DESIGN AWARD CATEGORIES

ENTRY FEE

Current AIA Birmingham Members: Submitters must be licensed or associate architects. Projects must have been completed before January 1, 2015 and executed anywhere in the U.S. or abroad. Unbuilt projects are welcome.

Non-AIA Birmingham Members: Submitters must be a licensed architect in the state of Alabama and the project must be in the state of Alabama completed after January 1st, 2015. Unbuilt projects are welcome!

Each entry will include a social media blast. Each winning project power point will scroll on the AIA Birmingham website home page for one year. Project boards will be exhibited in public spaces and at the Alabama Center for Architecture (ACFA).

BONUS: Winning projects will be exhibited at the ACFA Awards Ceremony featuring Michael Murphy, M.A.S.S. July 21st at Region’s Park.

ANOTHER BONUS: Honor Award winning residential projects will serve as the AIA Birmingham advertisement in one issue of Birmingham Home & Garden magazine.

HONOR AWARD The Honor Award is the Jury’s highest commendation for projects that exceed a standard of design excellence.

MERIT AWARD The Merit Award is the Jury’s commendation for projects that adhere to a standard of design excellence.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE Public online voting. Projects will be available for viewing on AIA Birmingham’s social media platforms.

NON-RESIDENTIAL Institutional, Commercial, Adaptive Reuse, Historic Preservation, Unbuilt, Design Detail, and Multifamily Projects built after January 1, 2015

RESIDENTIAL Residential Projects built After January 1, 2015

Current AIA Birmingham Members: The first submission is $200, and each additional submission is $150 each. One complimentary ticket to the awards event will be provided for the submitting firm.

Non- AIA Birmingham Members: All submission for non-members are $400 each. One complimentary ticket to the awards event will be provided for the submitting firm.

ENTRY FEE + FORM DUE MARCH 5TH, 2020

Return completed entry form(s) and all associated entry fees to the AIA Birmingham offices. Fill out [1] entry form per project. Only [1] check is required for the total fee. The first project entry is $200.00. All entry forms and fees must be received by 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 5th. No late entries will be accepted.

POWER POINT DUE MARCH 26TH, 2020

After receipt of your entry form and fee, AIA Birmingham will provide an entry identification number for each submitted project and a PowerPoint template outlining the project entry format. A maximum of [12] slides will be accepted per entry: [1] Project Identification Slide. Any additional slides will be removed starting from the end of the presentation, excluding the project identification slide, until the presentation is within the 12-slide maximum. Use the entry number for the file name (e.g. R-001.ppt). The PowerPoint presentation will be used by the jury to evaluate each project.*

PRESENTATION NARRATIVE

As part of your Powerpoint presentation, tell the Jury the story of your project. A design entry should include the process, problem solving and design thinking. Start at the beginning and walk them through the project, make them want to work, live or experience your project. What was the design challenge? How did you solve it in a unique and artful way? The jury would like to see people in the representation of your projects. Be sure the narrative and the photos chosen tell the same story within your Powerpoint. JURY PHOTOGRAPH DUE MARCH 26TH, 2020

Provide [1] high resolution, digital photograph that best represents each project. The photo should be no larger than 3MB in JPG or PNG format. Use the entry number for the file name (e.g. R-001.jpg).* In addition to the PowerPoint, this photo will be used by the jury to evaluate each project.

PowerPoint and Jury Photograph must be submitted via USB drive to the AIA Birmingham Offices by 5:00pm on Thursday, March 26th.

PROJECT DISPLAY BOARD DUE JUNE 18TH, 2020

Each project submitted must also include a project display board for marketing and for exhibition at the Design Awards Ceremony. The board needs to be 20” wide by 30” tall mounted on foam core. List the architecture firm, project title, owner, consultants and must include a brief description about the project.

Project Display Board must be delivered to the AIA Birmingham Office by 5:00pm on Thursday, June 18th.*

*Do not modify the size,weight, or style oftypeface in the slides.Compress all PowerPointpresentations to nolarger than 150 ppi.

*NOTE: The board will not beused by the jury to evaluatethe project.
