"We always heard that the McElgunns camefrom Donagh between Newtownbutler and Lisnaskea, and that the walls of the old house were stillthere, in the townland of Kilturk. Uncle Patrick said that there are many McElgunn and Mcllgunnheadstones in Donagh and Aghalurcher. He said that it was only a nickname for a family of theMcGuires, there were so many of them, and the 'gunn' part meant brown or reddish hair. A FatherPhillip McElgunn was ordained priest in 1672 by the bishop of Down-and-Conor, and was registeredas serving in Drumully in 1705, under the penal priest-hunting system. The most reknown of theclan was Cahal Bwee Mac Giolla Gunna, Yellow Charlie, 1680-1755. He was said to have gone for thepriesthood, even as far as Salamanca in Spain by some accounts, but gave up because of a girl. Whenhe came back he found her married to a strong Monaghan farmer and took to the drink, an excellentexcuse, not that Charlie ever needed one. He lived the life of a journeyman poet, toper rake,vagabond, along a band of country that took in Monaghan, south Fermanagh, west Cavan, and northLeitrim, where the Celticí ways and language held out for a long time. Because he was a rascal,because he talked Irish and they were trying to get the people to talk English, the priests whokénuckledéé under to the English persecution banned him from their parishes; many of the tales thatsurvive in the folk-memory, tell about Charlie pulling some fast one on the priest. His poem aboutthe Yellow Bittern is cleaver and sophisticated, an ironic and wry commentary on his own drinking,which has influenced several of the moderns like Yates, Clark, Ledwidge and Heaney ... ." .... I expect the details you give will meanmore to him than they do to me. There is a considerable difference in age between my father and I; sohe's aware of many historical facts about the family and has known many of the people concerned.What I myself know is rather limited. Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, the name Mac GiollaGhunna means "the son/follower of the brown". It is a Maguire sept. And perhaps was found mostlyin Maguire territory in South Fermanagh. It may not be related, but a Maguire chieftain called "TheBrown" was responsible for expansion of their lands into Cavan. Lough Erne seems, to me, to be akey in this. I gained these rather vague insights a while back when I read a few chapters from "TheFermanagh Story", a book by a chap called Livingston/e. Fermanagh = Fir Manach meaning the menof Manach; or something like that.In the 18th century there was a Gaelic poet by the name of Cathal Bui Mac Giolla Ghunna. He spentmost of his time about Blacklion. This is a small village in the Republic (either Cavan or Leitrim) nearthe Fermanagh border. In his most famous poem, he compared himself to a yellow bittern that haddied because it couldn't get a drink from the ice covered lough. For he was a "rake", and had afondness for alcohol. There are hymns in one of the Irish hymnals that are due to him. He may not berelated to us, but, the story is interesting in itself.The title of the poem I mentioned about is "An bonnan buidh" or the yellow bittern. I'm not the majorexpert, so the spellings, dates and facts are subject to error.The best thing that you could do now is to send a letter to my father. He'll get your previousmessages this Wednesday. By the way, Lois na sceithe means "the fort of the shields". A small hill to the north of



the town was where the Maguire's used to crown their kings. Apparently, this was quite impressive.They had 100 harpers that played for the occasion. The "Red Hand of Ulster" symbol, is in fact aMaguire symbol. As legend has it, two men (one a Maguire - I don't know about the other) raced tosee who would get ownership of a piece of land. The rule being that the person who first touchedthat land with his hand owned it. Anyway, the Maguire reckoned he was losing, so he cut his handoff with his sword and flung it to claim the land. She gave me acopy of your work on the McElgunns, for which I am very grateful indeed. There are one or twoerrors in the early period that you might like to correct and I can also fill you in on the McElgunnbranch of my wife's family (ie the descendants of Philip McElgunn).With the assistance of the late Louis McElgunn I wrote a wee piece on the family back in the late 80sor early 90s and I think it is still largely accurate.'Hugh McElgunn was born in 1776, his wife Bridget in 1782. The couple settled in the townland ofClonosey, Parish of Annagh, County Cavan. In the Tithe Applotment Book of 1825 they are recordedas sharing a holding with a McDonald family. The beneficial owner of the property is not named, butthis is likely to have been land held by the local Protestant curate (as it contains an ancientchurch/burial site). The TAB entry reads:First (rate land) Second (rate land) Third (rate land) Tithe payableMcDonald 50-0-0 £3-3-9McIlgunn 17-1-30 I believe that Hugh and Bridget had seven sons and at least one daughter, Ann. It was Ann whomarried Alexander McDonald and through him inherited the holding at Kilturk North near Donaghin Fermanagh. The shared holding and intermarriage suggests a very close relationship betweenthese families, both of whom undoubtedly originated in this part of Fermanagh. When Alexanderand subsequently Ann died in 1889, the McElgunns got the holding. From the large memorial stone in Clonosey, we know that Hugh McElgunn died on 6 December 1846.Bridget lived to 94 years of age, dying on 10 May 1876. Their sons (and presumably grandsons),meanwhile, had rented holdings of their own, as we can see from Griffith's Valuation of 1857. Thereturn gives the name of the denomination, its map reference, the occupier, name of beneficial owner(landlord), whether the holding included H (house) O (offices) L (land), the extent of the landholdingand the valuation. TeemorePhilip McElgunn Revd Francis Saunderson H-O-L 31-2-7 £25-0-0 There is no mention of a seventh son amongst the above, but this was probably Edward who wasliving with his family in Clonosey in 1841. Edward was 42-years-old and had married in 1829. Hisfamily (as recorded in the census of that year) included his wife Catherine (then aged 40) , his sonsPatt (aged 10), John (aged 8), daughter Ann (aged 5) and son James aged 3. There is no mention of theyoungest in the family, Mary, who claimed (in making a pension application in 1912) that she wasabout a year old when this census was taken. In the paperwork concerning her application, it isrevealed that the family suffered eviction from their holding. They then lived in 'a small cabin besidethe Blackbog near Sugar Loaf, Belturbet, convenient to a field called "Stone park field" owned by PatMcElgunn'. We know that Mary married William Dolan and that they had 12 children of whom sixwere deceased by 1912 . Her eldest daughter Kate was descried as 'alive and married' aged 44, theyoungest Annie was then 28. Mary claimed to have been married in 1867, at 26-years of age. But what about the others recorded in Griffiths.James (of Clonosey with land in Ballinlough) [date of death not known]Thomas (of Clonosey) died on 11 August 1875 aged 62 years. Letters of Admin were granted to JohnMcElgunn of Clonosey... aforesaid the son).Patrick (of Ballinlough and with lands in Belturbet) died in 1876 aged 70. His will was proved in1884 by John McElgunn of Clonosey in said county, Farmer, one of the executors. Again, thisprobably refers to John, son of Thomas as we know that John, son of Edward, died in Glasgowc.1881. John, son of Thomas, is also likely to have been the person recorded present at the death ofBridget McElgunn (hs grandmother).Michael McElgunn (of Ballinlough). In 1884 'letters of administration of the estate of MichaelMcElgunn late of Illinois, USA, farmer, who died as is believed in 1864 ... were granted to MargaretMcElgunn of Ballinlough .. the widow.' A Margaret McElgunn is recorded as having died in 1886,aged 57.Hugh McElgunn (of Kilnacranagh) died 7 February 1892. I discovered two relevant marriage records in the register for Annagh (although the quality of themicrofilm was deplorable). The first was dated 15 January 1860 or 1861 when a Patrick McElgunnmarried Mary Martin (witnessed by John McElgunn and Ann Fitzpatrick), the second dated 13February 1860 or 1861 when Anthony McElgunn married M[argaret?] [Ma[hon?] (witnessed by JohnMcElgunn and Ann McDonald. A further birth is recorded for the 26 May 1879 when Ellen d. of Patrick McElgunn & Mary Martinwas christened. The sponsors were John McElgunn & Mary McElgunn. A note in the register informsus that Ellen married Patrick Connell on 15 May 1924 in the church of St Paul, New York City.There are several further births and marriages of McElgunns recorded in the neighbouring parish ofDrumlane. Most of these relate to the famioly of Philip McElgunn, another son of Hugh & Bridgetwho is recorded in Teemore townland in the Griifith's valuation above. He was apparently marriedto a woman named Seery. Amongst their children, Mary married Patrick Fitzpatrick of Clowniny,son of John Fitzpatrick of Teemore.We also know that Phillip's son John married Catherine Timmins (Kate Tummon) of Goladuff inGalloon parish, Fermanagh (a very short distance by water). They wed on 29 November 1877. Thewitnesses in St Mary's Newtownbutler were Kate's sister Alice and John's brother? Thomas. Withthe death of his aunt Anne in 1889, John inherited a 120 acre farm at Kilturk. Their home in the 1901census was described as a thatched four-room cottage. Of their children1. They hadSeán, Louis (died 28 Feb 1996), Joseph (Josie) electrocuted as a young man, Emma, Kathleen (MrsO'Grady in Clones), Baby (died aged 7), Dympna (Mrs Holland of Clones), Eithne and Annie. 2. Mary Alice born 1883. She married Thomas Corr of Killeevan, County Monaghan and they hadTom, Paddy, James, May and Bridie (who married Pat Grue of Clones). 3. Annie born 14 April 1883. She married James McConnell of Greaghcashel in Galloon parish. Theirchildren included Kitty, Terence, Gerald, Teresa (Baby) (my mother-in-law recently deceased) andJimmy. 4. Brigid born 1887. She married Luke Bogue of Aughahinch, Newtownbutler. Their childrenincluded Jim, Kevin, Seán, Emma, Mary and Alice. Jim (RIP) married Mary Moore and was father ofLiz Mahon. 5. Kathleen (Cassy) born 1889. She married James Hughes of Bunnoe, County Cavan. They had MaryJane, Teresa (Mrs Monaghan of Clones), Barney, Séamus and John.



6. Eliza Jane (Lizzie) born 1891. She married another Luke Bogue, a cousin of her sister's husbandfrom Mountgibbon, Brookeboro. Their children included Pat, Gerald, John, Annie and Mary. 7. Emily Agnes born 1893. This is all I can give you for now. I suspect that Brdget's surname was not Fitzgerald (as youspeculate) but Fitzpatrick. There are one or twoerrors in the early period that you might like to correct and I can also fill you in on the McElgunnbranch of my wife's family (ie the descendants of Philip McElgunn).With the assistance of the late Louis McElgunn I wrote a wee piece on the family back in the late80s or early 90s and I think it is still largely accurate.'Hugh McElgunn was born in 1776, his wife Bridget in 1782. The couple settled in the townland ofClonosey, Parish of Annagh, County Cavan. In the Tithe Applotment Book of 1825 they arerecorded as sharing a holding with a McDonald family. The beneficial owner of the property is notnamed, but this is likely to have been land held by the local Protestant curate (as it contains anancient church/burial site). The TAB entry reads:First (rate land) Second (rate land) Third (rate land) Tithe payableMcDonald 50-0-0 £3-3-9McIlgunn 17-1-30 I believe that Hugh and Bridget had seven sons and at least one daughter, Ann. It was Ann whomarried Alexander McDonald and through him inherited the holding at Kilturk North nearDonagh in Fermanagh. The shared holding and intermarriage suggests a very close relationshipbetween these families, both of whom undoubtedly originated in this part of Fermanagh. WhenAlexander and subsequently Ann died in 1889, the McElgunns got the holding. From the large memorial stone in Clonosey, we know that Hugh McElgunn died on 6 December1846. Bridget lived to 94 years of age, dying on 10 May 1876. Their sons (and presumablygrandsons), meanwhile, had rented holdings of their own, as we can see from Griffith's Valuationof 1857. The return gives the name of the denomination, its map reference, the occupier, name ofbeneficial owner (landlord), whether the holding included H (house) O (offices) L (land), the extentof the landholding and the valuation. Edward was 42-years-old and had married in 1829. Hisfamily (as recorded in the census of that year) included his wife Catherine (then aged 40) , his sonsPatt (aged 10), John (aged 8), daughter Ann (aged 5) and son James aged 3. There is no mention ofthe youngest in the family, Mary, who claimed (in making a pension application in 1912) that shewas about a year old when this census was taken. In the paperwork concerning her application, itis revealed that the family suffered eviction from their holding. They then lived in 'a small cabinbeside the Blackbog near Sugar Loaf, Belturbet, convenient to a field called "Stone park field" ownedby Pat McElgunn'. We know that Mary married William Dolan and that they had 12 children ofwhom six were deceased by 1912 . Her eldest daughter Kate was descried as 'alive and married'aged 44, the youngest Annie was then 28. Mary claimed to have been married in 1867, at 26-yearsof age. But what about the others recorded in Griffiths.James (of Clonosey with land in Ballinlough) [date of death not known]Thomas (of Clonosey) died on 11 August 1875 aged 62 years. Letters of Admin were granted to JohnMcElgunn of Clonosey... aforesaid the son).Patrick (of Ballinlough and with lands in Belturbet) died in 1876 aged 70. His will was proved in1884 by John McElgunn of Clonosey in said county, Farmer, one of the executors. Again, thisprobably refers to John, son of Thomas as we know that John, son of Edward, died in Glasgowc.1881. John, son of Thomas, is also likely to have been the person recorded present at the death ofBridget McElgunn (hs grandmother).Michael McElgunn (of Ballinlough). In 1884 'letters of administration of the estate of MichaelMcElgunn late of Illinois, USA, farmer, who died as is believed in 1864 ... were granted to MargaretMcElgunn of Ballinlough .. the widow.' A Margaret McElgunn is recorded as having died in 1886,aged 57.Hugh McElgunn (of Kilnacranagh) died 7 February 1892. I discovered two relevant marriage records in the register for Annagh (although the quality of themicrofilm was deplorable). The first was dated 15 January 1860 or 1861 when a Patrick McElgunnmarried Mary Martin (witnessed by John McElgunn and Ann Fitzpatrick), the second dated 13February 1860 or 1861 when Anthony McElgunn married M[argaret?] [Ma[hon?] (witnessed byJohn McElgunn and Ann McDonald. Amongst their children, Mary married Patrick Fitzpatrick ofClowniny, son of John Fitzpatrick of Teemore.We also know that Phillip's son John married Catherine Timmins (Kate Tummon) of Goladuff inGalloon parish, Fermanagh (a very short distance by water). Albrecht, 70, a retired cookand a resident of Hempstead who died Friday at Nassau Hospital, Mineola, after a short illness. Mrs. Albrecht, born Teresa McElgunn, came to New York 50 years ago from Ireland, andworked as a cook in many private homes in the metroplitan area for 20 years. She was a cook at the rectory of St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church, Franklin Square, for 11years, retiring two years ago. She then went to live with her daughter, Marie Ann Hardman of 4Chicago Ave. She was a member of the senior citizens' club of St. William the Abbott Church,Seaford. Other survivors include a son, the Rev. Gerald R. Keith of Dayton, Ohio, and a brother,Thomas McElgunn of Ireland. Mass at 11 AM tomarrow at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church,93 Greenwich St., Hempstead; burial in St. Charles Cemetery, Pinelawn.
