DESIGN A WEB APPLICATION USING MVC ARCHITECTURE FOR FLOOD RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PART OF WHITE NILE IN SOUTH SUDAN.
YOUSEF ALI
S MOHAN
Introduction
UNMISS is mandated to consolidate peace and security in South Sudan.
UNMISS has over 10,000 personnel deployed in nineteen different locations in the country.
It is essential that UNMISS personnel are updated at all times to enable execution of their assigned tasks.
Problem
The continued effectiveness of UNMISS is critical to peace and development in South Sudan.
White Nile river flows through South Sudan. In rainy season, the river gets flooded affecting low lying areas alongside its banks.
UNMISS personnel must, at all times, be aware of flood situation and how it is going to affect them.
Research Question How does flood impact effective functioning of UNMISS in
South Sudan? What architecture patterns can be proposed to create a web
application for hazard assessment?
Approach
Critical elements that would impact effective functioning UNMISS. Safety of UN Personnel. Safety of tools and UN infrastructure. Availability of road network for conduct of operations. Non availability of real time information on flood risks.
Research Proposal Design a web application using MVC architecture for flood risk
assessment for part of White Nile in South Sudan.

Discussion
Maximum extent of flooding is less than 1500 m on either side of the river.
The depth of flood ranges from 0 to 2 m. None of the MISS locations fall in flood hazardous zones.
However, the UNMISS location at Malakal is around 188m from the flood risk zone, Renk around 390m and Melut is 1000m from flood risk zone.
There are considerable road stretches that would not be available during floods. UN location – Renk, Malut and Malakal are likely to be cutoff during floods.
