What is an independent clause?

Independent Clause - An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. Here is an example: We walk to school. This sentence expresses a complete thought and can stand alone.

Let’s put the two together.• Dependent Clause = when dad is not

home• Independent Clause = We walk to

school.

• When dad is not home, we walk to school. Or

• We walk to school when dad is not home.

How to do it?Use a comma to separate the dependent (subordinate) clause from the main clause (independent) when the subordinate clause comes first.Example:Before everyone else awoke Charles got up to finish last night’s homework.Before everyone else awoke, Charles got up to finish last night’s homework.
