratories, tutorials and in skills course• Generic skills mastered in course of research

Degrees & Funding•Typically 20+ students per annum study for Ph.D. degrees (1 or 2 for M.Sc. by research)• 2/3 funded by Research Councils• Of these 1/3 have additional industrial sponsorship (CASE etc)• Remainder funded by industry, University or from overseas• Ph. D. funding is for 3 years

EmployabilityP&A PG students find employment readily for a wide range of industrial and educational employers

Research Strategy (I)Research Strategy (I)

A key part of our strategy is for research groups (either singly ortogether) to be sufficiently flexible to respond rapidly to newinitiatives to extend personnel or equipment bases.

Page 8: Department of Physics Astronomy. Mission Statement

Research Strategy (II)Research Strategy (II)

To be effective, each research group must maintain a critical mass interms of academic and support staff. This should be sufficient toallow: groups to maintain a commanding presence within their own sub-

disciplines, groups to participate in multi-disciplinary projects, specialist teaching at undergraduate level to be delivered.
