Final Project

The main concept is - Continuous Steps forms tunneled spaces by constant ascension and dissension.

Final Script:

For the first design approach I wanted to explore continuous tunneling by analyzing the original side faade of the townhouse. This was done by a series of analytical drawings and abstract synthetic drawings which allowed me to find new shapes and forms to create a new side faade. The second design approach stemmed out of analyzing a body in motion. The body would ascend and descend in the two types of activities. This motion allowed me to design a ground plane that would ascend and descend throughout the space and create a stepped form throughout by folding itself in different directions. The way the two approaches hybridize involves the extension of the ground plane (or landscape as I like to call it) throughout the entire building connecting the tunneled spaces, thus forming a stepped continuous space. These Spaces adhere to my program where one occupant is a soccer player and the other a photographer. The soccer player and photographer share one space which is the main living space on the first floor where the soccer player who is a more social character socializes with his friends, whereas the photographer who likes to be alone just cooks his dinner in the same space. These spaces stretch from one side of the townhouse to the other side because they are tunneling. This is the most public space in the building. The other spaces are dedicated to the occupants based on their other activities, such as exercise and resting for the soccer player and photography and rest for the photographer. The interaction of the two occur only in the living space. However they both occupy that space at the same time of the day. The building also uses this stepping concept in its faade design thus making it respond to privacy and light.

WRITING ASSIGNMENTS 1.

MOTION:

The motion started off casually but ended spontaneously. The body walked towards a chair near a table. The body then climbs up the chair and then onto the table, walks a couple of steps and then jumps off the table. The speed was gradual and constant and the motion lasted about 5 7 seconds long. Thus the main intent of the motion was to goABOVEthe table. Thus the table was the architectural space worked with.

COUNTER MOTION:

The counter motion started quickly and ended quickly. The body is running and then slides beneath the table to reach the other side. The speed was at first slow (in comparison to the body in motion) and picked up when the body began to slide. The intent was to goBENEATHthe table.

Many abstract and analytical drawings were made on these two motions studying many different aspects of it.

COUNTER MOTIONADVERBS: Rapidly, dangerouslyVERBS:Sliding, slipping, landing, stretching, expanding, skidding, and fittingThe Axonometric drawing was made with the help of two drawings; One being the original plan of the townhouse, and the other being the abstract drawing designed in Exercise 1. The abstract drawing was used as the front faade of the axonometric drawing whereas the plan remained as the plan. Both drawings were extruded in a three dimensional space which gave rise to intersections between the two drawings. The extrusion distances were based on the interior horizontal walls shown in the original plan.

Layers were drawn on top of this axonometric drawing. The drawings were abstract and allowed opportunity to look for regular and irregular shapes which could lead to future intervention.

Layer 1 Extension of wall lines to which objects were extruded till.Layer 2 Extension of lines of the points of entry or interpreted openings.Layer 3 Finding points of intersection of lines drawn in layer 1 and layer 2 to find new shapes.

I.

SITE - Enclosed, long, flat, open, narrow

CONTEXT - circulative, educational, tight, continuous, private

PROGRAM quick, changing, alternating, tightly, consistent

SPATIAL QUALITIES open, tight, continuous, flowing, ascending

DESIGN APPROACH consistently flowing, continuously ascending, quickly changing, tightly sliding, constantly distorting

II.

SITE & CONTEXT The site is flat, with a narrow but open space in an educational environment.

PROGRAM & SPATIAL QUALITIES The body travels through an open, but tight space with a quick and alternating movement.

DESIGN & FORMAL OPERATIONS The design is to create a space that is continuous, ascending and circulative to allow quick and alternating movements through the space.

LIGHT Entry of light through window into corridor, illuminating only part of the end of the corridor creating no shadows. Entry of light from large windows into the room, forming shadows on the walls because of the interior furniture.CIRCULATION DIAGRAM MIDTERM BOARD
