DermapenDermapenPresident’s message
Dear Members, Greetings from Executive Committee of KN IADVL.I am happy to note that the next edition of DERMAPEN is ready for
distribution. As the new office took over in the month of November last year,
the team rolled out several programmes for the new academic year. SARATHI - a soft skills training programme for clinic staff, whose foundation was laid last year, completed its first round across Karnataka, covering almost all regions of the state. The programme was conducted in 10 centres, catering to 311 delegates. This program was appreciated by all beneficiaries and requests have poured in from across the state for additional programmes. This programme is one of its kind, conducted for the first time by an association belonging to IADVL. I thank and congratulate all those who worked for it, specially Dr. Manjunath Hulamani, for coordinating it effectively.
Another new initiative, “SETUBANDHA” – a program to connect primary care physicians and other specialists with dermatologists, was conducted with a moto of educating do’s and don’ts of treating common dermatological diseases, and timely referral of cases to nearby dermatologists. The program emphasised the prevalence of steroid abuse and problems related to such an act. The program also showcased recent advances in the field of dermatology, so that general practitioners and other specialists can refer relevant cases to the dermatologist. The event was conducted at Kalburgi as a pilot project, and was accepted well. It will be extended to other parts of Karnataka in the coming years.
The program “MANTHAN”, aimed at training fellow dermatologists in areas of personality development, clinical practice and personal life is on the cards and will be rolled out in the coming months.
The regular programs of KN IADVL were well conducted by the respective groups. “VITILIGO RATH” was a grand success across the state and again, is first of its kind in the country. It also featured video display for public education and I sincerely thank our secretary Dr. Manjunath and Elangovan & team of Hagnous for their tremendous efforts in accomplishing this herculean task. The message reached all the 224 taluks of the state covering approximately 5 to 10 lakh people, directly through RATH and indirectly through social media. Our dream of an office for Karnataka IADVL, its sister society BDS along with ACSI, is soon to be materialised. The government has agreed to provide space for the building, the logistics for which will be worked out after registration of the property.
The tragic aftermath of floods in Coorg has left us with a purpose and a goal. I request members to contribute generously to the Coorg flood relief fund, work will be taken up under the leadership of Dr.Belliappa, one of our members from Coorg. We need to groom younger dermatologists as next generation leaders. We also need to work towards medicolegal issues pertaining to clinical and procedural practice. These issues have cropped up along with the growth of Cosmetology and Dermatosurgery. We are in the process of appointing an advocate as a retainer, in collaboration with Bengaluru dermatological society.
Many of our members have brought laurels to KN IADVL through their publications, participation in international conferences and by assuming key positions at National IADVL. The whole KN IADVL family applauds their achievement.
I am proud and happy to share that we are hosting DERMACON 2019 in the month of January 2019, which for the first time is getting elevated to an international level, thus truly termed as DERMACON INTERNATIONAL 2019 – Bengaluru. This conference is further expected to change the way conferencing is done in India, similar to the land mark conferences of 2000 and 2009.
I take this opportunity to thank all my EC members, all committees and each and every member of KN IADVL for providing timely inputs and cooperation, for the smooth functioning of the association activities.

From the Editor’s desk
It is a matter of delight to bring to you the next issue of
Dermapen, the official bulletin of IADVL- KN, capturing
all its achievements and activities in the last season.
IADVL – KN, under the able leadership of
Dr. Chandrashekar B.S., has been a flagbearer of innovative
programmes aimed at the interest of the members, the
academics and the community.
Vitiligo Ratha, a novel and noble initiative of IADVL KN,
has travelled to 227 taluks in Karnataka this year, spreading
awareness about the disease. By inculcating video messages
and road shows, it has created wider ripples of awareness
this year.
Another flagship programme of IADVL-KN, SARATHI- a
soft skills training programme for clinic staff, has been well
received by the members all over the state. The event was
conducted in various parts of Karnataka and witnessed an
impressive turnout.
SETHUBANDHA- an integration programme with other
specialists and general practitioners, was conducted with an
intention to curb the menace of resistant Tinea and steroid
misuse.
We thank all the district co-ordinators who have actively
participated in the various activities and provided the inputs
necessary for the Dermapen.
We request all members to update us about your
individual achievements and the achievements of other
members, and also the events being held by your department
and sister societies.
Dr Nagesh TS Dr Namitha Chathra
Editor, Dermapen Assistant editor
From the Honorary General Secretary’s deskDear Members,
The past year has been busy
as usual for IADVL Karnataka.
There were regular academic and
community dermatology activities
all through the year. The presidential
program this year had quite a few unique activities which
blended well with the regular calendar of events.
We had a 2 day MIDCUTICON this year which was a
blend of academics and relaxation. It was also financially
enriching for the association.
Vitiligo Ratha, which is a flagship program of IADVL KN
that was started last year, went one step further this year.
This time, it travelled to all 227 taluk HQs of Karnataka.
Road shows with video messages about vitiligo awareness
was very well received by general public all over the state.
Soft skills development is an essential requirement for
dermatology clinic staff. SARATHI, a soft skills development
programme by IADVL KN, focussed on this requirement.
IADVL members from all over the state sent their clinic and
hospital staff for this program making it a grand success.
In this era of resistant tinea and steroid misuse,
it is necessary to educate general practitioners and
other specialities about these two public menaces.
‘SETHUBANDHA’ which is a primary connect program
launched for educating general practitioners, paediatricians
and gynaecologists, is the step taken by IADVL KN in this
direction. This program also intends to educate other
specialities about the latest advances in dermatology.
I thank President Dr Chandrashekhar B.S. for introducing
so many member friendly activities besides being a guiding
force in all our endeavours.
I thank all the members of EC, all district, zonal and state
coordinators , sister society presidents and secretaries and
all members, for your cooperation in all the activities of
IADVL KN. I request all of you to continue your cooperation
in the future in the same zeal.
Long live IADVL

IADVL Karnataka Vitiligo Rathayatre 2018Indian association of Dermatologists Venereologists and
Leprologists (IADVL) Karnataka Branch has organised this public awareness campaign about Vitiligo ( Leukoderma or white patches). Starting from 25th June 2018, which happens to be the World Vitiligo Day, 3 road show vehicles will travel in different directions, covering all 227 Taluk HQs of Karnataka over the next 30 days.
In each of these 227 Taluk Head quarters, short videos about Vitiligo will be played at crowded locations. Pamphlets will be distributed and public interactions with dermatologists of the area will be held.
Vitiligo is a benign, non lethal skin disease. But it is associated with a plethora of problems due to public misconceptions.
Firstly, the persons suffering from vitiligo think that it is incurable, and try various fake ‘therapies’ and become desperate and depressed when these fail to cure them.
Secondly, general public look down upon vitiligo patients and treat them as untouchables. As a result, vitiligo patients are finding it difficult to have a normal social life thus aggravating their mental suffering.
Thirdly, the society has many superstitions about vitiligo deeply embedded within it.
To fight these social problems of persons suffering from vitiligo, IADVL Karnataka branch intends to achieve three important goals through this Rathayatre:
All vitiligo patients should be made aware that it is a treatable skin problem. All latest treatments available in the world are very much available in Karnataka
General public should be made aware that Vitiligo is not a contagious disease. Society in general should be free of all the stigmas and superstitions associated with vitiligo.

YUVADERMA“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember,
involve me and I learn” - Mr. Benjamin Franklin
“YUVADERMA” a novel initiative crafted by IADVL-KN, the first of its kind, first by any state, a forum exclusively for the residents of Karnataka. Yuvaderma aims at empowering the youth in dermatology, providing them a platform to get involved in IADVL activities from the very beginning of their career, under the guidance of stalwarts in this field. All the residents, through out Karnataka are encouraged in all aspects, to get involved and learn more. This forum is not only academic, but as an added advantage has brought us all together as a community in dermatology.
Yuvaderma E-bulletin was started under Yuvaderma by IADVL KN in 2015. It is a bi-yearly newsletter, of the residents, by the residents and, for the residents. Now after 3 years and 6 editions, it stands strong, with its roots intact and branches spread out, and is setting an example to other state branches under IADVL.
This year has been very fruitful for Yuvaderma, as its popularity has reached its peak. There are various activities conducted by Yuvaderma under the guidance of present IADVL – EC members, a special mention to Dr B. S. Chandrashekar and Dr Manjunatha R, who have been very encouraging and supportive. Yuvaderma resident’s poll has been conducted successfully through-out Karnataka and two new sections have been added in the Yuvaderma E bulletin, a Kannada section and a nonacademic part. For better coordination and involvement, a postgraduate representative has been selected from every medical colleges in Karnataka, they are equally involved in various activities by Yuvaderma. Yuvaderma is also looking forward to introduce IADVL KN Facebook page, where all the residents, teachers and private practitioners will be under one roof, this would be released during CUTICON 2018, Mysore.
The most novel activity being introduced this year is the “Resident’s session”, which is going to be conducted during CUTICON 2018, Mysore. This will be a 1-hour resident-oriented session with best thesis award presentation, release of Facebook page and an extensive panel discussion by distinguished and renowned dermatologists on various topics related to residency and post-residency. We have many more activities lined up for the next few months too. “Sky is the limit”, is what we believe in, at Yuvaderma.
There are many respected teachers and residents who
Dermapen May 201817
have been behind the success story of Yuvaderma. We would like to take this opportunity, and thank each and every person who have helped us, guided us, supported us and have provided us all that we needed, to create a forum, in order to voice the thoughts of budding dermatologists.
Long live Yuvaderma, Long live IADVL – KN.
