• Windows 7 now in extended support (Jan 2020 end date)
• Poor Windows 8/8.1 adoption
• Update deployment bottleneck
• Only the current version of IE (on supported OS) will receive technical support and security updates
• Better continuity in the end user experience from Windows 7 to Windows 10
• Better upgrade options for IT Services
• Infrastructure in place for deployment and support of Windows 10

Deployment Options
Requirements for In-Place Upgrade
Requirement Details
Default image You must use the install.wim from the Windows 10 media for the in place upgrade.
Internet Explorer 11 Microsoft recommend that Internet Explorer is deployed to your environment before upgrading to Windows10.
Deployment Salutation The supported deployment solutions for Windows10 in place upgrades are;
• System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 SP1• System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 SP2• Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Upgrade 1
Limitations with In-Place Upgrade
Situation Details
Change of OSArchitecture
The upgrade process cannot change from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS due to driver and application.
BIOS to UEFI Change from BIOS to UEFI makes a change in disk layout and this is not supported in the upgrade process.
Operation SystemLanguage Change
The upgrade process cannot change the base language of the operating system.
Change in SKU Changing the operating system version is not supported. You can only go from same version to higher, e.g. upgrading from Professional to Enterprise, or Enterprise to Enterprise.
Third Party Encryption Only BitLocker encrypted devices can easily be upgraded. Check with vendor for supported method of upgrade.
Duel-boot systems The upgrade process only supports devices running a single operating system.
