Few welding points

EB welding

2 prototypes for the tests of EB welding

Goal : to see the deformations made by EB welding

Steps :

-manufacturing the parts A and B with coaxiality tolerances of 50 microns

- to machine a centering device and to insert it inside A and B

- make few welding points by EB welding

- remove the centering device to avoid to keep it prisoner

- make the EB welding

RESULTS

1. To support the parts A and B during the EB welding

2. A large conical shape is not necessary (with a large conical shape, the welding power is higher therefore the deformation is also higher too)

3. The centering device must stay during the welding but must be demonstrable after the welding

Procedure Comments

Machining in 2 parts Material is 316 LN forged

Cleaning Following stainless steel cleaning process

Firing 950°C for 2h At 650°C for stress-relaxation

Copper platingof 2 parts 12 microns

Test of copper plating at 400°C Test made on the 5 sheets

Is it necessary ?

RF contact welding RF contacts in CuBe

EB welding

Leak test ≤ 1.10-9 mbar.l.s-1

RF measurement Carefully with the cleaning

Firing 300°C A final cleaning process

The proposal of the manufacturing process for the reentrant BPM

Conclusion

- a conical shape between the part A and the part B allows to centre ,

- on the other hand, a large support conical shape is not necessary and is perhaps unlucky (the large powerful introduces some deformations)

- for reduce the deformations, the speed of welding must be increased, the depth of welding must be reduced
