Rock Riverside Alliance celebrated the groundbreaking of the Riverside Apartments on November 14 at 238 Ontario Street. “This will be an economic catalyst for this area,” said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. “These apartments will support area businesses, strengthen the fabric of community in Riverside and be a springboard for new investment.” The $20 million project will be funded by a combination of $1.5 million in city HOME funds, along with state and private funding. Over 350 construction jobs will be created, and later 40 permanent jobs will be added to the community. The Riverside Apartments are scheduled for completion in January 2014. Mix yeast, fl our and water with memories, pour them into a pan and bake. The resulting fresh baked loaves of bread warmed Woodcrest Commons residents’ hearts and bellies during a visit from Rochester’s “bread man” Chet Fery in early-January. Fery shared recipes and “Bread Time Stories,” memories of baking and giving away more than 10,000 loaves of bread in his lifetime. Pictured to the right, Brockport’s Chet Fery kneads bread while Woodcrest Commons residents Doug Kurlan and Josephine Townley observe.

When Fery isn’t baking and handing out loaves to people at the Rochester Public Market, he’s giving community presentations on the benefi ts of random acts of kindness. During Fery’s visit, residents reminisced, with one recalling how her mother would wake every morning at

Pictured above with Fery and one of his loaves is Woodcrest Commons resident Joanne Hackett.
