Message board post by Drury Hatcher:After Leah's death, the heirs instituted a suit to provide for sale of the personal property. The suit was filed in 1830, and the final order was not entered until 1839. At the time of Leah's death, ten children were alive, and George and Thomas had died leaving heirs. Hannah James, the only child mentioned in Leah Pollards 1822 will, was the only child not included in Joseph's will to share in the residuary. Of the thirteen mentioned, Hezikiah apparently died without children as he is not mentioned in the court proceeding.

SPECULATION ABOUT CHILDREN:

Nothing has been found identifying the children of Zachariah and Rhoda. The biography of Alexander Pollard in Chadwick's History of Shelby Co., Ind., published in 1909, (see pages 952-3) makes clear that they were the parents of John J. Pollard who settled in Indiana. That biography implies that there were other children who spread out to various states, but the language can be read to refer to Pollards in general rather than Zacharia and Rhoda in particular That biorgraph indicates that the family first moved to North Carolina, and John J. appears in the 1830 census for Stokes Co., North Carolina. The 1850 census indicates that John children who were born in 1833 and earlier were born in North Carolina. The milita records for the War of 1812 for Stokes Co. show only two Pollards - John and Hansford. Their pension applications at the National Archives indicate the enlisted the same day in the same militia company. Information found in the census records for Hansford indicate that he could be a brother of John, and I show him as a brother. An April 22, 2005 e-mail received from Eric Mudell, a descendant of John J. Pollard, states "John J. Pollard and Nancy E. (Simpson) Pollard have one [a Bible] dating to their marriage in 1861. At a later time, a family member apparently scribbled in a few notes. Among them were the names :Hansford Pollard, Stephen Pollard, Orpha Pollard and Christina (Mitts) Pollard. No attribution was made regarding the inclusion of these names handwritten into a "notes" section of the Bible at a later time. I'm not certain how these names figured into the lineage"John J. was a son of John and a grandson of Zacharia. It is tempting to speculate that the list is a list of his father's brothers and sisters. As indicated in the notes for Hansford, I had already suspected that Hansford was brother. Perhaps the others are also siblings. Orpha Pollard, like Hansford, settled in Bledsoe Co., Tennessee, and she is listed in Hansford's household at the time of the 1850 census. Also in the household and listed immediately before Orpha is Chastine Pollard. Is he Christian; nothing has been found for a Christian Pollard. Borth Chastine and Orpha were born in Virginia - Chastine about 1784 and Orpha 1792-1800 [1850 census, Tennessee, Bledsoe Co., Eastern Dist., Roll M432_870, p. 379, family 392. Accordingly, I have added her as a daughter.A search for information for Stephen resulted in the identification of only one possiblity - a Stephen, b. 1801 or 1802 in Virginia, who was in Tennessee from at least 1839 until 1859\60 when he moved to Missouri. This Stephen's children later

Generation 2 (con't)least 1839 until 1859\60 when he moved to Missouri. This Stephen's children later identified their father's birthplace as Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee - all states connected with Zachariah, John J., and Hansford. No one else appears to have paid any attention to this Stephen (he is not listed in postings for Stephen Pollard at RootsWeb or Ancestry.com or in the Pollard message boards). I am tenatively identifying him as another son based on his listing in the John J. Pollard Bible, his age, and birthplace. Further research is needed.Yet another possiblity is Clabourn Pollard. He is listed next to Zachariah in the 1813 tax records of Snow Creek, Stokes Co., North Carolina, and he may be another son. He was born in Virginia about 1789 and appears in the Bledsoe Co., census from 18.. thru 1850. He, like Hansford, Orpha, and Chastine, lived in the eastern dist. of Bledso Co., and they three men lived relatively close together (Clabourn famill 379 and Hansford, Chastine and Orpha family 392). I am tenatiely idenfiying Clabourn as another son, but no one should rely on this idenficiation.Another Pollard appears in Bledsoe Co who might be releated. 1850 Census, Tennesee, Bledsoe Co., eastern dist, Roll M432_870, p. 407, family 772, with family of John Gentry, Tean Pollard, 71 [b. 1779] male, no occupation, b. Virginia, cannot read or write. In 1860 census, Tenna, 74 [b. about 1786] in Virginia; in the household of Nancy Pollard in 1860; Tennessee, Bledsoe Co., Pikeville, M653-1240, p. 398, family 266. Sex is indeterminate - in 1860 in the column of sex there is the beginning of the word "Hermaphrodite"Many of the individuals who might be related to Zacharia were in Bledso Co., Tennessee. Unfortuately, the wills and tax records of that county were destroyed early in the 20th century.

I, Francis Pollard, sen., of the county of Charlotte and state of Virginia do make and declare this writing as and for my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills-1. In the first place I direct the prompt and speedy payment of all my just debts.2. I lend unto my wife Martha Pollard during her natural life a negro woman, such as she may choose out of my estate, to wait upon her.3. All the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal I direct to be kept together under the control and management of my executors for the comfortable support and maintenance of my wife during her natural life - and in case the profits of the estate should prove insufficient for that purpose, my executors are authorized to use such portion of the principal as may be necessary.4. At the death of my wife, I order, will and direct that the whole of my estate, real and personal, then remaining be sold, by my executors and the money arising form the sale be divided as follows -5. To my grandchildren John Powers and Martha Powers, children of my deceased daughter, Parkey Powers, one twentieth part to be equally divided between them, and the residue of said money to be divided into nine parts as follows -6. To my sons Thomas S. Pollard, Francis Pollard, Isaac Pollard, and William Pollard one ninth part each, without any charge against them.7. Pollard a debt due him from my said deceased son Warner Pollard amounting to one hundred and eighty-three dollars and 86 cents [$183.86], to carry interest from this day till paid, in case the said ninth part should not amount to enough to pay the whole of the said debt and interest, then they will pay so much thereof, as the said ninth may amount to and no more.8. I direct that one ninth part be set apart for the use of my son George Pollard and to be paid over to my son Thomas S. Pollard as a trustee for his use, but not to be in any manner liable to the debts or control of the said George but out of this portion of my estate thus provided for my said son George, I order, will, and direct my executors to pay to my son Thomas S. Pollard for his own use the full amount of a debt owing to him by the said George, to wit the sum of one hundred thirty-two dollars and five cents [$132.05], with legal interest thereon from the 25th day of March, 1826, till paid, and in case the said ninth should not amount to enough to pay the said debt and interest, then they will pay so much as the said ninth may amount to and no more -9. To my daughter Eliza Maloney I give one ninth part, but out of her ninth I direct my executors to

Notes for Moses Pollard:It appears the middle name Moses came from his maternal grandmother, Mary Moses. It survived at least one more generation when Joseph G. Pollard names his first son Moses G. Pollard.

His second son, Joseph G. Pollard, then named a son Isaac G. Pollard, and it is interesting that Isaac was a family name...that of Nancy Morris' grandfather, Isaac Morris. More reasons to believe we have the right Virginia family.

I copied the following from Carolyn Gould. Based on the naming of Joseph G. & Mary Gilstrap Pollard's children, the sequence and patterns, I have long believed that this "Moses Pollard" was Joseph's father. Still can't prove it, but, as did Carolyn Gould, I am tentatively penciling it in.

Father of Joseph is tentative, but fits known information.

Elizabeth was the dau. of Joseph Pollard and Leah Morris. The 1830 chancery cause complaint of the heirs of Joseph after Leah's death shows "James Deaton in right of his wife Betty Deaton, formerly Betty Pollard" among those " entitled to full shares of said [estate]& are absent from this Commonwealth" Her wedding bond shows her Robert Pollard giving consent, and a witness to the consent was Leah Pollard. Some internet trees incorrectly show Robert as her father.

Notes for Joseph G Pollard:While I have never learned what the "G" stands for in Joseph's name, George is quite prevalent within the family. In fact, if my research is correct, Joseph George Pollard was his Grandfather, and George Pollard was his GGrandfather. I'm suggesting that his middle name was George at this

Page 20: Descendants of George Pollardreynoldspatova.org/histories/GeoPollard-GenRpt.pdf · James Brown from Goochland Co., witness for same, to be paid for 2 days & coming and going 20

George Pollard was his GGrandfather. I'm suggesting that his middle name was George at this time (7-24-2013).

As of 3/16/07 Joseph's birth date and location are not confirmed.

Mary Gilstrap Pollard from the "Pension Papers, Civil War Record":

"Her name was Mary Gilstrap. She also declares that she was married to the said Joseph G. Pollard, deceased, on the 17th day of June A.D.,1843, at Putnam County in the state of Missouri by William Cook, a Justice of the Peace; that there is no public or private record of said marriage, that she cannot procure the evidence of said witnesses, but herewith forwards the best evidence of said marriage which she is now able to procure."

NOTE: several databases list Mary's husband as "Hugh Pollard". The most reliable information I have re that is that "Hugh" was a nickname for Joseph G. Pollard. The marriage license does show "Hugh" Pollard. However, back in those days you didn't show a drivers license...or probably even a birth certificate. I suspect you simply gave the names....and it stands to reason that they might use a popular nickname.

See Notes under spouse Mary Gilstrap Pollard. She applied for and received a pension based on her son Moses G. Pollard's military service.

Found this reference that does not make sense at the present time, unless Hugh was a nickname for Joseph; but if Joseph was Hugh, then why wouldn't Mary apply for a pension based on his service record? The children are right, and the marriage date is right. As of entry date, have not found Civil War records on Joseph.

Yates Publishing claims as a source the Crawford Co, 1860 census showing Mary Gilstrap Pollard with Hugh G. Pollard. I have not located that census. However, as quoted below, the 1860 Federal Census shows Mary Gilstrap living with her children by Joseph G. Pollard, and one two year old

Notes for Mary Gilstrap:Summary From Decade 1820: on the 1850/60 Census Mary Gilstrap Pollard named her children according to a formula that was used back then:

The oldest daughter was named after the mother's mother: Lockey F. Pollard/Lockey GilstrapOldest son after the father's father: Moses G. Pollard (probable that Moses G. Pollard was Joseph G. Pollard's father.)Second daughter after mother: Mary Elizabeth Pollard/Mary Gilstrap Pollard,Second son after mother's father: Isaac G. Pollard/Isaac Gilstrap.Youngest daughter Cordellia Carrie Pollard: not sure who she would be named after.

Moses Pollard, VA, 1820: we don't know what the "G" stands for, but it is consistent throughout our Pollard line: Joseph G.....Moses G.....Isaac G. In this instance it is likely that Joseph G. Pollard, f/o Isaac G. Pollard, would have named his first son "Moses G" after his father.

Note: Source Pension Papers and Civil War Record, State of Arkansas, County of Washington

On this 13th day of June A.D. 1864 personally came before the George W.M. Reid, Clerk of the Circuit Court within and for the County and State, aforesaid, Mary Pollard a resident of Washington Co in the State of Arkansas aged 41 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the Act of Congress approved July 14th 1862: That she is the widow of Joseph G. Pollard and mother of Moses G. Pollard who was a Private in Company A commanded by Captain Joshua Dudley in the 1st Regiment of Ark Vol Cav in the war of 1861 who died at Springfield in the State of Missouri on the 18th day of October 1862 from the effects of Typhoid Fever received in the service of the United States.

Generation 4 (con't)Census shows Mary Gilstrap living with her children by Joseph G. Pollard, and one two year old child, Jesse Columbus Johnson, fathered by Herod Peter Johnson. The census erroneously lists Jesse C. as a Pollard. He wasn't! He was a "Johnson".

There are additional reasons to question this information:

The 1850 census shows Mary Pollard living with her parents: Isaac & Lockey Davis Gilstrap. At the time her family included Lockey, Moses, Mary, Isaac, and Cordella Pollard. Cordella is listed as "6mos" on a census taken in November, 1850. Allowing for an additional 9 months since conception, the last acceptable date for verifiable knowledge of Joseph G. Pollard would have been about October, 1849. Having found no death certificate for Joseph, unless they were divorced, I assume he died between October, 1849, and the census of November, 1850.

The 1860 census shows Mary Pollard, age 37, living in Jasper Twp, Crawford County, Arkansas. Her family at the time was listed as Lockey F., Moses B., Mary E., Isaac G., Virginia C., and Jesse C. Pollard. We know that Jesse C. Pollard was actually Jesse Columbus Johnson, son of Herod Peter & Mary Gilstrap Pollard. Rick, a descendant of Herod Peter Johnson & Mary Gilstrap Pollard, states that there is no proof that Mary & Herod Peter Johnson were ever married. That explains why, in her petition for Moses G. Pollard's pension, given in 1864, she could honestly state that her husband, Joseph. G. Pollard, had died, and that she had never remarried.

Note that in a much more legal scenario than applying for a marriage license, Mary Gilstrap Pollard stated that her husband was Joseph G. Pollard....NOT Hugh G. Pollard. However, we have distant Pollard cousins in Texas who swear on all that is holy that his name was Hugh. I'm not sure how they can ignore the documentation above.

i. LOCKEY F. POLLARD was born in 1842 in Hudson, Macon, Missouri, USA. She married (2) GEORGE W. WEBB on 30 Jul 1863 in Barry, Missouri, USA.

Notes for Lockey F. Pollard:"Rick", the descendant of Jessie C. Johnson who provided me with mostof the Pollard/Gilstrap family data I have used stated that he found marriage info re Lockey Pollard & George W. Webb, but he was unable to verify that this Lockey Pollard was the daughter of Isaac G. & Mary Gilstrap Pollard.

I'm assuming it is until proven otherwise.

A Lockey Pollard married George W. Webb on 30 July 1863 in Barry County, Missouri. Unsure if this is Lockey, the daughter of Joseph and Mary, but it seems to fit.

ii. MOSES G. POLLARD was born in 1845 in Hudson, Macon, Missouri, USA. He died on 16 Oct 1862 in Springfield, Green, Missouri, USA.

Notes for Moses G. Pollard:Buried: Springfield National Cemetery.

Died of Typhoid Fever while serving with the US Army during the CivilWar.Served in the 1st Arkansas Cavalry, Company A., Arkansas Union Army.

Not sure why the "Military Service" shows 14 May 1863...Moses died 16 Oct 1862....but everything else matches. Probably a "typo" when the records were copied.

POLLARD, THOMAS C.

Was on the board of trustees for Philander Smith College, a black college in Little Rock, AR, in the 1870s.

The Seminary was located at Eighth Street and Broadway in the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church. The first Conference Trustees of the new school, elected in 1878, were: Ministers I. G. Pollard, W. O. Emory, G. W.Sams, W. H. Crawford, A. J. Phillips, L. W. Elkins and Laymen A. L. Richmond, William La Porte and Frank Carland.

Marriage Records Pulaski Co, ARK Book 7 Page 581, 5-nov-1883

Isaac G. Pollard age 31Elizabeth Dillahay age 16

Elizabeth was under age. Her mother Mrs Francis Dillahay's consent tothe marriage was included in the record. In a publication called Pulaski County Historical Review, Vol 44 Num 2 Published Summer 1996, was an article entitled Interracial Marriages and Cohabitation in Pulaski Co, ARK 1870-1900, by Kelley Metheny. On page 35-36 while discussing interracial marriages, the following passage appeared.

Little Rock claimed center stage for another scandal that highlightedviews and concerns of both races. The Reverend Isaac G. Pollard a prominent minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, wed a sixteen year old mullato girl in November 1883. After the ceremony they left for Memphis, and authorities did not discover until later that the girl's mother and Justice Chamberlin, who performed the ceremony in ignorance of the girls race, expressed opposition to the union. In contrast a black gentleman who knew the couple approved of the marriage and hoped it would set a precedent for personal freedom when choosing a spouse or even a friend.

To deny there were outbreaks of violence against mixed couples elsewhere in the state is to ignore the facts, but they were not representative of the entire society and occurred less frequently than many suppose. (Taken from the Arkansas Gazette 6-nov-1883 and 7-nov-1883, and Miscegenation file, Tom Dillard).

Another daughter, Mrs Gertrude M. Jenkins preceded her father in death some years ago.

Mrs Mary E. Reed of Sasakwa, OK, a sister, and Jesse C. Johnson of Detroit, a Half Brother, also survive. There are 23 Great Grandchildren and six Grand Children.

NOTE: I have no idea how the obituary listed Louisa Freeman as Isaac's wife when, in fact, the death certificate lists Elizabeth Dillahay Pollard. Furthermore, from about 1890 to 1920, the only wife listed with Isaac G. Pollard in every census was "Liza" Pollard....or Elizabeth Dillahay Pollard.

There was a note from Rick to the effect that Isaac G. asked the Methodist church to release him upon the finalization of his divorce. We don't know from whom he needed the divorce...probably Mary Hays Pollard.

Either way, we know he married Elizabeth Dillahay in 1883 and remained married to her until his death. His descendants from that marriage are in northern Indiana, in and around Michigan City, La Porte, County, Indiana. All they knew was "Grandpa Isaac" and "Grandma Elizabeth".

John Rolland WWII Draft Registration lists Amos Hogan Pollard as the "Name And Address Of The Person Who Will Always Know Your Address". We show John Rolland's death as 1941. Not sure when the Draft Registration Card was prepared.

John Rolland Pollard was indexed as "John Polland" in the 1920 census. They also showed his age as 49, birth about 1871. (John Pollard is provided parenthethically as an alternative.)

The actual census clearly states Pollard, the age is 29, not 49, birthplace - Pennsylvania; father's birthplace - Missouri. This is clearly John Rolland Pollard.
