Let’s analyze

TIM:

So, Linda, what exactly are Tag questions?

LINDA:

Tag questions are interrogative expressions we add to a sentence.

TIM:

Why do we add tag questions to a sentence?

LINDA:

We add Tag Questions to a sentence when we want to:

• Comment about something.

• Confirm information.

• We want to be sure the person we are talking to agrees with us.

I bet you want to see some examples, don’t you?

TIM:

Sure, I do.

LINDA:

Ok, let’s analyze the following diagram. Pay attention to the colors:

Then, in tag questions, the tense and subject in the sentence match the one used in the tag.

In affirmative sentences, we use a negative tag:

And, in negative sentences, it is just the opposite, we use an affirmative tag:

Let’s talk

Intonation is important in tag questions. When we use a Tag question to comment, our voice goes down in intonation, so we invite the listener to agree with us. Listen to the example:

Education is the most important thing for your future, isn’t it?

When we want to confirm information through a Tag question, our voice goes up. Listen to the example:

It was not fair, was it?

Let’s talk
