In 2015-16, CSUSB celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Department of Theatre Arts offered its first production in the fall our second year and we have been part of the San Bernardino artistic scene ever since. So . . . Welcome to our 50th year of producing plays!

This year, we bring an eclectic array of shows to the stage that will appeal to any artistic taste. We begin with a staged reading of Chloe Diaz’s (a senior and Barnes Scholar) first full-length play, “Mujer Fuerte.” Set in 1944, we follow the journey of a young Mexican American woman struggling to find her way in an often hostile cultural environment.

Our first offering on the main stage is Johanna Smith’s innovative production of “Alicia in Wonder Tierra.” Variety said that this exploration of Mexican heritage using puppets and live actors “shows great inventiveness in devising characters . . . as fanciful and flamboyant as those in the Lewis Carroll classic.” Alicia performs in the Barnes Theatre and then moves to our Palm Desert Campus.

In winter, we travel to the poetic landscape of Bertolt Brecht with his classic, “Mother Courage and Her Children.” This ironic musical, directed by Tom Provenzano, highlights the devastating effects of war on not just soldiers but the civilians who must feed off the scraps armies leave behind. While the themes are dark, the show is dynamic and a live rock band supports the evening.

In spring, the Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase presents the Kander and Ebb’s musical review, “The World Goes ‘Round.” Kathryn Ervin brings her deft touch in staging songs from such great shows as New York, New York, Cabaret, and Chicago to name a few.

Our theme this year is “journeys:” from home, through the looking glass, off to war, and around the Broadway musical world. We look forward to you joining us in this, our 50th season of “playing.”

“Mother Courage,” by German dramatist and poet Bertolt Brecht, opens March 10. Directed by Tom Provenzano, “Mother Courage” follows the life of camp follower, Anna Fierling and her three children, as they roam a war-torn country in a wagon that acts as both a shop and their home. Anna’s efforts to support her family in the face of relentless war highlights the collateral damage of “non-combatants” in a story as old as Herakles and as new as yesterday’s front page.

When Alicia enters a Mexican curio shop with her mother, she accidentally finds herself transported into fantastic realms, filled with amazing creatures and brilliant Mexican imagery. Steeped in Latin American cultural icons, Alicia begins to learn the difference between tradition and stereotype as she attempts to find her way back home to her family. This unique, family friendly production features actors and puppets performing side-by-side in a space that reveals new wonders as each scene evolves.

The Student New Play Showcase featuring “Mujer Fuerte” produced by Carol Damgen, written by Chloe Diaz, and directed by one of our senior students. It’s 1944 in Southern California and while Americans on the home front work to support the war effort, Grace, a young Mexican American woman, struggles to find her own voice in spite of racial and cultural obstacles of the times. This script reading allows the patrons the opportunity to give feedback to this talented, bourjoning script writer.

Theatre at CSUSBDoes theatre interest you? The Theatre Arts major is both an exciting artistic adventure and a practical liberal arts degree. The broad range of subjects studied enable the theatre major to qualify for a wide variety of fields in California’s vast network that is the entertainment industry. Live theatre, design, film, television, corporate and media training, radio, public relations, advertising, business, law, and education are all avenues pursued by CSUSB graduates. The diverse nature of theatre training develops skills for working as a theatre artist, as well as exploring human interaction and awareness of the human condition.

Work in Your Area of InterestIn addition to acting on stage, theatre students are encouraged to work with faculty as assistant directors, designers, stage managers, and in theatre administration. Theatre faculty encourage highly motivated and qualified students to develop their own creative efforts.

Ellen Gaynor Weisser graduated from CSUSB with a B.A. degree in English in 1968. She is the former chair of the College of Arts and Letters Community Leaders Board (2004-2015) and the current chair of the CSUSB Philanthropic Foundation. Ellen appeared as Shakespeare’s Desdemona during the CSUSB 1967-1968 season in a production of short plays titled “Matches and Mismatches.” Her vivaciousness and enthusiam for her alma mater are truly inspirational.

Ellen’s husband, Stanley “Stan” Weisser, earned his R.Ph. from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in 1963. Currently, he is a trustee of the University of Redlands. Stan is brilliant, warm, and

dedicated to serving his fellow man.

Ellen and Stan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016, an amazing milestone in the lives of this wonderful couple.

On June 4, 2016, Stan surprised Ellen with a special gift honoring her service to CSUSB, the university’s 50th anniversary, and most importantly, their golden wedding anniversary. The Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase supports a CSUSB Department of Theatre Arts production each year. The inagural Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase production, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” filled the theatre to capacity at every performance. This year, the Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase presents “The World Goes ‘Round,” a delightful musical review celebrating the careers of two of the world’s most celebrated musical icons, John Kander and Fred Ebb.

On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of the CSUSB Department of Theatre Arts, thank you Stan and Ellen for creating this wonderful endowment!

Kennedy Center American College Theatre FestivalPart of the Rubenstein Arts Access Program is generously funded by David and Alice Rubenstein. Additional support is provided by the U.S. Department of Education, the Dr. Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation, The Honorable Stuart Bernstein and Wilma E. Bernstein, and the National Committee for the Performing Arts. This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). The aim of this national theatre education program is to identify and promote quality in college-level theatre productions. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions

entered on the participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2013. Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theatre department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theatre across the nation.
