Dependent Clause - A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence. Here is an example: when dad is not homeThis clause does not express a complete thought and cannot stand alone.
What is an independent clause?
Independent Clause - An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. Here is an example: We walk to school. This sentence expresses a complete thought and can stand alone.
Let’s put the two together.• Dependent Clause = when dad is not
home• Independent Clause = We walk to
school.
• When dad is not home, we walk to school. Or
• We walk to school when dad is not home.
How to do it?Use a comma to separate the dependent (subordinate) clause from the main clause (independent) when the subordinate clause comes first.Example:Before everyone else awoke Charles got up to finish last night’s homework. Before everyone else awoke, Charles got up to finish last night’s homework.
What is a fragment? A sentence fragment is a group of words that is only part of a sentence and does not express a complete thought. Usually sentence fragments are pieces of sentences that have become disconnected from the main clauses.
