TOPOGRAPHICAL BUREAU

February 10, 1931

Hon. George U. Harvey, President of the Borough of Queens.

Dear Sir:

I beg to submit a report containing a description of private and family cemeteries in the Borough of Queens.

The trend of progress in the Borough of Queens has in recent years almost completely obliterated the rural aspect of many sections of the 3oroiigh. Where sparsely settled viilages were, populated districts now stand, containing thousands of homes. Where once one viewed only farm land, now developments appear ranging from streets of ordinary width to majestic boulevards. This unprecedented progress has com- pletely erased from the topogrcphy of the Borough many private ceme- teries, some of which date back to the time of the first settlers on Long Island.

In the course of the final mapping of the Borough of Queens, survey- ing parties of the Topographical Bureau, office of the Borough President, determined the location of many private cemeteries. Besides being of historical interest, the records contained in the epitaphs on the head- stones in these cemeteries are of considerable genealogical value, and may be c.f service to thosz seeking to prove their descent. Questions of land ownership might be clarified by the information obtained from these cemetery records.

Believing that a permanent detailed record of each private cemetery would be of historical and genealogical, and even legal, interest to pos- la-: : r l ~ t j , I I-ia~e had [he irl~cripiions contained on the headstones, together

with the location of the graves, copied and compiled into book form.

This book conta~qs an index map of the private cemeteries, a detailed sketch of each, and a list of the inscriptions that appear on the head- stones.

A legend is shown on the index map containing the name of each cemetery; opposite the name is a nutnber, which number corresponds to the number on the rnap indicating the approximate location of the cemetery.

The detailed sketch of each cemetery shows the exact location of each grave; a number is given to each grave on this sketch.

Respectfully,

CHARLES U. POWELL, Engineer in Charclc

EDITOR'S PREFACE

The Queens Borough Public Library rejoices in the posses-

sion of records of some of these graveyards made before the

Topographical Bureau started its file. The library records

are, in several places, fuller than those of the Topographical

Bureau. The two files have been combined since it is the aim

o f the editor to present these records in as fuil a form as

possible.

It is a cause for rejoicing that such men as M r . Powell and

his associates are alive to the necessity of preserving for the

use of future generations such iiiformation as is found here.

It has been a pleascre and a privilege to work on this book

and to cooperate with the Topographical Bureau in its com-

pilation.

The editor wishes to acknowledge indebtedness to the work

of the late Wi l l iam F. Wyckoff, Henry Onclerdonk, Jr., and

Wi l l iam S. Pelletreau. Thanks are also due to Mrs. Josephine

C. Frost of Brooklyn, Mr . Arthur Wh i te of Newtown, Mr . R.

G. Debevoise of Woodhaven and Mr . W. A. D. Eardley of

Brooklyn.

ALICE H. MEIGS.

INDIAN CEMETERY-LITTLE NECK

COPY OF A LETTER TO GEORGE G. DORN RE. THE INDIAN

CEMETERY ON BROADWAY, EAST OF CORNELL'S LANE,

LITTLE NECK

Lit t le Neck, Long Island, N. Y.

Dec. 2, 1919.

My Friend

In 1636 on account of the troubled conditions of New England the

ancestors of James and Charles Wancus, \Wattere&, carme to what they

called Lit t le Neck, after their old home a t Stratford, Conn., and named

the nest village Great Neck, Cow Neck, Mad-man's Neck, Wigwam Pond,

etc. The land grants spread around them like nzts. In 1642 Robert

Hicks acquired a large tract about Hempstead and Flush~ng. Stephen

purchased several thousand acres. Thomas Hicks in 1666 obtained from

Governor Nichols c patent of 4003 acres, including Great Neck and Lit t le

Neck. As the Hiclts and Quakers waxed strong the glory of the family

departed. The faniily graves were desecrated by the whites a t the Point

(now Douglas Manor, the burying ground of the Rocicawcy and Matine-

cock Indians), ;hey had been forced from their burying ground overiook-

ing the bay (now the golf ground on the old Thorne property a t Great

Neck), and the whites were closing in upon this l itt le spot, and so accord-

ing to the Records a t Queens County Clerk's office, we read that Silvia

Hicks or Hubbs purchased these nine acres which had always been her

home, and paid for them in the usual way of civilization. So that is how

along the roadside where the iron shoes of the pale face horses instead of

the soft moccasin tread, sleep the dead of the family and several whites

too poor to own a grave, for lo these many years.

(Signed) JAMES E. WATERS,

Chief W i l d Pigeon.

Following information supplied by the last sur- viving male member o f his family, Harry L. Van Wicklen:

The South Side Burial Ground was donated by the Van Wicklens about 1681, a t which time they settled i n Aqueduct.

Each farmer was al lot ted a piece of ground a t that time; among them the RYDERS, DUR- LANDS, FREDERICKS, STOOTHOFFS and VAN WICKLENS.

Of later years the plots i n some cases have been buried over and over again; the old settlers having passed away or have taken no interest i n the ground. The permission for burying was given by Henry Lo t t Van Wickien a t this time, and tine people s t i l l hold t o this permission, burials having been made as late as this Spring past (1919).

No. 23 WILLET BURYING GROUND

The Wi l le t Farm was in the south part of Flushing where Cedar Grove

Cemetery now lies and the Wi l le t graveyard was near the northern line

of the farm on Northern Boulevard.

In 1766 Thomas Wil let sold the farm to Lieutenant Governor Cadwal-

fadei Colden ieservii;g the right to bury his family in t h ~ graveyard.

In Colden's deed there is a clause giving him the right to be buried in this

ground. In 1890 Will iam S. Pelletreau visited this graveyard and copied

such of the stones as were then legible and incorporated the information

in a note to his "Abstracts of Wills" published by the New York Historical

Society.

The Colden estate was conf~scated and sold after the Revolution and

later became the Cedar Grove Cernet~ry. Colden's house was the office

of the cemetery, and the graveyard was left undisturbed. In late years

the house was torn down and a fireproof structure toolc its place. The

cemetery was graded over and the graveyard has entirely vanished. Pelie-

trecu's is the only record we have of this old family. Here the mortal

remains of Governor Colden are supposed to rest.
