Residential Building 2016
Course aims:
To set up a structural engineering design project in which students are required to integrate the
fundamental basic components of engineering design (concept, modelling/ analysis and detaileddesign) that have been gained in other areas of the programme.
Objectives:
Conceptual design, optimisation and synthesis.
Engineering modelling and analysis.
Communication of design solution. Method statement.
Detailing and Hand out report.
Project Description:
The project is a residential multi – storey building of 16 storeys (Height = 53 m) containing one
basement for services and 15 similar floor in which each floor is including 6 apartments (Figure 1).

1. Conceptual Design:
In the conceptual phase of structural design, a designer develops and investigates many potential
alternatives for safe and economic transfer of loads that are to be carried by structure. A
methodology for automating conceptual structural design and an application of the methodology to aspecific problem are requested in this part of this project where sketches of general solution is
required in which it covers the initial dimensions of the elements of the designer’s selected system.
(Table 1) shows span to depth ratios as for governed beam depth and slab thicknesses.

2. Actual Design:
In the Actual phase of structural design, a designer checks the certainty of the selected conceptualdesign of the structure by following principles and basic fundamental methods of design in which it
produces the following phases:
- Slab structural study and detailing. (Two types of slabs will be required for both Basement andTop Floor).
- Beam detailing. (one beam each member of the group)- Column detailing according due each floor. (one column each member of the group)
3. Earthquake and wind Design:
Buildings are subjected to two types of loads:-
Vertical loads to gravity.
- Lateral load due to earthquake and wind.The lateral load resisting elements may be visualised and consisted of the following (Figure 2,3):

Vertical Elements: Moment- Resisting Frames.
Walls (Bearing/shear/Structural).
Gravity Frame and Walls.
Dual system (Frame and Walls).
Vertical truss.
Tube System.
Bundled- tube system.
- Horizontal Elements for floor/Diaphragm.
- Foundation.

4. Foundation and retaining wall:
