2 Coleman entrepreneurship Center

From the Deanentrepreneurship plays a key role in business success in the 21st century, and it has an important place in the Driehaus College of Business. Depaul was one of the first universities in the nation to integrate entrepreneurship into

our academic curriculum in 1982, under the direction of Harold Welsch, management professor and Coleman Chair in entrepreneurship. A major endowment grant from the Coleman Foundation in 2003 enabled us to establish the Coleman entrepreneurship Center, adding another dimension to our program. over the years, these two elements—the classroom instruction by our talented faculty, and the hands-on, experiential learning from the programs and events of the Center—have inspired thousands of Depaul students to launch and grow new businesses.

Depaul’s entrepreneurship program has long been recognized as a national leader. those honors continue with the recent release of the princeton Review’s “top 25 entrepreneurship programs 2015” guide, which ranks our undergraduate program at no. 15 and our graduate program at no. 20 among more than 2,000 programs in the united States. In 2015 we will be expanding our efforts to support entrepreneurship through an international collaboration and other business developments.

the knowledge, creativity and dedication demonstrated in these pages reflect the bright future we see for Depaul students as they develop into entrepreneurial leaders who will contribute to our university, our community and our world.

From the exeCutive DireCtorIt has been an exciting year at the Coleman entrepreneurship Center, as we built upon our strong foundation and expanded our reach and impact. In these pages, you will see the many ways that the Center touches members of the

Depaul family as well as the broader Chicago business community.

the Center is the hub for entrepreneurship at Depaul. We partner with Depaul’s academic entrepreneurship program, and focus on three key activities to help undergraduate and graduate students and recent alumni launch new ventures. We advise students via individual and group sessions, as well as match them with established entrepreneurs who serve as mentors. our numerous guest speakers —including many successful Depaul entrepreneurial alumni—inspire our students with their stories and insights about transforming ideas into viable companies. We also connect various populations: students seeking partners from across the university; Chicago-area startups looking for Depaul interns or new employees; and alumni reaching out for information, colleagues or other resources for their ventures.

our success springs from the active contributions of many partners. We invite you to review our accomplishments of the last year and consider ways you may want to get involved in the future. We welcome you to join us in our efforts to guide the next generation of entrepreneurs at Depaul university.

eventsAt the Coleman entrepreneurship Center, we believe that entrepreneurs learn best from other entrepreneurs.

that is why, over the course of the 2013-14 academic year, the Center

hosted and participated in dozens of events that connected Depaul students and

alumni with entrepreneurs and other members of the greater Chicago business community. through forums, seminars, workshops and other events, our students obtained a first-hand look at the experience of starting a successful business—the aspirations, the challenges and the triumphs.

“uncommon Questions”: a Showcase of Crain’s 40 under 40 Business LeadersFor each of the past 25 years, Crain’s Chicago Business has recognized 40 Chicago business leaders who have made outstanding contributions to their fields before the age of 40. this year, the Coleman entrepreneurship Center partnered with Crain’s to celebrate the achievements of the new class of honorees and to welcome many of them into the Depaul entrepreneurial community.

In 2013-14 the Coleman Center hosted six showcase discussions of Crain’s 40 under 40 leaders, in partnership with the Chicago Family Business Council. Crain’s honorees shared personal experiences on starting and managing successful companies. We thank all of the panelists and moderators from Depaul’s “uncommon Questions” Crain’s 40 under 40 showcase series for giving us their unique insights and perspectives to help aspiring entrepreneurs.

Student Competitions and Awardsto inspire hands-on venture creation and promote competition, the Coleman entrepreneurship Center held two venture challenges during the

2013-14 academic year. each competition encouraged students to express their

creative ideas in ways that could lead to a successful enterprise, and deepen their thinking, planning and presentation skills. Members of the Chicago entrepreneurial community generously gave their time to serve as student advisors and judges.

4th annual Student innovation awards In February 2014 the Coleman entrepreneurship Center, in partnership with Depaul university’s Center for Creativity and Innovation, awarded scholarships to seven students whose cutting-edge ideas put them at the forefront of innovation at Depaul. each year, the competition salutes students’ creativity, originality, problem-solving abilities and opportunity recognition skills.

out of 65 nominations from undergraduate and graduate students across the university, the 4th Annual Student Innovation Awards recognized first-prize winner Kevin Yu (Blulite), second-prize winner Ian Stellmach (Jam City) and third-prize winner Anthony Iavarone (Giglift.com) for their outstanding entrepreneurial achievements, awarding them scholarships of $1,000, $750, and $500, respectively. Honorable mentions of $500 scholarships were awarded to Gloria Martinez (Martínez escuela de lengua y Cultura), Khoa nguyen (YourResponse), and Haley nozell Van lahr and Amir Montazery (tXtR).

We thank the numerous individuals who volunteered as our online judges and coaches for this competition. In addition, we thank lisa Gundry, Director of Depaul’s Center for Innovation and Creativity, our partner on this event. We also extend special appreciation to our Coleman entrepreneurship Center Advisory Board for sponsoring our scholarships.

Depaul university has a distinctive connection to the global city of Chicago,

and the city provides both a backdrop and content for our students’ learning. the

Coleman entrepreneurship Center’s outreach programs connect students to the world of business and deepen our relationships with the Chicago business community.

high School Pitch CompetitionIn December 2013 the Center hosted 38 students from Rolling Meadows and prospect High Schools, in District 214, for a Business pitch Competition. Sixteen student teams gave 5-minute presentations on their business ideas, competing for certificates of achievement. our panel of judges included: entrepreneur R.J. pahura, Depaul alumni entrepreneurs Kyle Joseph and Rania el-Sorrogy, and Depaul Assistant professor of Communication Matt Ragas. paul Hennig, entrepreneurship teacher at prospect High School, served as project liaison. Students also heard about the college application process from Depaul Admission Counselor Will Manzo and about the many activities of the Coleman entrepreneurship Center.

Startup internship Programthanks to a grant from the John e. and Jeanne t. Hughes Foundation, the Coleman entrepreneurship Center launched a pilot program to sponsor three Depaul undergraduate student internships with Chicago startups. three qualified students were selected from a pool of student applicants. they reviewed applications from entrepreneurial startups to determine where they would work for 125 hours over the course of summer 2014.

Senior science and health major John orrico interned at proofX, a company focused on implementing 3D printing technology into healthcare. His role in the company consisted of designing a research survey to assess the progress that medical and research institutions in Chicago have made toward implementing 3D printing technology in their facilities.

Another Depaul senior, Ian Stellmach, a management/entrepreneurship major with a minor in computer science, worked as a design intern and project manager for Spare to Share, an online private sharing network within residential buildings. Ian created a new layout and potential new features for the site, as well as helped refine the overall online user experience.

Depaul’s Academic entrepreneurship program

With 30 million entrepreneurs in the United States and a half million new startups each year, entrepreneurship is a vital part of the United States economy. At DePaul, we recognize this powerful market force and have integrated entrepreneurship into our curriculum for nearly 30 years. Over that time, thousands of DePaul students have participated in our academic entrepreneurship program, graduating to start their own successful companies, work at entrepreneurial firms, or choose a path of self-employment.

DePaul’s leadership in entrepreneurship education is built upon many strong foundational elements. Our entrepreneurship faculty have direct entrepreneurial experience—either as past or current founders and participants in business ventures—and they share their knowledge in a broad spectrum of classes that mix theory and practice. They are joined by faculty from across the university who serve as Coleman Fellows and bring their enthusiasm for entrepreneurship to their respective disciplines. Our faculty also are active entrepreneurship researchers, and authors of books and articles that contribute to the field. The experiential programs and events of the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center complement these academic activities—all adding up to provide a multidimensional educational experience for our students.

Harold Welsch, PhD Founder and Coleman Chair in Entrepreneurship Professor of Management

one unique aspect of Depaul university’s entrepreneurship program is its truly exceptional faculty. At Depaul, we take pride in the fact that our entrepreneurship faculty members are seasoned, successful entrepreneurs. each professor brings to the classroom a wealth of experience in creating and running successful businesses, giving students the knowledge they need to succeed in the entrepreneurial world. We salute our outstanding faculty for their contributions to the Coleman entrepreneurship Center this year.

our new Startup labAs we look to the future of entrepreneurship at Depaul, we are pleased to announce a fundraising effort to support the creation of a highly visible suite of offices and open workspaces on the seventh floor of the Depaul Center on our loop Campus. located in the heart of downtown Chicago, this 4,038-sq.ft. space

will serve as a physical hub of entrepreneurial activity for the university. It will bring together co-working space, Center administrative offices, advisors, mentors, and

training to support student entrepreneurs, recent alumni, faculty and staff.

With its moveable worktables and chairs, the Startup lab is easily transformed into an event space for lectures and presentations open to the university and guests from the broader Chicago business community.

An 18-person training room (above) will offer private space for educational programs. the suite also includes two offices for entrepreneurs-in-residence, a 10-person conference room, a small private advising room, a common reception area (shown above left) and the Center’s administrative offices.

the central area of the entrepreneurship suite will be the Startup lab, a flexibly furnished large hall with dual functionality. As configured above, the space is a working/meeting space for student teams that have demonstrated their commitment to launching a new venture. (the alternative configuration is shown below right.)
