ID numbering system – a modification of the Henry system Arthur Connely (1730 – 1804) starts the line of descent and is given the number 2 (his brother, Thomas, whose genealogy is presented in another file, was given the number 1). I give an individual’s spouse the same number, so Arthur’s wife, Jean, is also given the number 2. Their oldest child is given the number 21, the second child the number 22, etc. In the third generation, the oldest child of person 21 is assigned the number 211, the second child of that person is 212, etc. Number 22's oldest child is 221, the second child 222, etc. If there are more than nine children in a particular family, the 10th child is assigned the letter a, the 11th child is assigned the letter b, etc. I include adopted & step-children in my history, so the birth order of all natural, adopted & step-children considered together determines the number that an individual gets. Thus the individual digits or letters in an person’s ID number represent generations and the specific numbers or letters represent birth order within that generation. When you find an individual in a decendancy report, you can gather numbers or letters working up & left to get his ID number (converting 10 back to a, 11 to b, etc.).
