INTRODUCTION: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE: (noun) the art and practice of designing the outdoor environment.

Through the “My Career. My Life.” program, the Design Team internship introduced twelve Carbondale Middle School 6th grade students to the field of landscape architecture through a 7 week course. YouthEntity and DHM Design collaborated to teach the students about landscape architecture and the design process through idea generation. The internship aimed to introduce students to the field, think critically about how their outdoor environment is intentionally designed, understand the tasks and responsibilities of the profession, and employ their creativity and imagination.

YouthEntity engages and empowers youth to discover their potential by providing real-world learning experiences that prepare them for future success.

Established in 1975, DHM Design is an internationally recognized leader in landscape architecture, land planning, urban design and ecological planning.

Delia Bolster, lead coach, studied landscape architecture at Cornell University. After graduation, she began practicing in Carbondale at DHM Design. She is passionate about community development, improving the public’s interactions with their outdoor environment, and challenging people to think critically about their landscape and design.

“MY CAREER. MY LIFE.” “My Career. My Life.” is a program designed to guide middle school students in the direction of careers that are most suited for them. Students take a short assessment about their likes and dislikes and learn their “My Career. My Life.” career code made up of their top three Holland Codes: Artistic, Investigative, Enterprising, Realistic, Conventional or Social. By learning which three career codes best fit their personalities, students begin to understand what careers they may enjoy the most. With their career code in hand, they attend a Career Expo at their school to learn about the variety of internships available to them and select their internship. The program matches students with professionals in their desired fields of interest, providing social capital for their future success.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Since the 1940’s, cars have had an growing influence in how we design and interact with our outdoor environment. With an increasing dependence on the automobile as our primary mode of transportation, more and more space in our landscape is allocated to the car: parking lots, driveways, highways, parking garages, etc. Recently people have begun to think about how these spaces could be redesigned to function for multiple users: pedestrians, bikers, rail cars, flora, fauna. In the design team internship, the students were encouraged to engage in this rethinking of our outdoor environment by redesigning one to three parking spaces into a mini-park of their imagination. Through the 7 week internship, students learned how to apply the design process to create a design for a mini-park that they could convey and present to their peers and critics. The ideas generated by the students will be incorporated into DHM’s final design for parking day, a global event in which citizens transform a parking space into a public place. DHM’s 2015 Parking Day design pictured above and below.
