Palm Springs Art Museum has opened the highly anticipated exhibition Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe on September 5, which will be on view through December 13, 2015. The exhibi-tion merges fashion, film, and material culture, while exploring the fashion world’s most coveted object, its rich cultural history, and its complex relation-ships to fantasy, functionality, identity and power. Organized thematically, Killer Heels fea-tures more than 110 contemporary high heels and 50 historical designs drawn from designer archives, the Brooklyn Muse-um, and the Met-ropolitan Museum of Art’s renowned costume collec-tions. Beyond the archetypal forms – stiletto, wedge, and platform – the emphasis is on designs that play with the sculptural, architectural, and artis-tic possibilities of the high heel using innovative or unexpected materials or techniques; and that push the limits of functionality, wearability, and even conventional beauty, through surprising structure, shape, or height. Palm Springs Art Museum is located at 101 Museum Drive, Palm Springs. 760-322-4800.

Palm Springs Art Museum will debut the Kaplan/Ostergaard Glass Center in the McCarthy mezzanine, featuring world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly’s End of the Day # 2 standing chandelier as a centerpiece of the new Contemporary Glass ex-hibition. The Chihuly chandelier was relocated this summer from the museum’s Elrod Sculpture Garden into the new glass center, requiring disassembling and reassembling the 281 pieces of the artwork into a new configuration, totaling 25 hours of work.
The Kaplan/Ostergaard Glass Center’s new location is situated under a massive sky light offering a light-filled environment. The center presents a variety of glass sculptures and techniques ranging from casting to glass blowing and other creative meth-ods. Diverse styles and subjects range from the narrative and fig-urative to the natural world and the exploration of color in space. End of the Day # 2 is the centerpiece of the space, surrounded by artworks of other renowned international artists who have had an impact on the development of the contemporary glass move-ment in major art centers throughout the world.

It’s the beginning of a new era. Come taste the New Classic at Mr. Lyons, where we give steak a conscientious modern update with a menu that puts local small farms first. You may know our space, family-owned and operated for over 70 years by David Lyons as Lyons English Grill. Reimagined in 2015 by Tara Lazar, Mr. Lyons is the new-est offering from the Foundation 10 family, taking the same attention to detail we’ve brought to Cheeky’s, Birba and Alcazar to a new vista on the South end of town. Evoking the old Hollywood glamour that Palm Springs is famous for, our dining salon is black and white marble, wood, brass, and luxurious velvet booths; a fine dining experience steeped in classic elegance. The menu is steak-centered with an endless choice of sides, and the tableside service--a hallmark of classic steak house dining--offers the kind of personalized experience you won’t soon forget. If you’re looking for an informal night out, sample the laid-back menu in our lounge, a more casual setting for savoring a true classic cocktail or something seasonal and new. We also have two private dining rooms for special events and will soon be offering patio seating. Located at 233 East Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. 760.327.1551

Sherman’s Deli and Bakery is a true culinary landmark in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this Kosher-style family restaurant has been the “meeting place” for locals, vacationers and celebrities for over a half a century. Sherman Harris came to the desert in 1953 to visit a friend
East Coast Deli with West Coast Style
at Lawry’s Steak Ranch. He fell in love with the area, stayed on to manage the ranch and realized his true calling when he opened Sherman’s Deli and Bakery. A true family restaurant, it is now run by his son Sam and daughter Janet. Sherman may not be with us anymore, but his presence is felt every day in every way. Sam and Janet remember bussing tables and waiting on tables and listening to their father’s frequent reminders to “treat every one who came through the doors as though they were a guest in your home”. He loved his customers and his community and they loved him back. Sherman’s loyalty and dedication to customer service is as evident today as it was then, carried out by Sam and Janet in the same caring manner as always.

STEPHEN BAUMBACHLANDSCAPE AND PORTRAITURE PHOTOGRAPHERFor over 40 years, Stephen Baumbach has pursued the thing that has captivated him since High School…the art of photogra-phy. He has taught in classrooms, work-shops and been exhibited in numerous shows nationwide. His images range in scope from rodeos to national and inter-national architectural icons. Now settled in Palm Springs, CA since October 2014, his eye is on the surrounding desert…the off-the-grid and outlier areas…that yield an extraordinary beauty he captures with his artists’ eye and his trusty Canon. All his photographs are produced digitally and he personally finishes each print himself. His love of the desert has him exploring the surrounding areas including the Anza Borrego, Algodones Dunes and Slab City
among others. He plans his sojourns through the use of satellite and weath-er maps, looking for the areas that will yield the treasures and hues he is aim-ing for…the browns, reds, blues, pinks and yellows, which reveal themselves at different times of day or night. He refers to some of the images he shoots as the “Eighth Wonders of the World” and there are many who would agree with him. Stephen’s work is broken up into series, which currently include the Anza Borrego desert and Kemuri, which is a study in smoke. His works may be views at www.stephenbaum-bach photography.com.
