Meet our team

Logan CosgroveTeam Manager

I’m the only girl in theteam and I hope myperspective will bothground the others andinspire them. I hope mycreativity and passion willencourage them and Iwish to gain a technicalunderstanding ofengineering and technicalduring my time in theteam.

I have chosen to compete inF1 in schools a second timebecause last time I designedthe car, this was an invaluableexperience but I was unableto help in other componentsinvolved in the competition. Ihope this experience in mynew role will help me growand show me newopportunities for work andinterest.

As the design engineer I hope thisexperience will teach me practicalmanufacturing knowledge and thedesign process from CAD to creation. Ialso think this challenge gives me thechance to use some really coolmachinery and battle with concepts thatI don’t get to explore in school.

Ben BirtwistleDesign Engineer

Matthew RitchieSocial Pioneer andManufacturing EngineerI am competing in this challenge topush me out of my comfort zone. I’mexcited to explore the possibilities ofmy role and think the STEM theme ofthe challenge will help me achievemy Highers, offering new perspectivesand knowledge on the parts ofschool that genuinely interests me.

Our team are inspired. We find inspiration and encouragement in feats ofengineering all around us. Our dark green colour was inspired by the British Racing Greenseen in the early days of British racing, we like to think it is a testament to how far we’ve cometechnologically. The name ‘Eagles’ stems from our previous attempt when we entered as theBlue Eagles and we hope that the name and our success, is carried into the new team. The logoitself is inspired by an eagles wing, in the negative space the outline of our car can be seen. Thisis interesting as it shows the incorporation of our cars fundamental design into our logo and intoall aspects of our marketing.

I can’t wait to return to F1 in Schools formy second time, I really feel that I’velearnt skills that have helped me in life aswell as exams. I think I've become moreorganised and confident and this time Ihope I can lead the team to success bykeeping them on track and we learningfrom all of our previous experiences.

Eagles RacingThe CompetitionF1 in schools is an international STEM basedcompetition. We need to design andmanufacture a small F1 car, design a pitdisplay, create a verbal presentation andtwo folios.

The competition is open for 9-19 year oldswho can enter in either of the threeclasses:Entry, Development, andProfessional.

We are entering as a Professional class.

The F1 in Schools Technology Challenge is aworldwide programme involving over 20million pupils worldwide. The internationalinitiative is aimed at engaging andchallenging high school students as well asintroducing them to the possibilities ofcareers in Engineering, Science, Marketingand Project Management. The internationalcompetition requires teams of 3-6 membersto Design, Manufacture, Test, Race andMarket a small Formula One style car. It ispropelled down a 20 metre track poweredby the jet from a C02 canister. The averagecar will complete the race in just over onesecond, reaching speeds topping 40mph. Atotal of 900 possible points areawardedacross a variety of stationary and dynamicevents.

Below is a basic rundown on how we arejudged in the competition.

Eagles RacingInnovation

The WingsOur wings are be printed by externalcompanies in an effort to create as high aresolution and thus smooth a surface aspossible. The implementation of 3D printedwings allows for them to be interchangeableallowing for different tests to be carried out, forexample wind tunnel testing and if anybreakages were to happen on the race daythey can be easily replaced.

The Rear Wing

The rear wing is secured using a double dowel techniquewhich is a call back to the previous iteration of our team. The method was used to hold the front wing in place butwe took a risk testing this method on such a small scale. Thewings which were professionally printed are made from apioneering and new technique called SLA. This means theresolution is as high as possible leading to a lower surfacedrag coefficient. Our wings don’t produce down force asthe street racing setup makes the extra drag redundant.

The WheelsOur wheels are professionally SLA printed but we discussedother options like machined aluminium. This is a light metalthat’s easy to machine and would keep our weight closeto the track, avoiding lift. Unfortunately we didn’t opt forthese due to worries over weight.

Our wheels also include a double bearing which wasrecommended from a professional class team last year. Thishelps to reduce the combined drag coefficient. Thesewere donated by our sponsord D.I.K Bearings and Angus3D Solutions.

Our car is cut out of a foam block by a CNC machine, which is basically areciprocating drill bit, has to be designed on CAD Software first. These are some earlyrenders. The car is heavily inspired by those seen in the current season of F1 and ourdesign engineer prides himself in the technical aspects. There have been over 150individual iterations of the car because we know that the greatest innovation is purifiedover time. Every model of the car is tested in a wind tunnel simulation software and thisgives us an idea of speed and how to reduce the all important drag coefficient.

Organisation

In the regional run up we were looking for material sponsorship butthis focus lead us to gaining no financial input. This time we wouldlike to highlight to sponsors the representation on a national levelthis is a chance for your company to be viewed as supporting stemeducation in school. Our commitment to fundraising coveredtransport costs for the regional competition but will struggle to coverthe overnight costs and bus costs for the national competition sowe would like to emphasise the need for financial sponsors. Wewould like to show appreciation or settle any doubts by coming toyour offices to give a presentation and hear your thoughts on thecontent we’ve created so far and present our plans and ideas toyou.

Our current estimates for the finals budget is around £2250 and allhelp towards this would be very much appreciated.

Budgets

One of the biggest lessons that we’ve learnt from our previousexperiences and regionals is that time management is the key tooptimum performance. Our team leader has created a gantt chartwhich at first we struggled to keep to but is now adhered to,enforced through our regular Monday meetings where we discussour aims for the week and any problems. The gantt chart has sixtydifferent areas to be addressed and is expected to grow but webelieve if we stick to it we will be ready for nationals with time tospare.

Spending

We plan to welcome all sponsors to a talk at our school and we arewilling to visit your offices if you want to settle any doubts overinvestment. We would want to have your professional input over allaspects of the competition and would like to see our interactionbetween our community and yours last. The specific benefits ofsponsorship are highlighted on the previous page but includecompany promotion over social media and web sites as well asbeing seen to represent Scotland nationally among a group of theUK’s finest engineers and future engineering hope at the only STEMcompetition of this scale in the UK. We also continue to give theopportunity of becoming a title sponsor to those that would beinterested.

Return on Investment

These upper estimates account for any overspending but are basedoff of the last years nationals team. We have a defined idea of whatwe want from ourselves at nationals. Our experience of seeing thecompetition as development class and our teachers experience ofattending nationals for the last 3 years will guide us well as we knowthe standard we need to bring ourselves to. Most teams raiseupwards of £1500 but we have to factor in travel andaccommodation. We wish to have presentation aspects likebackboards and uniform professionally printed, this will enhance ourappearance making it look flush and professional but this also drivesup cost. This means we would like to emphasise that materialsponsorship is also requested and it is likely if we have contactedyour business you would be able to help us in some way.

Item Upper cost

Transport £1100

Accomodation and trip utilities £850

Pit Display £100

Teamwear £50

Manufacturing materials £70

Finishing materials £95

Total £2265

Despite a struggle to gain sponsorshipregarding presentation and uniform wemanufactured the designs in our school. Wehad success on the day being awarded theprize for the best verbal presentation andcoming second in Scotland over all judgingcategories. We would like to highlight ourevaluation and tell our sponsors about thesteps we know we need to take to improve.

Success at Regionals

Project EvaluationOur strengths in this stage of the competition include

-Gaining sponsorship of bearings, where we excelled in gaining many allowing us tocompare friction and make multiple designs based around them.

-Our verbal presentation actually received an award showing our view of basing thesubject around the outlines in the competition marking guide was the most effectiveway to gain all the marks and we’ve applied the strategy of basing design of all aspectsaround the marking scheme across the board to all aspects of the competition.

-We were praised on our folios with judges approaching us after the competition hadended to congratulate us on our performance and aimed technique.

-We were proud of our pit display but we realised there would’ve been a higher impactif it was professionally made.

-Many races eroded our car and we would be looking to run more physical tests this timeto stimulate the intense race day we will experience.

-We were aware of the areas the needed improvement at regionals and we hope thatthis awareness will stay with us to help us improve throughout our competition.

Sponsorship runs from the time of agreement to the conclusion of the National Finals(13th of March), where, hopefully, a new agreement can be reached for future sponsorship.

If an agreement is not met following the regional finals for an extension in Sponsorship then legacy sponsorswill still be acknowledged in future enterprise folios.

The eaglesracing.co.uk website will have desired company advertisements.

We are interested in a wide array of services, if you are willing to provide a service please tell us of yourservice (at “[email protected]”) and we will come to an agreement regarding your sponsorshiplevel.

We would be very interested in meeting with any potential sponsors in the Dundee/ east of Scotland area, this would be a great opportunity to learn from sponsors and could lead to great marketing opportunities.
