R3.00 incl Friday September 4, 2015 Small Business Development Deputy Minister, Elizabeth Thabethe, called on women to break the silence on domestic violence during her keynote address at SAWEN provincial event, held at Impala Park Stadium in Phalaborwa last week Friday. Thabethe said many women continue shielding their abusive husbands, in a desperate bid to be called ‘Mrs what what and so and so’. “We don’t want to see another Reeva Steenkamp situation, hence we are calling on our women to never tolerate abusive partners and move out as early as possible and stand their own ground,” she noted. Thabethe added, that women should emulate Hosi Phillia Shibulana of Nwamitwa, her fellow MP, who fought tirelessly in court to reclaim her birthright as a Chief for her community, after her cousin, Sidwell Nwamitwa and his people unfairly denied her the right to ascend the throne. “I and other women MP’s, have supported Hosi Shibulana and seven years later since she was inaugurated as Hosi, I will be going back to her palace to celebrate her birthday and Nwamitwa Day with her people. This is a victory for all women in our country and elsewhere,” she explained. Thabethe encouraged women to know their blood type, as this will allow them to know what type of food to eat and to avoid. “Our former Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins collapsed while on duty, because she had ignored earlier signs and today she still hasn’t fully recovered, because the type of work we do sometimes has intense stress, hence we need to know our blood types and follow strict diets to minimize chances of strokes and related illnesses that the WHO has noted more and more women in the Sub-Saharan region are at risk of getting infected,” she remarked. The Deputy Minister, who is also the patron of SAWEN, praised President Jacob Zuma’s government in advancing economic empowerment for rural based women. “Today we have Mama Angelinah Masuku, from the deep midlands in KZN selling her baskets products in cities such as Atlanta in the USA. Our government is doing very well in other sectors, despite our media so obsessed with the Public Protector’s Nkandla recommendations and the opposition’s rhetoric on ‘pay back the money’, she said. Phalaborwa based business woman Mercy Moagi encouraged women to take care of their feet as they are the nucleus of their bodies. “A healthy body houses a healthy mind. “You need to have a positive mind and that goes with hanging around with positive people. You must be adventurous, but keep in mind that whatever income you generate in your business, you must put some money aside to expand it,” she explained. CRIME NEWS IN BRIEF

ANCWL: Phalaborwa ANCWL Sub-Regional Deputy Chairperson Mariam Malatji, Chairperson Alinah Peta, Secretary Daisy Nkwane and Deputy Secretary Xoli Lekgau during the leaque’s women’s day celebra on at Lulekani community hall on Saturday.

The Phalaborwa ANCWL Sub-Region Women’s Day celebration went ahead in the absence of ANC ward and PR councillors and some BEC members aligned to a group called Boko Haram.

The event which was due to start at 10h00, only began at 12h00, as most leaders and members started by attending the funeral of ANC REC member and Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality PR, Councillor Mavis Malesa’s mother, at Tipeng in Makhushane on Saturday.

A branch member from Namakgale who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that since ANC Phalaborwa Sub-Region elective meeting, re-elected leadership under Chairperson Lucky Mohlala and the collective, the losing slate “Boko Haram” mostly councillors from Lulekani and Majeje, adopted a tactic of not attending almost all organizational gatherings under the new leadership.

“This trend has also infi ltrated the ANCWL, wherein we have consistently observed comrades intentionally refusing to attend or mobilise members and the community at large, to support organizational gatherings. These people are clearly pushing tribal politics, which is an unfortunate plot, as we are moving towards local elections and the organization doesn’t need such foreign tendencies,” she said.

Our source further said, the same trend was witnessed on 9 August, when ANC NEC member Pule Mabe addressed masses at the ANC Sub-Region and BA-Phalaborwa Community Forum mini-rally held at Phosphate Hall.

“They lobbied their faction not to attend the mini-rally, despite knowing that matters to be addressed during the event, were of a serious nature, concerning the economic status of the town and mass unemployment, especially within young people. We therefore ask ourselves what kind of agenda these people are advocating, as theirs is anti-prosperity,” she noted.

Another member said their host Councillor twice

passed by, driving on the main road next to the community hall, while the event was underway.

“I mean, we all went to the funeral, but as soon as it was done we rushed here, because we had a duty to fulfi ll to our people. But some others comrades just decided to boycott this important August gathering of women,” remarked a disappointed source.

Pastor Irene from Namakgale, rendered a spiritual motivation talk, while her fellow guest speaker, Namakgale Police Station Communication Offi cer Constable Dineo Sekgotodi, spoke on women and child abuse, concluding with Mida Seabi from the Department of Health touching base on HIV-AIDS.

BTYP (Ba-Phalaborwa Tswelopele Youth Production), led by director Zondi Khoza, performed a moving drama refl ecting on domestic violence.

The league’s Chairperson, Alinah Peta, thanked all women for continuing to nurture society, despite the male dominated system which is still undermining women and children.

“It is through ionic women from the struggle, such as the late Mama Ruth Mompati, that political liberation for our people has been realized, but the main task for the current generation of women leaders is to create an environment favorable for the next generation to fl ourish in education, economically and in all other spheres of society,” she noted.

The league’s Secretary, Daisy Nkowane, thanked Pat Mabunda Music Production, Two Mountains, Suzie’s Kitchen, Mma Peta’s Ramasedi and Ba-Phalaborwa Youth Production for sponsoring and making the event a huge success.

The league’s Deputy Chairperson Councillor Mariam Malatji, rendered the programme while the Deputy Secretary, Xoli Lekgau, acknowledged guests. As per usual, the presence of veteran Councillor Rose Popela, provided the much needed leadership to the league.

PHALABORWA HERALD Friday September 4, 2015 3NUUS

(1 Kon 3: 2-15)

MARKED FOR CANSA: Corné Marais (CANSA) spraying Grade 3 Laerskool Phalaborwa Noord Pupil, Riaan Luyt’s hair during the CANSA Relay for Life event last Friday.

CANSA Relay for Life succesfullCANSA Relay For Life is a Celebration of Hope and

Survivorship. Phalaborwa hosted its fourth annual Relay for Life event on Friday at Frans du Toit High school.

Cancer affects everyone and Phalaborwa as a town is no stranger to Cancer with 50 survivors invited to the event.

It is believed that one in four South Africans will be affected by cancer in their lifetime, this could be by a family member, friend, colleague or themselves.

The walk for life event this year once again

remembered those who lost their battle with cancer, but also want to drive home the message that early detection and treatment can drastically improve the chances of survival. The event started at 18:00 on Friday evening and ended on Saturday morning 06:00 because cancer does not sleep. There were 55 teams, of which one member had to be on the track at all times. The evening also saw a great number of individuals entering the grounds and showing their support.

The funds raised during the event is used for services that CANSA offers in towns and rural areas, for training and research.

“We want to educate as many people as we can so that we can reduce the number of cancer cases” says David Booth, Relay For Life’s Limpopo coordinator. “Whether it is a big or small event does not matter, it is always a success because every time we reach more people and create awareness” adds Booth.

The fi nal fi gures on the amount raised is not yet known, but the organisation was hoping to reach R100 000. At the time of going to print, the amount raised totaled about R46 000, a far cry from the target, but not at all an amount to be ashamed of. The Relay for Life committee builds on their successes every year and hope to improve their reach in years to come.

Dear Dr Sebashe, I am writing you this letter as I (a major tourism stakeholder in Phalaborwa) am very concerned about the state of our town infrastructure. It is deteriorating and maintenance appears to have been neglected. It implies such a total disrespect to the residents, businesses and visiting business and leisure tourists (from SA and international), that we can no longer guarantee to provide the basic necessary services such as electricity, water, roads and sewerage management! It is a disgrace that “Ba-Phalaborwa” (as a Tourism Destination) had a burst water pipe yesterday morning (26 August) and it had still not been fi xed in the afternoon and is still not fi xed at the present moment, due to no spare pipes or equipment available and municipal staff knocking off yesterday at 16h00. Last night Sefapane Lodge had full occupancy with 120 guests coming back from KNP safaris as well as from work at PMC who could not shower! We hosted the entire Kruger National Park management, who checked in to Sefapane and they experienced fi rsthand the inconvenience of not having water to shower or bath! We supplied buckets of water to bath, to fl ush toilets and bottled water, but I trust you agree this is below any level of comfort for any tourist! This was a total embarrassment for Sefapane Lodge, as we could not inform our guests when and if it would be fi xed, as no clear communication took place from the municipality side!

My management, and later myself, did manage to eventually get hold of the technical superintendent, Mr Mazanani, last

night (at 21h30) where we insisted on the municipality to provide a temporary solution to the water crisis. His response was that we had to go and wake up his emergency staff, staying across the road from Sefapane, and to inform them to make a temporary plan! I told him that this was his responsibility to contact his staff as I manage my staff only. Thankfully a helpful municipal technician, who was on standby, came out and rectifi ed the situation whereby we could at least provide some water to our tourists and VIP guests! How can one run a tourism business and provide “a Phalaborwa/KNP tourist experience” with:-• regular power cuts• a poorly managed and stinking sewer system (directly across from Sefapane Lodge in Copper Road)• regular water shortages • poor access roads to Phalaborwa • Illegal racing motorbikes across the road on a plot next to the cemetery!

My question to you is whether our Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality is serious about Tourism (growth!)?

As a foreign investor, I have invested large amounts of money in my business since 1994, where we employ almost 100 local staff and contribute to the SA economy through SARS. It is long overdue for the municipality to act on providing and maintaining the infrastructure we need to be a proud and clean tourism and mining town! As you are well aware, we have had recent social unrest in our town with regards to our high unemployment and not enough job opportunities at the PMC mine.

If tourists continue to have poor experiences, we will lose the tourism market share we have built over the last 20 years.....which can result in more retrenchment of

Guest House Owner of Phalaborwa writes:

After reading the front page article regarding tourism of Karin Kelder in the Phalaborwa Herald a few weeks ago, I can not help but to respond.

Most guest house establishments in and around Phalaborwa were started at least 15 to 25 years ago by the now elderly residents of our town when the future of the mines and our town were hanging in the balance. This generation aspired Phalaborwa coming to it’s full potential as a tourism town whose existence is not solely dependent on the future of the mines. Thus the drive behind spending all or most of their savings to create, grade, re-zone and market these establishments was not for their benefi t only, but for the benefi t of the town and it’s residents as a whole.

As guest house owner and part of this

generation myself, I would like to state unless attitudes fi rst and foremost regarding noise pollution in residential areas change drastically, we can forget enticing a revisit to our town. Secondly, showcasing the necessary respect and friendliness towards all tourists are also of the utmost importance at all times. Living in a tourism town and especially residing next to or near a guest house establishment, it becomes the responsibility of all parties involved to ensure these visitors a peaceful and tranquil bushveld stay which they are so dearly longing for!

Remember they are paying customers who now have the right to enjoy a tranquil stay in our beautiful town. This ultimate experience can only be achieved with the co-operation of all residents and Phalaborwa can only be the successful tourism town we strive it to be, when we all do our part.

No water left tourists dirty and dry

staff and the potential closure of tourism establishments... resulting in more unemployment...more social unrest and the tourism failure of our Ba-Phalaborwa economy! Phalaborwa is regarded (by KNP management) as a peripheral camp of KNP and has potentially been awarded by the National Department of Tourism, almost R50 million, to be developed as an activity hub in 2016.

We can market this potential tourism destination with all the effort and money available, but if tourists are not able to receive the basic services, we will lose them to our competitive tourism towns such as Hoedspruit, Hazyview, Whiteriver and Malelane (Mpumalanga province!), while Limpopo Province is in desperate need for economic growth!

On a fi nal point one must realise that in todays age of a powerful social media, happy guests will market our tourism destination! However an unhappy guest

will inform the whole world, resulting in tourists staying away from a poorly managed destination! I have cc-ed a number of (tourism) stakeholders, partners, KNP management, as well as our MEC for Tourism, the honourable Mr. Sekoati, as I am of the belief we ALL share the same concerns and we require urgent action. Limpopo is hosting the annual Tourism Month in September and Phalaborwa is part of the tourism celebrations! Let us make sure we build tourism together for the future of our Tourism Town of Two Summers! I am available to discuss potential solutions to the challenges you face. I look forward hearing from you. Kind regards.

News editor’s note: At the time of going to press, Dr

Sebashe hadn’t replied to Bertens open letter, let alone calling him to offer his apologies for the inconvenience caused to Sefapane’s business.

MASTERS: Namakgale Masters easily beat Mthimkhulu Masters 6-2 during the last games of the Mopani Masters soccer league held at Phosphate soccer fi eld in Namakgale on Sunday.

Nkowankowa United were crowned as champions at the annual Mopani Masters soccer league, during the last games played at Phosphate soccer fi eld, in Namakgale on Sunday.

Lulekani Masters failed to lift the title for a third time in a row, as they only fi nished third with 53 points, while Namakgale fi nished second with 56 having played 26 games.

The bottom of the log, saw McGregor taking position 13, while number 14 MBS were forfeited all points, because they failed to honour their fi xtures.

Nkowankowa won 20 games, drew 4, lost

one with a record of 109 goals, conceding 42 and a goal difference of 67 and attained 64 points.

The league saw newcomers Shihoko Masters, possessing former Ramotshinyadi Lebapola Chuene FC speedy forward Masiye “Quality” Ramatsoma and Wale Black Pirates’s midfi eld maestro Mokete “Bingo” Rampedi. Both Quality and Bingo could have played for any club in the PSL, but injuries and lack of exposure denied them an opportunity to showcase their God given talents.

Both Ramotsoma and Rampedi were instrumental in shaping and nurturing

former Platinum Stars captain Mathafane Stanley “Bingo” Kgatla’s career.

“At 41, Bingo and I are still going strong and the secret behind that is looking after our bodies,” said an energetic Ramatsoma moments after easily beating Matafuleni 3-0.

Rampedi says the current generation of players in the PSL are lazy to train.

“I wasn’t a speedy player, but I don’t recall any opponent during my time dispossessing the ball from my feet. I was immensely gifted as a footballer with amazing skills and a sharp mind, but we used to train intensively on a daily basis,” he said. McGregor were handed over a new soccer ball for having

showcased true sportsmanship throughout the league. Namakgale had an easy afternoon beating Mthimkhulu by 6-2 with goals coming from Collins Sepapu, a brace from Skhulule Ngwenya, another brace from captain for the day Ewi Makwala, one from Phillip Kobela while Morris Mthombeni and Vincent Mabunda consoled Mthimkhulu with a goal each. Namakgale’s regulars, including Shaka Mogoboya and Lee Ramoshaba, were rested by coach Mogobala Rapetsoa.

The league’s secretary, Sam Shipalana says the committee is busy lobbying potential sponsors to partner them when the next season resumes.

They are now the masters
