Design Trends for 2015

Page 2: Design Trends 2015

The introduction of iOS 7 in late 2013, and later Google’s ‘Material

Design’ have had a large influence this year.

Additionally, the expanding number of screen sizes in the market

from smartwatches and other connected devices have

contributed.

Therefore, the aesthetic and functional influencers from this year

will continue across to 2015:

• Evolution of flat design

• Card design

• Evolution of Responsive design

• Greater use of fluidity and movement

Flat design will continue to grow next year, but there will be a

limit to its minimalism.

It will develop around functional requirements, e.g. Google’s

Material Design, using:

• Shape

• Colour

• Shadows

Google announced their ‘Material Design’ language back in

July 2014, but the Android software did not launch until

November. Therefore expect to see Android app designers

follow suit by updating their apps to the new language.

Material Design uses visual cards to display information. The

cards allow the user to view bite-sized pieces of information

quickly, that they can easily act upon.

Wearable technology is an industry set to take off in the next

few years with Apple entering the market with their ‘Apple

Watch’, which will be released in the first quarter of next year.

With their market influence, they will place wearable

technology on the map and there will begin to be a mass

adoption.

Responsive web design is set to evolve

with the mass-introduction and adoption

of wearable devices, and we will expect to see the first

smartwatch optimised websites in the first half of 2015.

GIFs

Push to move beyond the ‘static’

webpage, with subtle use of GIFs in

the place of normal images e.g. in

blog posts to create depth and

movement.

Video

Developed use of video in hero

panels, and feature panels to

promote messages, and to engage

users with the promoted message.

Future

Video and animation will continue to

be used on desktop, but may still be

a challenge on mobile web browsers,

as GIFs or videos do not auto play.
