    ABSTRACT

The aim of t h i s pro jec t i s to design a gearbox fo r thet ransmiss ion of power from a motor to a compressor. Thewhole conten t of the pro jec t i s divided in to 8 chapters .The f i r s t 3 chapters deal with gear ca lcu la t ions . Twomethods a re employed fo r ca lcula t ing the gear dimensionsthe Lewis and Hertz method and the recommended procedure byBS 436.

The next chapter (Chapter 4) deals with the design of thesha f t s where the gears are secured.Chapter 5 deals with the design of the bearings whileChapter 6 conta ins the se lec t ion of the var ious equipmentto be employed in the system.

Chapter 7 deals with the design of the cas ing, includingthe suggested overa l l gearbox dimensions.

The l a s t chapter deals with the cos t of the gearbox, including the individual cos t of each pa r t of it.
