KS4 ENGLISH HOMEWORK GRID Year 10 – Unit 1 Descriptive and Narrative writing Each week your teacher will set you one of the tasks below. You may at any point during the course of the term complete the challenge or Exam and assessment tasks/ questions. Focus Homework Tasks Current Learning 1. Use the worksheet to research the Gothic – produce a factsheet. 2. Using the CA task banks, create detailed mind maps of possible ideas for all 5 options. Arrange your ideas into the following categories: ideas, HQLFs, themes, messages & structural devices. 3. Rewrite the exemplar paragraph using short and simple sentence structures and then again using complex sentence structures. How does this change the writing? 4. Use the worksheet to upgrade the sentences so they ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’. The more detailed, the better. 5. Write a story in no more than 200 words making sure there is a clear beginning, middle and end. Revision 1. Produce a revision sheet for HQLFs. Give definitions and examples of each one. You should include at least 8. 2. Revise SPAG – write down the rules of punctuation and grammar – you might want to find grammatical errors in real life contexts! 3. Write down your main ideas for your Descriptive CA onto cue cards and revise until you are confident. 4. Write down your main ideas for your Narrative CA onto cue cards and revise until you are confident. 5. Read “Of Mice and Men” ahead of term 2 and keep a journal of events; pay close attention to character, themes and author messages. Challenge 1. Perhaps the Gothic or another of your choice. 3. Find a description from a book at home or in the LRC rife in description and write a review of it. 1. Write a monologue as George at the end of section 1; adopt George’s dialect and reflect upon the likelihood of the dream being achieved. 2. Having read section 2, make notes on all of the marginalised members of society; why did Steinbeck choose to include these characters? 3. Make detailed notes on Steinbeck’s use of foreshadowing in section 3. You should refer to at least 3 examples and give supporting evidence. 4. Re-read section 4 and write a description of Crooks and his bunk. You will need to read this section closely to fulfil the requirements of this task. 5. Re-read this final section of the novella. Write 3-5 paragraphs outlining why Steinbeck chose to end the story in this way. You should consider both language and structure in your answer.

Revision 1. Research The American Dream, The Great Depression and the history of migrant workers in America. 2. Brainstorm the most significant themes in the novella. Make sure you are using a range of quotations to support your notes. 3. Make character cards. You should make notes on key quotations and analyse each one for RAVEM. 4. Re-read “Of Mice and Men” and keep a journal of events; pay close attention to character, themes and author messages.

Challenge 1. Read Steinbeck’s ‘Travels with Charley’ and make notes on how Steinbeck’s life could have influenced his fiction. 2. Write an alternative ending to the novella where Lennie survives. Try to adopt Steinbeck’s style. 3. Read Steinbeck’s ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ and make notes on how Steinbeck portrays the lives of migrant workers.

1. Write a dialogue as though you are Lady Macbeth in Act 5 Scene 1. Describe her motivations and regrets about encouraging Macbeth to murder King Duncan. 2. Explain how the theme of loss is presented in the character of Macbeth in Act 3 Scene 4. 3. Explain what happens to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Act 5 Scene 1-2. Make detailed comparisons about how they have changed since the start of the play. Use at least four close references to the text to explore these changes. 4. Read the poem Cousin Kate by Rossetti and answer the questions attached. 5. Write an essay comparing Lady Macbeth to a character from a poem of your choice.

Apply your knowledge to Macbeth by explaining the significance of the Witches and their impact on the plot and characters.
