PLOS Medicine - The Global Burden of Snakebite: A Lit-erature Analysis and Modelling Based on Regional Esti-mates of Envenoming and Deaths We estimate that at least 421,000 envenomings and 20,000 deaths occur worldwide from snakebite annually. These figures may be as high as 1,841,000 envenomings and 94,000 deaths. On the basis of the estimation that the total number of snakebites is two to three times the number of envenomings, we estimate that 1,200,000–5,500,000 snakebites may occur globally. The vast majority of the estimated burden of snakebite is in South and Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Cen-tral and South America, as identified in previous estimates of the global burden.

• WHO - World Heath Organization - The global burden of snakebite: data retrieval produced information for many of the world’s 227 countries, which were grouped into 21 geographical regions. The researchers estimate that 421,000 envenomings and 20,000 deaths occur worldwide from snakebite each year, but warn that these figures may be as high as 1,841,000 envenomings and 94,000 deaths, especially in areas of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia where anti venoms are hard to obtain. India has the highest estimated annual enven-omings and deaths: 81,000, and 11,000 respectively.

• International Society on Toxinology - Global Snakebite Initiative. We estimate that, globally, at least 421,000 envenoming's and 20,000 deaths occur each year due to snakebite. These figures may be as high as 1,841,000 envenoming's and 94,000 deaths. Based on the fact that envenoming occurs in about one in every four snakebites, between 1.2 million and 5.5 million snake-bites could occur annually. CONCLUSIONS: Snakebites cause considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide.co - © Vital Brasil

The disorderly growth of urban centers provides more favorable conditions for the establishment and proliferation of these animals among these centers, endangering both people and animals.

PROBLEMS ON THE HEALTH AREAIN BRAZIL, DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS, 380 PERSONS BITTEN BY A VENOMOUS ANIMAL CAN HAVE SERIOUS HEALTH INJURY OR LIVE LOSS.Nowadays the accidents by venomous animals continue a grave problem of public health in Brazil, so much by the number of cases recorded, as much as by the gravity presented, being able to drive to the death or heavy sequels and generate temporary or definite incapacity for the work.

As the human population expands and the habitat for animals is reduced, accidents involving venomous animals continue to grow. WHO (World Health Organization) estimates about over 4.5 million venomous accidents every year. In Brazil alone, this equates to almost 140,000 bites annually.

ACCIDENTS WITH VENOMOUS ANIMALS IS THE 3RD CAUSE OF HEALTH INJURY COMPLAINS IN BRAZIL. MÉDIA ANUAL DE AGRAVOS - SINAN — Information System for Notifiable Diseases — Brazilian Department of Health.

ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMSThe Project is about animals of fundamental importance in the ecological system. They control the population of rodents, rats and insects and contribute a lot in the prevention of illnesses and epidemics. The dissemination of information on this project in an accessible and dynamic form will assist in its preservation.

For the ecology and preservation of the fauna, is necessary take into account that the man is no more than one of the species that inhabit this planet and as such can be so much the predator like the prey.

Therefore the disclosure of these knowledge for the preservation of

health and of the fauna is very important.

PROBLEMS ON EDUCATIONThere is not a database with photos and information available online with all Brazilian snakes. This makes it difficult to identify these animals.

When finished the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will have a rare image database with all Brazilian snakes, some of the venomous spiders

and scorpions, all photographed under the same conditions.

ntan

Part of the photos of the Project will be under Creative Commons free copyright use. Will be available to technicians, doctors, population and students. Any one that needs photos of these animals to illustrate a doc, report etc.

Have many letters from Brazilian Institutions and Universities mentioning the utility of the Project as support to students and on professional formation.

Although the Project is still only a prototype online, we receive many requests from people and companies asking to identify animals.

Through the Portal with photos taken for use in identification and executed following a scientific visualization methodology, it is possible the immediate identification of vipers, snakes, some spiders and other venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna. Will assist in the initial procedures of the treatment caused by accidents and as a reference for local support.

The Project, will allow the poorest and more distant communities also have access to technical information and photographs of its database.

The animals are important, the serum is costly and the medical handling's also. The economy of financial and human resources, generated by an informed and aware population, can turn out to be very important.

However, for the population, these information needs to be of quick access and easy comprehension. Thousands of books in libraries is not of much use to who can die in just a few hours!

The absence of pictures with identification quality; the official statistics with the huge quantity of accidents with venomous animals; the absence of quick access and to easy comprehension of complex technical information; the ecological consequences of the big quantity of animals being uselessly killed; the difficulty that is the identification of these animal, that kill or incapacitate so much persons for so long, was what motivated us to start the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project.

This Project, by its importance on public health and on the echo system, transcend the simple animal identification.

laudio Machado

THE MAIN PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE:1. Public Health (See page 6) - Provide subsidies and procedures for handling

accidents with venomous animals.

1. Ecology (See page 8) - Preservation of these animals.

1. Education (See page 8) - Training in Schools and Universities. It will be a refer-ence source for consultation.

Public Health - Animal identificationThe identification of the animal is of vital importance for the decision of the serum to be applied.

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project – Pag. 6 of 21

Page 7: Description of BRAZILIAN SNAKES Project - identification of venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna

The survival or worsening of the health of the victim of venomous animals depends very much of the initial measures adopted. The importance of a good source of information for its identification is invaluable. Preferably it should be administered in the first 2 hours.

Poisoning by a venomous snake, scorpion or spider is a serious medical emergency requiring immediate attention. Anti venom should be given only if its stated range of specificity includes the species responsible for the bite.

Importance of identifying snakes

Identify the animal that caused the accident procedure is important in that it:

• The identification of the animal is of vital importance for the decision of the serum to be applied.

• The serum or anti venom is specific to one snake genre, having no effect on the others and preferably should be administered within the first 2 hours.

• The survival of the patient depends very much on the initial measures adopted. The importance of a good source of information for its identification is invaluable.

• Despite the importance of clinical diagnosis, which guides the conduct in most accidents, the causing ani-mal must, to the extent possible, be sent for identification by a trained technician.

Identification Program

A database of technical information and photographs, prepared specially made for identification about not venomous and venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna. It will be accessed via an Identification Program, created for the project.

Initially will relate not venomous and poisonous animals (snakes, snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions) of the Brazilian fauna, and later add animals from neighboring countries, as extensions of the Amazon rainforest of Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

The Identification Program will made possible to identify animals using information such as color, shape, pattern, region, and other behaviors. You can also for example, not only choose the location for a camp and know which venomous animals exist there, but also have references of local support as hospitals with serum, Fire Department, Environmental Police, CIT, Civil Defense existing in that region.

Proposes to list not venomous and venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna. Brazil currently has cataloged 366 species of snakes, 56 of these are venomous.

Each animal will have its description page (see example) for supply subsidies in vital and immediate decision-making, as well additional facts about habitat, habits, preservation and care.

Ecology - Preservation of these animalsThe preservation of these animals (snakes, vipers, snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, caterpillars) depends heavily on the dissemination of existing knowledge about them, both to avoid unnecessary deaths and to avoid the handling and release these animals into wrong environments.

Is it dangerous? It should be eliminated? Can it be removed? As and by who? A confrontation can be avoided? Can we coexist with him?

By his ecological value, the animals that do not offer danger should not be eliminated, therefore are important in researches for our survival, as well for the elaboration of antidotes and new medicines. E INSTITUTE

It is frightening to imagine the enormous quantity of these animals that are being killed by fear and ignorance. With the present demographic expansion the consequences of this in few years will be, at least, catastrophic! For both sides.

These animal are treated as they were disposable. The act - just in case, kill!.- Is absurd and should stop.

One of the main goals of the Project is to find, through its Advisors, a viable solutions for a coexistence with these animal. The solution is in education. Who knows does not fear!

It is very important the dissemination of knowledge for the preservation of public health and wildlife. However, for the people, this information must be easy to understand and of quick access.

IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVES IN EDUCATION ARE: Maintain an online database with technical information and high quality

photos, available to students, technicians and interested persons.

Create videos and webinars (online seminars) to train medical, technicians, hospital personnel etc. The reception of persons bitten by venomous animals in the hospital emergency room must be immediate and priority number one. There should be no delay in attending.

The theme Accidents with venomous animals is universal and will always be present as long as people and these animals coexist.

The project will start in Brazil and is being planned to add other countries. We are using programs and methods adopted worldwide by scientific and technical communication specialists. This will ensure an easier portability of this project to other idioms.

The consulting team was selected for its ability to not only ensure a broad coverage in the most recent scientific concepts, but also for their interest and be able to continue the project. Our intention is not to create a static Project, online or printed, but a continuous and efficient movement of technicians, professionals and individuals interested in the subject over the years to come. Data and information will be kept updated.

We understand that our pretensions are great but the necessity of a global project of this social and public health spread is even greater. This will be the first steps of a long walk.

Snakes are very beautiful animals with highly graphical movements and amazing patterns. We intend to explore this. To make the most informative photos as possible and at same time show a beautiful animal. People must learn to see these animals as what they are, animals, not monsters.

The photos must inform, instruct, inspire, amaze and provoke respect for species that are much unknown and eliminated as garbage

Method used in the photosAll photographs made specially for identification will have the same clean background and same angles. The absence of natural interferences will facilitate the identification and comparisons of the snakes. ALL LIVE ANIMALS!

Snakes are very difficult to identify. There are people with an instinctive repulsion and fear, a psychological tendency to avoid looking at these animals. All this makes identification more difficult.

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project – Pag. 13 of 21

Page 14: Description of BRAZILIAN SNAKES Project - identification of venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna

Our first objective will be pictures for use in identification following a scientific methodology of visualization.

Security during the photographsMore than 200 different snakes will be photographed in the studio and on a special table. With about 10 pictures for every animal we will make at least 2000 pictures of snakes. Some spiders, scorpions, centipedes and caterpillars.

These animals are extremely dangerous, unpredictable, quick and deadly. They can cause terrible injuries. It will be adopted severe security measures.

The animals will be handled by highly trained and experienced technicians.

Because of the dangers in this work, in order to avoid possible legal action and compensation to the sponsors, an insurance contract with a reputable insurer providing coverage for injury or fatality during the shoot will be done through a lawyer. This will ensure that operators and representatives, receive a compensation in case of injury or fatality. A guarantee for the Company (ies) Sponsor (s).

Photographic Exhibition

Exposition with the 40 best photographic selected photos. This material will be at disposition of Sponsor (s), schools, museums.

Photos will be printed in a special long lasting paper, frames and packaging.
