This project involved designing a library in the Tenley Town area of DC amongst all of the tall radio tower structures. The concept I developed was one that contradicted the norm. I decided to design the library as a tower. Therefore, the higher the floor in the library,

the more delicate or sacred the information became.The building was then designed to rotate and frame views around

the city toward the tallest structures in DC:

For the Exterior the material would be a reddish orange metal material that would allow the shelves to be framed on the exterior.

The large openings in the facade are the small viewing cubbies that were created to gain views to the Monument and other surrounding structures.

The stair tower became the primary element. It is wrapped in a yellow stained glass and will become a light tower feature at night.

STAIR TOWER

Lighted with a solar panel that is placed on the top of the stair with a slanted plane facing south.

Made primarily of glass with colored lights and a colored stair element.

HIGHEST ROOF

The top roof acts as a looking terrace which responds to the various vertical elements around the site.

The roof is accessible by all residents and will be a place for communal events.

STEPPING PLATFORMS

Green roofs are placed sporadically throughout the building because of the alternating unit heights.

BUILDING MATERIAL

The glass is an artistic glass that is tinted with different artwork pieces for each unit. Main materials include glass, brick and metal.

CORNER STORES

Single story retail units are placed at the corners of the central units. These can be rented for small businesses from residents.

This project was primarily a research project for an urban design study in LeDroit Park. We conducted a

survey of the area and developed ideas for a residential area in the site outlined above.

We were instructed to design a 425 sqft. unit which became the basic module for the project. I

developed my project into buildings made up of 6 units per floor that alternated in height. This gave the

site an oscillating appearance. Some units were turned into stores to create a central communal area.

COMMUNITY HOUSING

A historical DC neighborhood, in which many African Americans reside. Ledroit park has a lot of historical culture that can be applied to the design of the new residential neighborhood.

Although it is located in the city, Ledroit park has maintained the character of a quiet neighborhood. The area is considered to be relatively affordable compared to the rest of the DC area.

Howard University is located within close proximity to the Ledroit park neighborhood. The university adds to the density of the historical culture within the area. Here, howard has been embedded into the DC neighborhood.

The housing in the neighborhood was originally designed by the architect James McGill. There are 50 original structures remaining in the Country House style and Gothic style. Amzi L. Barber was a founder of Howard University and a developed of the Ledroit park neighborhood.

The location of a university dormitory. Location of a lot of student activity and gathering.

Oak road was historically a neighborhood cul-de-sac. However, the street has direct access to the current site and will therefore be used for contextual studies.

To the north of the studied site, there is a public housing complex. Unfortunately, this area can be a rather unsafe place. The security issue spills out onto the site and into Ledroit park as well. These housing units have intertwined outdoor spaces which the residents use for social gathering. These residents have complete visibility onto the site.

COMMON GOOD CITY FARM

A major possibility for city production of vegetables and fruits. A good encouragement and attraction for area. Right now the farm allows near by residents to rent plots for growing plants and food.

TREE BUFFER

A visual buffer will be necessary on the East end of the site. The backs of abandoned buildings sits on this property. The separation is for visual and secure aesthetic.

This project was a third year group project to redo a community center located in Boston Massachusetts.

After studying the site and the contextual history we discovered a design solution that had relation to the surrounding environment and the soul of the community itself.

We added a green wall building which represented the sustainable aspect of the building and housed areas such as green houses and classrooms. The central brick structure had relevance to the already existing structure, however we added a curtain wall for modernization. The third structure was comprised of a wooden facade which also had relevance to the sustainable nature of the center.

I designed a ramp that wrapped the perimeter allowing your book selection process to become a continual journey.
