Keep it steady.Whenkayaking,keepaslow,steadypaddlingrhythm.You’remorelikelytohavecuriousseals,otters,ordolphinsapproachyou.

Zoom In.Usebinoculars,spottingscopes,andzoomcameralensestoseewildlifeaction‘upcloseatadistance’thatislesslikelytodisturbnaturalanimal behaviors.

Look and listen for signs of wildlife.Lookforanimaltracksanddrop-pings(calledscat).Largebirdslikeospreys,hawks,vultures,andcormorantsleavenoticeablewhitedroppings(whitewash)onbushes,trees,seacliffsandrocks.Whenyouseethis,lookuptofindwherebirdsroostornest.

Low tide exposes fascinating and fragile life on the rocks. Venturecarefullyonrocksforaclose-uppeekintotheexcitingtidalworldofanimalsfeeding,interactingorwaitingfortheincomingtide.

Look for whales when seas are calm.Lookforwhalespoutsorblows,

Protect wildlife habitat - Stay on trails.Goingofftrailmayharmanimalhabitatorbirdnestingareas.Keepdogsandchildrensafebystayingondesignatedtrails.

Watch where you step.Intidepools,walkonbarerocktoavoidcrushingfragiletidepoolanimals,andkeepawayfromseaweed–it’sslippery!Pleaseleave tide pool critters in their natural home. Tide booklets may be available in storesandrealestateoffices.

Stay at a distance, including drones. Ifbirdsandanimalsgetnervous,theyshowitbylookingatyou,raisingtheirheadsandstoppingwhattheyweredoing.Anychangeofananimal’snaturalbehaviorisadisturbance.
