Introducing DesignBuild

The research project‚ European DesignBuild Knowledge Network (EDBKN), funded by the European Union, promotes the implementation, spread and sustainability of the aca-demic DesignBuild methodology. It was initiated by CoCoon -contexual con-struction- that has been undertaking DesignBuild projects since 2004, and the Habitat Unit at the TU Berlin. DesignBuild projects are components of higher education in the field of the built environment that allow students to be physically involved in the materialization of their designs. Despite the fact that DesignBuild Studios show an exemplary way to combine the synergistic poten-tials of teaching, research, practice and development projects, they remain a young and changing field that is far from being exhausted. The EDBKN aims at fostering multinational, interdisciplinary cooperation and promoting DesignBuild research. In order to achieve that, the interactive dbXchange web-platform (www.dbxchange.eu) is being devel-oped to be EDBKN’s effective tool. Malaab El Kobri served as a pilot project to be developed and monitored on the web-platform.

التعريف بالتصميم والبناء

المشروع البحثي، الشبكة األوروبية المعرفية للتصميم والبناء )EDBKN( ، يشجع على

تنفيذ، نشر، واستدامة المنهجية األكاديمية للتصميم والبناء. وقد تم إطلق المشروع

عبر CoCoon - البناء السياقي في الجامعة التكنولوجية في برلين - الذين إبتدوا بتنفيذ

مشاريع التصميم والبناء منذ عام ٤..٢، و دائرة العمران والتصميم العالمي في الجامعة.

مشاريع التصميم والبناء األكاديمية هي مكونات التعليم العالي في مجال البنيان

والهندسة المعمارية التي تتيح للطلب أن يشاركوا فعليا في تجسيد مخططاتهم.

على الرغم من أن ستديوهات التصميم والبناء تظهر نموذج تماثلي للجمع بين اإلمكانات

المتآزرة للتعليم والبحث والتطبيق والتعاون اإلنمائي، إال أنها تظل حقل يافع ومتغير

وبعيد كل البعد من أن يستنفذ.الشبكة األوروبية المعرفية للتصميم والبناء

تهدف إلى تعزيز التعاون بين التخصصات والدول المتعددة وإلى تشجيع البحوث في

مجال التصميم والبناء هذا. من أجل الوصول إلى هذا الهدف، يتم اآلن تطوير شبكة

It all started with the participation of baladilab at CoCoon’s international symposium at the TU Berlin in 2012 on the DesignBuild as an educational format for architecture students.Baladilab from the GUC presented then their Learn-Move-Play-Ground projects (activating playgrounds in public schools in Cairo) and was chosen to lead the pilot project of the EDBKN. A DesignBuild studio in Cairo was launched to review and record the steps, needs, phases, etc. which could occur in a “standard” DesignBuild studio. The project on Dahab Island was to become the base and reference for future projects. Having left Cairo in 2013, baladilab handed the project over to their colleagues Carla Schwarz, Leonie Weber (both involved in the previous LMPGs) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cornelia Redeker, who introduced Dahab Island, the current case study of the Nile Island Initiative (Nil), as a potential site with a community looking to build a football field. Familiar with the people, local conditions and challenges of the site, this unique location was chosen for the project.

كان التواصل األساسي قد بدأ عبر تلبية بلدي الب )baladilab( من الجامعة األلمانية في

القاهرة دعوة المشاركة في مؤتمر دولي نظمه فريق CoCoon في الجامعة التكنولوجية في

برلين عام ٢.١٢ لطرح فكرة التصميم والبناء كشكل تعليمي لطلب الهندسة المعمارية.

عرض فريق baladilab مشروعهم »تعلم-تحرك-إلعب« )تفعيل الملعب في المدارس

العامة في القاهرة( وتم اختيارهم لقيادة المشروع الرائد التجريبي للشبكة األوروبية

.)EDBKN( المعرفية للتصميم والبناءنظم ستوديو التصميم والبناء في القاهرة

لعرض وتسجيل الخطوات واالحتياجات والمراحل التي يمكن أن تحدث في ستديو التصميم والبناء النموذجي. وكان مشروع

جزيرة الذهب ليصبح قاعدة ومرجعية للمشاريع المستقبلية.

بعد مغادرة القاهرة في عام ٢٠١٣، سلم فريق baladilab المشروع لزملئهم كارال شفارتس

وليوني فيبر )اللتين قد شاركتا في مشاريع »تعلم- تحرك-إلعب« سابقا( والدكتورة كورنيليا

ريديكر، أستاذة جامعية في التخطيط المدني. كانت الدكتورة ريديكر قد قامت بأبحاث

أسسية حول جزيرة الذهب ضمن مشاريع جامعية سابقة تحت إطار مبادرة جزر النيل

)Nil(، وبالتالي كانت على معرفة بسكان الجزيرة وكانت طليعة بالظروف المحلية و تحديات الموقع. وفقا لذلك قرر باإلجماع على هذا

الموقع الفريد من نوعه.

Cairo‘s Nile Islands

The Nile Island Initiative (Nil) is a spin-off project in association with the GUC Architecture and Urban Design Program. “Nil” is a multidisciplinary platform initiated to map, protect and activate the spatial qualities of Nile Islands in the context of increasing urbanization. The strategic aims include environmental protection and urban upgrading regarding informal building activities, water supply and treatment, solid waste management, empower-ment and awareness building of the local community and habitat protection. There are an estimated 144 islands in the Egyptian Nile of which many are threatened by encroachment and environmental degradation. At the same time their legal status is unclear. Dahab Island in the middle of Cairo, an agricultural, car-free island of 300 hectares with an estimated 20,000 inhabitants is currently the main case study for “Nil” activities. Accordingly, Malaab El Kobri was realized as a strategic design project aiming to test socio-spatial and institutional conditions for future interventions to respond to the pressing environmental urgencies.

لمسح أراضي الجزر ووضعها على خرائط باإلضافة لحماية وتفعيل الصفات المكانية

في جزر النيل في سياق توسع المدن وزيادة التحضر. األهداف االستراتيجية لمبادرة جزر النيل

هي حماية البيئة ورفع المستوى المعيشي للمناطق المدنية فيما يتعلق بأنشطة بناء

رسمية، وإمدادات المياه النظيفة، ومعالجة وإدارة النفايات الصلبة، وتمكين وتوعية

المجتمع المحلي على هذه األمور وتأثيراتها على البيئة وأهمية حماية الموائل الطبيعية.

هناك ما يقدر ب ١٤٤ جزيرة في النيل المصري، العديد منها مهدد بسبب التعديات على قوانين

الحماية البيئية. في الوقت حينه يبقى وضعها القانوني غير واضح.

جزيرة الذهب، في وسط القاهرة، هي جزيرة زراعية خالية من السيارات، تبلغ حوالي ..٣

هكتار وتأوي ما يقدر بنحو ... .٢ نسمة وهي حاليا موقع الدراسة األساسي ألنشطة Nil. في هذا السياق، تم تحقيق مشروع ملعب الكوبري

بالتعاون مع العديد من الشركاء المحليين والدوليين كمشروع تصميم استراتيجي يختبر أرض الواقع من الناحية االجتماعية - المكانية والمؤسسية من أجل تدخلت مستقبلية للرد

على المتطلبات البيئية الملحة للجزيرة.

Project Site on Dahab Island

Introducing Dahab Island

Within the noise of the megalopolis Cairo we find Dahab Island. Although highly populated, the island remains a green haven that seems to have fallen out of time. Inhabited by a very hetero-geneous population of Muslims and Copts, the predominant lifestyle remains rural. Water buffaloes grazing along the shores of the Nile, birds, donkeys, chicken and goats, remnant mud brick barns and agricultural fields are existing next to a growing urban fabric of concrete structures and red brick as well as private villas with extensive gardens. With ‘Malaab El Kobri’ beneath the ring-road bridge in Cairo, students are creating a community platform to activate the underutilized space as an alternative to building missing commu-nity facilities on the scarce agricultural land. To adhere to local building regulations, the project is realized as a light-weight table construction to avoid concrete foundations in the vicinity of the Nile. Established as a playground for the children of the island and a space for festivities and gatherings, the community platform is conceptualized as an add-on project to expand with the next generation of students.

بوسط ضجيج مدينة القاهرة الضخمة نجد جزيرة الذهب. على الرغم من أنها ذات كثافة

سكانية عالية، تبقى الجزيرة ملذا أخضرا، وكأن الوقت توقف عندها للحفاظ على ثرواتها الخضراء. يأتي سكان الجزيرة من خلفيات

متعددة من المسلمين واألقباط، وال يزال نمط الحياة السائد فيها ريفي الطبع. جواميس الماء

والطيور ترعي على طول شواطئ النيل، في حين ترى الدواجن، والماعز والبقر حول حظائر ال

زالت من طوب اللبن وحقول زراعية موجودة بجوار النسيج العمراني المتزايد من الهياكل

الخرسانية والطوب األحمر. كذلك بدأت الفيلت الخاصة مع الحدائق الواسعة تتكاثر

على أطراف الجزيرة.عبر إنشاء ملعب الكوبري تحت جسر الدائري في القاهرة، خلق الطلب منصة للمجتمع لتفعيل الفضاء المهمل الغير مستغل لبناء منافع مرغوب بها تحت الجسر؛ كونه بديل

للبناء على األراضي الزراعية الشحيحة.لإللتزام بأنظمة البناء المحلية، يتحقق هذا

المشروع بطريقة البناء الخفيف الوزن لتجنب أساسات عميقة من الخرسانة في الفسحة

المجاورة لنهر النيل. لقد أنشئ المشروع كملعب ألطفال الجزيرة، ومساحة للحتفاالت

والتجمعات. ويتم تصور المنصة كمشروع أولي يتيح المجال للتوسع مع الجيل القادم من

الطلب.

كان استديو التصميم في الفصل الدراسي السابع في الجامعة األلمانية مفتوح

للمتقدمين الدوليين من الجامعات الشريكة في اراسموس موندوس وغيرها.

وقد شكل الفريق النهائي 24 طالب من مصر و أربع طلب من ألمانيا، فيما بينهم

طالب متمرن في البناء المهني وآخر في التخطيط التصميمي.

باإلضافة إلى الدعم الواسع من الشركاء الدوليين، إنضم فيكتور ماشكه، وهو نجار

مخترف من برلين، إلى الفريق كمشرف لعملية البناء.

The GUC 7th semester design studio was open for international applicants from the Erasmus Mundus partner universities and others to apply. 24 Egyptian and four German archi-tecture students, including one trained mason and one design draftsman, made up the final team. Beyond extensive support from the international partners, Viktor Maschke, a professional carpenter from Berlin, joined the team as building supervisor.

Project Fundingتمويل المشروع

Before the studio started, the team launched a fundraising campaign to emphasize on local support. This quest was challenged by the uncommon non-profit concept and the coinciding timing with Ramadan. An alternative plan was put forward for a fundraising team of students to continue with the endeavor in the design phase.

المحلي. قابلت هذه المحاولة تحديات كثيرة، منها

عدم إعتياد الناس على مفهوم النشاطات الغير ربحية وتزامن قسم كبير من الحملة مع

شهر رمضان. تم وضع خطة بديلة عبر تشكيل لجنة طلبية

تسعى لمواصلة جمع التبرعات خلل مرحلة التصميم.

DBS Cairo - Malaab El Kobri – Dahab Island Evaluation of the project regarding fire protection 0. Site visit This recommendation is based on a site visit on May 16, 2015 by Assoc. Prof. Thomas Loeffler, Building Construction, German University Cairo Prof. Emeritus Dr.-Ing. Hanno Ertel, Building Physics, University of Stuttgart Prof. Jürgen Schreiber, Building Technology, University of Stuttgart 1. Location of the project The project is located beneath the Ringroad Bridge on Dahab Island, Cairo. The bridge is a massive concrete structure. There are no flammable elements on the underside of the bridge. The road of the bridge is at a height distance of about 15 meters from the built project structure. The distance to the massive concrete bridge pillars ( an estimated 8 x 1.5 x 15 meters) is about 2 meters. The built structure does not touch the bridge in any place. Surrounding buildings are more than 100 meters away. The deck structure is erected in the direct vicinity of the Nile with a distance of about 50 meters. 2. Material and construction of the project The project is a wooden deck with shelves built as a light-weight wood construction without any special built fire protection. It consists of three elements: the wooden platform (height about 20 cm) with a diverse number of seating elements (average height 0.4 m), two shelf elements (height about 3 meters) and a counter with a height of 1 meter. The project has no enclosed spaces, but is open to all sides and has no roof structures, no stairs. 3. Use of the project seating landscape to watch football field, wait for ferry, meet 4. Estimation in case of a fire In case of a fire users can exit the structure without any obstacles to all sides. Therefore, no special escape routes are necessary. As the project is completely located outdoors smoke build-up is of no relevance. The distance to neighbouring buildings and to the bridge is sufficient. The bridge construction is so massive that heat build-up in case of fire will have no impact on the structure. In addition, there are no flammable objects located beneath the bridge. 5. Recommendation Both from a structural and a contextual point of view no necessary fire protection measures are necessary for this structure. In case of fire, a fire extinguisher is available on site. Additionally, water can be brought from the Nile directly via a pump or buckets. Cairo, 23 May 2015

Based on our oral agreement on November 2, 2014 and the permission given by GARBLT as the owner of the site (dated October 20, 2014), we kindly request your approval to build the Youth Community Facilities beneath the Ringroad Bridge on Dahab. The project is a charitable, non-profit, community-based project designed and built by students of the GUC Architecture and Urban Design Program and supported by AYB to ensure the sustainability and maintenance of the project. As an Erasmus Mundus project, it further serves as a case study for the European Design Build Network established by TU Berlin. The location and scale are indicated in the attached plan. The building process will commence Mid-December 2014. The multifunctional facilities are planned as temporary buildings realized as a light-weight construction that can easily be removed and include:

A sports field

Changing rooms

Sanitary facilities equipped with ecofriendly technologies

An open class room

A site manager space

The facilities aim to improve the living conditions of the community and ideally serve as a pilot project to introduce decentralized green infrastructure and raise ecological awareness among the inhabitants.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING The parties named below intend to form a partnership for the purpose of establishing a Community Youth Sports Facility beneath the Ringroad Bridge on Dahab Island, Cairo. The project will be realized as a case study in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Project: European Design Build Knowledge Network (www.edbkn.eu) scheduled for the period from September 2014 until the end of February 2015. Technische Universität Berlin EDBKN directed by Habitat Unit and CoCoon presented by Prof. Dr. Misselwitz and Ursula Hartig (further referred to as EDBKN) with its consortium-‐ partner in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus agreement 545778-‐EM-‐1-‐2013-‐1-‐DE-‐ERA Mundus-‐EMA3: German University Cairo Architecture and Urban Design Department represented by Dr. Cornelia Redeker, Assoc. Prof. (further referred to as GUC) and NGO Alasahnek Ya Baladi represented by Dr. Raghda El Ebrashi (further referred to as AYB) EDBKN (with its consortium-‐ partner GUC in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus agreement) responsibilities and obligations to this project:

• Acquire all necessary building permits • Secure funding for the realization of the building • Provide a design and constructional drawings • Implement the design build project with students • Support AYB in below mentioned tasks where possible

AYB responsibilities and obligations to this project:

• Community relationship building • Participatory assessment and planning activities with community members • Local community committees formulation and training • Community development organizations capacity building • Youth engagement and volunteering efforts and initiatives • Public space and community services management through the community members



Building Permitsتصاريح البناء

As a project realized by the GUC, one of the main pre-conditions was to build the project formally. In a city where the majority of buildings are built informally, this poses challenges. Given the extremely tight time frame, it was inevitable to avoid the need for a full building permit under Egyptian legisla-tion. Therefore the project was realized as an open, light-weight table construc-tion in wood. In this way concrete foundations in the vicinity of the Nile were avoided and the structure can be considered temporal. The NGO AYB joined the team to ensure the future management of the field. This project challenged the institutions as much as the teaching staff. Over the course of ten months permits were attained from: The Ministry of Transportation as the owner of the site, the Governorate of Giza as the responsible jurisdiction, and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation advised by the Nile Research Institute. The run for permissions dominated the designbuild studio to the extent of stopping the building process twice, the last time only a few days before the project was to be finalized.

كمشروع حققته الجامعة األلمانية في القاهرة، كان واحدا من الشروط الرئيسية إنشاء المشروع

بطريقة رسمية. في مدينة يطغي عليها البناء العشوائي والغير رسمي، هذا األمر يطرح تحديات كثيرة. نظرا لإلطار الزمني الضيق

للغاية، كان الحصول على تصريحات بناء كاملة بموجب القانون المصري أمر شبه مستحيل،

وبدأنا نبحث في حل بديل. ولذلك كان من البديهي تنفيذ مشروع مفتوح، خفيف الوزن

وسهل البناء والتركيب، مبني من الخشب. وبهذه الطريقة تم تجنب األساسات الخرسانية

في محيط نهر النيل ويمكن اعتبار المشروع هيكل مؤقت. .منظمة علشانك يا بلدي الغير

حكومية انضمت إلى الفريق لضمان اإلدارة المستقبلية للملعب.

شكل هذا المشروع تحديا كبيرا للمؤسسات الحكومية وهيئة التدريس التي الحقت

الموضوع باستمرار. على مدار عشرة أشهر استطاع منظمي المشروع الحصول على

تصاريح من: وزارة النقل و المواصلت كونها المالك الرسمي لألراضي الواقعة تحت الجسر، ومحافظة الجيزة كالسلطة القضائية المختصة،

ووزارة الموارد المائية والري بإشراف معهد بحوث النيل.

الصعوبات والملحقة المستمرة للحصول على التصاريح هيمنت على ستوديو التصميم والبناء

Community Presentationتقديم التصاميم ألهالي الجزيرة

Students interviewed women, men and children. Many ideas were incorporated in the presented designs. 1:50 models and visualizations were publicly presented to inhabitants to give their input, this time only men and kids came. In parallel AYB, the partnering NGO, conducted a survey regarding the future management of the field.

أجرى الطلب مقابلت مع النساء والرجال واألطفال.

أدرجت العديد من هذه األفكار في التصاميم المطروحة.

وعرضت نماذج وتصورات بمقاس ٥٠ :١ أمام أهالي الجزيرة إلعطاء مداخلتهم ، ولكن

هذه المرة حضر فقط الرجال واألطفال. في هذه األثناء، اجرت جمعية علشانك يا

بلدي، المنظمة الغير حكومية الشريكة، دراسة بشأن اإلدارة المستقبلية للمشروع.

Voting Challenges تحديات التصويت

Two of the seven designs were masterplan material while five provided individual aspects. Students from different teams aimed at joining the masterplans,but in vain. Another vote with lacking attendance resulted in a weak decision since each team member has one vote. Students pushed to reconsider and by common vote changed the design last minute.

شكلت مجموعة طلبية من أجل التشهير بالمشروع وجمع التبرعات لتمويله.

تركزت استراتيجيتهم على استخدام وسائل اإلعلم االجتماعية و تنشيط المشاركة.

وتنظيم النشاطات والحفلت باإلضافة إلى بيع البضائع المصممة للمشروع داخل وخارج

الحرم الجامعي. ومع ذلك، ورد الدعم المادي الرئيسي من

مؤسسات وشركات محلية ودولية باإلضافة لدعم خاص ضئيل.

The building site team was responsi-ble to prepare the construction site and to organize materials and tools A storage room for the tools, electrici-ty supply, and a bathroom were provid-ed by Ahmed Abou Aly’s family nearby The building site team gave a safety training including first aid measures. A waste separation and management system was organized due to the lack of such a system in place on the island

كان فريق موقع البناء مسؤول عن التحضير لعملية البناء وتنظيم المواد والمعدات.

وقد قدمت عائلة أحمد أبو علي غرفة قريبة لموقع البناء لتخزين األدوات، باإلضافة إلى

مصدر للكهرباء وحمام. وقدم فريق موقع البناء تدريب في مجال

السلمة بما في ذلك تدابير اإلسعافات األولية.وتم ترتيب نظام فصل النفايات وإدارتها نظرا

لعدم وجود نظاما مماثل في هذا الموقع على الجزيرة.

ما رأيته أول يوم هو أن الطلبة كانوا قلقين حول إستخدام الماكينات. بعضهم كانوا

يتمتعون بقليل من خبرة العمل بالخشب ولكن أغلبهم كانوا يعملون باألدوات للمرة

األولى. بعد ثلثة أيام لم يكن هناك مشاكل على اإلطلق و معظم الطلب قد تعلموا القيام بعمليات شديدة الصعوبة إلى حين

ذلك. باإلجمال كان نجاح جيد والعملية كانت مشوقة.

Nils Ruf - Architect and Carpenter On the first day, students were hesitant to use the tools. Some had previous experience with handling wood, but most of them did not. After three days of an intensive workshop, they were managing to take a jig saw and cut difficult angles easily. This is definitely a success and an interesting process.

Merging Designs دمج التصاميم

Instead of building rooms defined by walls, the main design element became an interactive hybrid wall that hosts functions from both sides while maintaining a sense of playfulness. Pressing time and budget issues made students reduce the design to its essence which also meant adding a more a playful atmosphere.

Construction Preparation التحضير للبناء

As our carpenter-in-charge Victor and the students studied the quality of scaffolding wood, it became clear that the idea to work with a recycled format was not feasible. This format is found on the market but only suitable for concrete molds. As a result, the need to build a light-weight construction and to use a renewable material that is easy to handle on an amateur building site let us stick to to wood.

بعدما درس الطلب باشراف النجار المسؤول عن ورشة البناء، فيكتور، مدى قدرة إستخدام خشب السقاالت المستعمل، إتضح أن فكرة العمل بمواد معاد تدويرها غير قابلة للتنفيذ بالظروف الموجودة. فحتى هذه يعاد بيعها

ولكن لغرض استخدامها للباطون. في النهاية بقي الخيار األنسب أن يستخدم خشب جديد أوال لضرورة تنفيذ بناء خفيف الوزن و ثانيا

نظرا للجودة العامة للخشب كونه مادة متجددة طبيعيا، وألن العمل بالخشب من قبل طلب

غير حرفيين أمر سهل التطوير.



Designing on Site التصميم على الموقع

Ideally Designbuilding is organized as a linear process of preparing, designing, planning and budgeting, and finally building a project. Instead it became a process where most of these phases ran in parallel to each other.With the delay of some design deci-sions, the execution planning had to continue on site. Changing building parameters led to many ad-hoc changes and adaptations.

ستديو التصميم والبناء المثالي منظم كعملية تسلسلية مؤلفة من تحضير،

تصميم، تخطيط،،دراسة ميزانية وأخيرا بناء المشروع. بدال من ذلك، اصبحت عملية

حيث اشتغلت معظم هذه المراحل بطريقة موازية لبعضها البعض.

مع تأجيل بعض قرارات التصميم، استمر التخطيط للتنفيذ على موقع ورشة البناء. إن

العوامل والظروف المتغيرة في البناء أدى إلى العديد من التعديلت التي تم التكيف

بها على الموقع.



Field & Fence أرض الملعب والسور

شباب الجزيرة - محمود، أحمد، محمد:

فكرة جديدة بالنسبة ألهالي الجزيرة إنو يشوفو والد و بنات بيشتغلوا مع بعض

بالخشب والمعدات، بس تعودنا عليها.حسينا إنو احنا جزء من المشروع لما كنا

بنساعدكم.بس ياريت كان في نجيلة، الرمل ده

صعب الجري عليه. في رمضان كنا نجي هنا عند الفجر ونلعب كرة، الجو بيبقى حلو

جدا والدنيا لسه منورة. كنا عايزين نلعب بعد اإلفطار بس مفيش نور.

Teenagers from the Island - Mahmoud, Ahmed, Mohammed:

It was new to the island to see girls and guys working together with wood and machines but we got used to it and were helping them out. We wish there was grass on the field; the sand is not optimal for running. In Ramadan, we used to play soccer at dawn because the weather and light conditions allowed it. We wanted to have a mini-tournament at night but the field is not equipped with light.



Furniture األثاث

Ibrahim - Ferry owner This project cleaned up the wholearea and made it beautiful. During events and holidays, people come visit the island from outside and there was no place for them to sit; now there is. Ashraf - Island representative I was very thrilled in the beginning thinking this project would bring revenue if used for weddings and celebrations. For this we still need lighting, electricity, a fence and water.

I wish there was a closed room forliteracy classes. An open space makes people uncomfortable to learn. The design you made definitely upgrades the area, but it is too contemporary for the people’s taste. People here are simple and are used to traditional things. Even playing elements like common swings and slides.

ياريت كان في أوضة مغلقة للتعليم ومحواألمية. عشان الناس مش هترتاح وهي

بتتعلم بمكان مفتوح. ن المنطقة كتير لكن المشروع ده حس

Classroom Wall حائط التدريس

Prince Naguib Abdallah- Dahab Estate and Island inhabitant Officials stopped the projects repeat-edly and there were different rivalries among families, which stopped peo-ple from supporting the project. This project receives respect because it is the first time the people see a project achieved after a promise.

السلطات المعنية عرقلت المشروع كذا مرة وكان في نزاعات بين أسر مختلفة في الجزيرة وده أثر على تضامن الناس لدعم المشروع. بس المشروع ده لقى

إحترام من أهالي الجزيرة عشان أول مرة يشوفوا مشروع بجد بيتحقق بالرغم من كل

الصعوبات لي واجهتو.

Building Interruptionتعطيل البناء

The GUC Design Build Studio Cairo differs from most comparable projects. Many European projects are designed at home and realized abroad, often times in remote villages. As a Cairo based university, we were present before, during and most importantly after the building phase. The building interruption through the Ministry of Water Resources as the responsible agency for the Nile Islands, that felt omitted in the authorization process, took us by surprise. The project was planned and realized as a light-weight construction clearly behind the water management line that defines the obligatory distance to the Nile. It was approved by the Ministry of Transportation as the owner of the site and by Giza as the responsible gover-norate. The building phase with the students and Victor Maschke as the building supervisor ended on March 1st, shortly before the project was finalized. Many weekends and amazing volun-teers later and with the kind support of the German Vice Ambassador and the Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation the project finally opened on May 24th.

ستوديو القاهرة للبناء والتصميم في الجامعة األلمانية بالقاهرة يختلف بطبيعته عن معظم

المشاريع المماثلة. العديد من المشاريع األوروبية تم تصميمها في اوروبا وتنفيذها في الخارج، معظم األحيان في قرى نائية وبعيدة.

ولكن وجود الجامعة األساس للمشروع في نفس المدينة،القاهرة، يعني وجود األساتذة

والطلب في كل المراحل: أي من قبل، خلل، واألهم، من بعد مرحلة البناء.

إن انقطاع البناء من خلل وزارة الموارد المائية، كجهة مسؤولة عن جزر نهر النيل، والتي شعرت

أنها حذفت من عملية التصريحات األساسية، كان أمر مفاجئ للجميع.

فقد تم تصميم وتنفيذ المشروع كبناء خفيف الوزن، يقع بشكل واضح وراء خط إدارة المياه

الذي يحدد المسافة اإللزامية بينة وبين نهر النيل. وقد تمت الموافقة على المشروع من قبل وزارة النقل كون اعتبرها صاحب الموقع

باإلضافة لموافقة ودعم محافظة الجيزة المسؤولة، وبالرغم من ذلك أوقف البناء.

انتهت مرحلة البناء المخطط لها مع الطلب وفيكتور ماشكه كمشرف للبناء باألول من

مارس، قبل أن ينتهي بناء المشروع.ولكن بعد العديد من عطلت نهاية األسبوع

والعمل الشاق من قبل المتطوعين المذهلين، وبفضل مساعدة ودعم نائب السفير األلماني

ونائب وزير الموارد المائية والري، تم انهاء وافتتاح وتسليم المشروع أخيرا عند ال ٢٤ من

مايو.

Laura Oexle - Science Department of the German Embassy in Cairo The German Embassy was delighted to support Malaab El Kobri. It was unique in the sense that the island’s inhabitants were closely involved in the conceptualization and the implementation of the project. Establishing dialogue among citizens and actively engaging them contrib-uted to the needs-oriented character and sustainability of the project.

كانت السفارة األلمانية سعيدة لدعم وتقوية ملعب الكوبرى.

كانت هذه التجربة فريدة من نوعها ألن سكان الجزيرة شاركوا عن كثب في مراحل تطوير

وتنفيذ المشروع.إقامة حوار بين المجتمع المحلي وإشراكهم

في المشروع ساهم بتكوين مشروع مستدام نابع عن احتياجات محلية طالب السكان بها.

Students in the Project It was a fulfilling journey to be able to implement our ideas. Decision-making got out of hand sometimes, which made some of us lose the sense of identification with the final output. Nonetheless, we were looking forward to execute an idea that islanders supported and in the end it was a memorable learning process.

كانت تجربة محمسة إننا ننفذ افكارنا على أرض الواقع. عملية اتخاذ القرار خرجت

ى عن ارادتنا في بعض األحيان، وده خلالبعض منا يفقد اإلحساس باإلنتماء

للتصميم واالنتاج النهائي. ومع ذلك كنا نتطلع إلى تنفيذ فكرة كانت قد دعمت

من أهالي الجزيرة. باآلخر كانت تجربة تعليمية ال تنسى.

I met Carla and Cornelia when theywere measuring the land and toldthem if you are going to build theproject, I will definitely help. Helping you is the least we can do, you are the first people who actually realise a project here after you promised to do so. This place used to attract dealers and was full of trash; now it is open, public and cleaner.

Ahmed Mazloum - AYB NGO As AYB, we have the authority totrain local communities to create localorganizations to sustain the project.The main lag was a result of thecommunity’s lack of enthusiasm andsupport to create a representativecommittee that would also direct theproject. Currently we see the projectstill lacking privacy, grass and aclosed fence.

أنا كفرد من جمعية علشانك يا بلدي يسمح لي اني أشكل جمعية محلية إلدارة

واستدامة المشروع. الخلل حصل من عدم تحمس و تعاون أهالي الجزيرة لتشكيل لجنة

ممثلة ليهم علشان هما مش على وفاق مع بعض. احنا شايفين المشروع ناقسو

حدود وخصوصية دلوقتي، لسا عاوزين نضيف سور و نجيلة.

Inauguration - Ala Abouhاإلفتتاح - على أبوه

The ‘Ala Abouh’ event was an in situ urban exhibition made by a group of multidisciplinary performers, who collaborated and experimented to produce spontaneous works in ‘Ala Abouh’ (Egyptian for ad-hoc) ways. This event was used to activate Malaab El Kobri and inaugurate it with a creative set of activities and acts as well as a celebration of the new public space.

حدث »على أبوه« كان عبارة عن معرض حضري حصل على الموقع، أدلى به مجموعة

فريدة من نوعها من الفنانين المعاصرين بأدائهم الذين قاموا بالتعاون إلنتاج أعمال

عفوية على طريقة »على أبوه« ؛وهي عبارة مصرية تشير إلى أحداث تحصل في الساعة من

دون تخطيط مسبق. تم استخدام هذا الحدث لتنشيط وتقوية

ملعب الكوبري وافتتاحه مع مجموعة من األنشطة الخلقة كما أنه كان احتفال بالفضاء

العام الجديد.

Coloring Workshopورشة التلوين

Since the inauguration, the platformand football field have been in use by islanders and guests alike.The structure is sustaining its multiple uses although the role of field manager has not yet been filled and the decision by the students to make this by all means a publicly accessible space is contested by the inhabitants.After the summer, a small group came back for a paint workshop with the kids to finally apply some color to the structure.Currently, a group of GUC architecture students together with Cairo UniversityWater and Environmental Sciences aredesigning and, with the community’sconsent, hoping to build the missingcompost toilets. Proposals for events and extensions are in the air.The responsibilities of designbuilding for a community in need as an educational format are twofold. With Malaab El Kobri as a case study for EDBKN we hope to promote the integration of designbuild projects in curricula to meet these responsibilities, not only before and during, but also after their imple-mentation.

منذ االفتتاح، الملعب وملعب كرة القدم يتم استخدامهما بشكل كامل من قبل أهالي

الجزيرة والزائرين. على الرغم من أنه لم يكن قد تم إشغال دور مدير الملعب رسميا،

وعلى الرغم ايضا من إعتراض أهالي الجزيرة على قرارالطلب بجعل هذا الملعب مفتوح

لإلستخدام العام بشكل تام.بعد العطلة الصيفية من المشروع ، عادت

مجموعة صغيرة ونظمت ورشة عمل ألوان في عطلة نهاية األسبوع مع األطفال، لتطبيق

بعض األلوان على البنية أخيرا.حاليا، هناك مجموعة من طلب الهندسة

المعمارية وبرنامج التصميم المدني في الجامعة األلمانية بالقاهرة الذين يقومون

بالتعاون مع طلب علوم البيئة والمياه في جامعة القاهرة للقيام بتصميم وتنفيذ

المراحيض الناشفة التي ال تزال مفقودة. يتم العمل على هذه األساسيات بموافقة وتعاون

سكان الجزيرة. في هذه األثناء، يوجد أفكار لمقترحات أخرى على أمل الحصول على فرص

جديدة لتنمية ملعب الكوبري وتعزيزه.مسؤليات ستديو التصميم والبناء كتنسيق

تعليمي لمجتمع ذو حاجة هو أمر ذو شقين. مع كون ملعب الكوبري حالة دراسية لمشاريع

التصميم والبناء من EDBKN، نأمل أن نعزز دمج مشاريع التصميم والبناء ضمن المناهج الدراسية لتلبية هذه المسؤليات، ليس فقط قبل وأثناء، ولكن بعد تنفيذ المشاريع أيضا.
