Postgraduate teaching:
My postgraduate teaching involves giving lectures to first, second and third year
clinical psychology trainees who are studying towards the Doctor of Clinical
Psychology (DClin Psy).
I lecture on clinical health psychology topics integrating psychological theories
with the practice of health and clinical psychologists working in hospital settings.
I lecture on posttraumatic stress disorder with a focus on theories and models
explaining traumatic reactions.
I lecture on philosophy of mental health in which I examine clinical psychology
concepts such as schizophrenia or psychotherapeutic concepts from a
philosophical perspective.
I lecture on the quantitative research methodology in clinical psychology,
statistical analysis using SPSS, conducting systematic review and literature
review.
As part of their training, all clinical psychology trainees are required to do a
psychotherapy process project. I give advice on the design and analysis of their
projects.
I lecture on publishing in academic journals and supervise trainees on poster and
oral presentations in conferences.
I supervise service evaluation or development projects that all trainees are
required to complete. On average, I supervise 7 projects a year. I liaise with
clinical psychology service providers working in the National Health Service
(NHS) and arrive at topics for the projects. I then supervise trainees in designing,
analysing and writing up the projects in order to meet the research objectives that
different NHS Trusts have set for them.
I supervise the Doctor of Clinical Psychology theses (see later).
I supervise PhD theses (see later).
Research in Clinical/Health Psychology
I initiated and designed all of the projects below. Some projects have been completed,
submitted for publication or published. Some are waiting to be written up for
publication. Some are ongoing in terms of data collection or have recently begun.
3
All of the following projects resulted from joint partnerships with service providers
working in NHS Trusts, primary care, prison services, charity organizations and different
departments within the same University.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and medical illnesses or events
An investigation into the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder
resulting from past traumas and recently developed chronic idiopathic urticaria
(CIU). This project looks at the extent, after controlling for perceived stress, that
posttraumatic stress disorder from past traumas relates to the severity of chronic
idiopathic urticaria and psychiatric co-morbidity and whether this relationship is
influenced by personality factors, coping strategies, and the way in which
emotions are regulated.
To follow on from the above project, I have recently started looking at the extent
to which repressive coping would moderate the relationship between
posttraumatic stress disorder and chronic idiopathic urticaria, controlling for
perceived stress.
I have recently started a project looking at the relationship between posttraumatic
stress disorder resulting from past traumas and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
It also aims to investigate the extent to which different defense styles would
moderate this relationship.
An investigation into the risk factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder
and myocardial infarction. The research aims to ascertain the prevalence of
posttraumatic stress disorder following myocardial infarction and, controlling for the
severity of myocardial infarction, to determine whether patients’ personality traits
and intrinsic coping styles are predictors to posttraumatic stress disorder following
myocardial infarction.
To follow on from the above project, in conjunction with medical colleagues in
Greece, another project looks at the relationship between posttraumatic stress
disorder following myocardial infarction, attachment styles and illness perception.
An investigation into the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder
and epilepsy. It aims to examine the extent to which self-efficacy and
alexithymia would influence this relationship.
An investigation into the predictors and prevalence rates for posttraumatic
stress disorder following stillbirth and the association with locus of control.
Posttraumatic stress disorder among the criminal population
I have started a project looking at the relationship between posttraumatic stress
disorder resulting from past traumas and a tendency to commit violent crime. It
4
aims to investigate to what extent spirituality and forgiveness may moderate this
relationship.
In collaboration with the University of Nanjing in China and the Prison Fellowship
in Hong Kong, this is an investigation into posttraumatic stress disorder resulting
from committing a range of violent crimes (e.g. murder, manslaughter) among
prisoners in China.
Other projects on posttraumatic stress disorder
I have also started a project looking at the relationship between child abuse
trauma and obsessive compulsive disorder. It aims to examine the extent to which
mental pollution would mediate this relationship.
An investigation into the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder and
terror management theory. It aims to investigate whether this relationship is
influenced by the type of life-threatening event, the degree of self-efficacy,
traumatic growth and attachment style with significant others. This is also a
cross-cultural study in which we investigate to what extent terror management
reactions would differ between British and Lithuanian samples.
Stress and burnout
A comparison of nursing staff working in a hospice and those working in an
oncology unit in terms of the degree of stress and burnout. It also aims to
establish whether nurses’ competence in coping with death and engagement
in rituals/practices when faced with the death of patients are associated with
the degree of stress and burnout experienced.
An investigation into the level of stress and burnout among nursing staff who
look after people with learning disability who display challenging behaviour
and whether management issues, personality factors, health problems and the
severity of challenging behaviour are predictors to stress and burnout.
Research on Clinical/Health Psychology which is at planning stage
An investigation into whether one’s exposure to previous traumatic life
events, illness perception, and perceptions of oneself are associated with
general health problems and the severity of hirsutism.
In collaboration with medical colleagues from Greece, this study looks at
whether interpersonal dependency style, attachment style and sensation
seeking personality traits would predict posttraumatic stress disorder
following spinal cord injury.
5
In collaboration with prisons in Greece, this study looks at defense
mechanisms that these prisoners employ in order to cope with posttraumatic
stress symptoms resulting from the act of committing homicide.
An investigation into the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR) among patients who suffer from chronic pain.
An investigation into posttraumatic stress disorder following breast cancer
and reconstruction.
In collaboration with the University of Ulster, we are planning a project to
examine the relationship between posttraumatic stress and terror
management theory and to investigate whether religious coping would
influence this relationship.
Community outreach
Training and consultancy: I help to develop an enterprise environment by
developing a training and research-based Trauma, Resilience and Recovery
Centre in the Clinical Psychology Unit. The central aim is to improve the skills of
professionals. To this end, we provide consultancy services for professionals
working in different organizations in the community. We also provide short
courses and continued professional development workshops for them. These
professionals include therapists, clinical psychologists, social workers, nurses,
social services employees and solicitors.
I also organize an annual research conference which aims to bring together
clinical service providers working in NHS Trusts and trainees and bring them up
to date with some latest research findings in different areas in clinical psychology.
Applied research: Every year, service providers from the National Health Service
seek advice from us regarding evaluation of their services. In conjunction with
clinical psychology trainees, I liaise with these services providers and identify
what their current needs are, which aspects of their service they want to be
evaluated, evaluate the effectiveness of their services, identify the barriers which
make it difficult for them to deliver the service effectively and recommend
possible ways forward to enhance the effectiveness of their service.
Curriculum development
I was involved with preparing the document which subsequently obtained the re-
validation of the Plymouth Clinical Psychology Programme from the British
Psychological Society (BPS).
I am on the Academic and Research Committee which ensures that all aspects of
the academic and research components of the curriculum for the Doctor of
6
Clinical Psychology course meet the requirement of the British Psychological
Society (BPS).
I am also on the Programme Planning Committee which is accountable to the
Faculty Board. It aims to assist in the formulation and approving of all policies or
documents pertaining to the effective delivery of high quality clinical psychology
training.
I am also on the staff-student liaison committee in which we consider any matter
pertaining to the operation or policy of the programme raised by trainees and staff
and to agree action plans as appropriate. It takes forward to the Programme
Planning Committee agreed agenda items arising from discussion at this
committee.
Academic leadership: Research Director
I am the Research Director in the Clinical Psychology Teaching Unit where I take an
academic leadership role in which I:

approval for their final year projects.
work with the Faculty of Health and Social Work to maximize our research output
for the Research Excellence Framework.
Recruitment of international postgraduate students from Asia
I have initiated and implemented a plan for increasing recruitment of international
postgraduate students from Hong Kong and other parts of China. The plan is to 1)
recruit international students from the above countries to come to study in
Plymouth, 2) recruit and supervise those who are unable to come to the UK by
means of supervisors’ termly visits in their own countries, a postgraduate summer
school in Plymouth, e-mails, and web-casting. I have started focusing on Hong
Kong initially since my private annual visit to Hong Kong has made it possible to
do so. Two higher education colleges in Hong Kong have already agreed to
collaborate with us.
The School Research Committee
I am on the School Research Committee which aims to discuss strategies for
meeting the requirements for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Also, it
aims to set research policy for the staff in the School and make decisions on the
kind of infrastructure (e.g. research interests groups, sabbaticals) that can be
implemented to best support staff in completing their research, applying for
research funding and collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines (e.g.
medicine, social work) within and outside of the University.
Examination officer
I am the examination officer for the Doctor of Clinical Psychology course. I
liaise with external examiners with regard to moderating the overall standard of
trainees’ course work and the feedback that we give to our trainees. I organize
exam boards and also arrange appropriate internal and external examiners for the
Doctoral theses vivas.
Ethics Committee for clinical psychology
I set up and am the Chair of the Clinical Psychology Ethics Committee which
aims to grant ethical approval to clinical psychology trainees for carrying out their

12. International collaboration with China and Europe
In conjunction with the University of Nanjing, China, and the Prison
Fellowship Hong Kong Limited, we are in the process of setting up a series
of studies looking at the posttraumatic stress of homicide perpetrators in two
prisons in Nanjing. A couple of these studies would bear similarities with
the studies in Greece (see later) which will allow us to explore the ethnic
differences between East and West in terms of posttraumatic stress reactions.
However, there will be new research questions and hypotheses in the studies
in China which have not been tested in the sample in Greece.
In conjunction with the medical professionals from two hospitals in Beijing,
China, we completed a cross-cultural study on posttraumatic stress following
stroke. This study compared posttraumatic stress reactions between Chinese
and British stroke patients.
In collaboration with the prisons of Corfu and Koridallos in Athens, Greece,
we completed a project on the posttraumatic stress of homicide perpetrators
resulting from the act of committing homicide and on the association
23
between posttraumatic stress and dissociation experience. We are in the
process of setting up a follow-up study in which we look at further defense
mechanisms that these prisoners employ in order to cope with posttraumatic
stress symptoms.
In collaboration with the Institute for the Rehabilitation of Disabled People
in Athens, Greece, we completed a project on post-spinal cord injury
posttraumatic stress disorder and its relationship with locus of control. We
are planning another study which aims to identify whether interpersonal
dependency style, attachment style and sensation seeking personality traits
would predict post-spinal cord injury posttraumatic stress disorder.
In conjunction with a University Hospital in Athens, Greece, we completed a
project on posttraumatic stress following myocardial infarction which
investigates the relationship between posttraumatic stress following
myocardial infarction, attachment style and illness perception.
In conjunction with Lithuanian Christian College in Lithuania, we are
completing a cross-cultural study in which we compare the terror
management reactions between British and Lithuanian participants.
In collaboration with the University of Ulster, Ireland, we are examining the
relationship between posttraumatic stress and terror management theory and
investigating whether religious coping would influence this relationship.
