Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Deputy Principal Matters by Nathalie Bodley This week focused on the preparations necessary for the return of students to school on Mon- day, May 11. SIHS has acquired a thermal camera as an effective tool to measure skin surface temperature and identify individuals that may need further screening with virus-specific tests. All students are to proceed to the Gym for temperature testing on arrival. Please refer to the Safe Distancing Flow Chart in this Newsletter. If a student has an elevated temperature their parent will be contacted, the student will be given a mask to wear and parents are expected to collect their child promptly. We have been developing protocols for safe social distancing in all teaching spaces. In due course, all buildings will have automatic hand-sanitiser dispensers at key points, toilets have a plentiful supply of soap and paper towels for thorough hand washing. Signage is in place to follow safe hand washing practises. Toilets will be cleaned after recess and lunch. To maintain adequate hygiene in classrooms, desks will be cleaned in between each lesson and safe social distancing will be practised. To also ensure safe movement across the school, we encourage students to follow the entrance and exits as per the Flow Chart on page 3. As of next week, starting from Monday, May 11, Year 12 students will attend face to face and online classes daily. All classes will follow the online learning bell times, allowing for the 10-minute early finish of periods, so that stu- dents learning remotely can maintain their wellbeing and desks can be cleaned for the following class. Years 11 – 7 will continue with online learning in the school hall, library and classrooms. Where possible, Year 11 will be able to participate in their practical subjects. During lunch and recess, designated areas have been assigned for students in the playground and canteen area. The canteen will be fully operational from Monday serving its usual menu. Bubblers have been capped and stu- dents are encouraged to bring full water bottles and refill bottles when needed. Staff will encourage all students to maintain safe hygiene practices through frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, avoid the touching of eyes, nose and mouth and complying with social distancing measures at all times. Students are not to attend school if they have a sore throat, a cold, runny nose or any COVID symptoms. Please consider the health of those around you and continue with online learning at home. Maths Competition News This is a busy time for maths competitions. Last week students sat the online CAT competition (Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition). This week students in years 7 and 8 sat for the first official round of the APSMO (Australasian Problem Solving Maths Olympiad). Also, this week, three students from year 11 sat the final round of the Caribou competition (from Canada). Congratulations to Will G who sat the invitational Tournament of the Towns last Saturday. This is a 4 hour interna- tional exam attempted by students who have been invited to participate. Country organisers use this as part of the selection process for the Australian Olympiad Team which competes in the International Maths Olympiad. Tomor- row (9th May) he sits for the second round of the Tournament of the Towns which is a 5 hour paper. Well done Will! Year 10 Unique Cloaks – Textiles class Year 10 recently completed an assessment task that was adjusted for online learning. Students were not able to complete their sewing tasks at school; therefore, they were assigned a research and design task about Aboriginal Possum Skin Cloaks. Not many people are aware that many Aboriginal groups had a tradition of making cloaks from possum skins. These cloaks were made when a child was born and added to as the child grew, decorated with artwork that portrayed information about who that child was, their relationship to others and the land, and where they belonged. Hardly any of these historical cloaks have survived be-cause they were traditionally buried with the person who owned the cloak. Year 10 researched these cloaks and then created their own "cloak" designs using Aboriginal art techniques and telling a story about themselves. The results were fabulous!
