Echosensitivity
The Rosemount 5400 Series is our premium, 2-wire
radar level transmitter for process applications. It deliv-
ers everything you would expect from a best-in-class
process radar – superior reliability, state-of-the-art
safety features, effortless handling, and unlimited
connectivity. An industry first, the Rosemount 5400
offers peak performance in the three areas that are
vital to radar level measurement: echosensitivity
Peak performance in the three vital areas.
– the ability to detect weak radar echoes reliably;
echodynamics – the ability to handle weak and strong
radar echoes simultaneously; and echologics – the abil-
ity to ignore false echoes. This combination enables
the Rosemount 5400 Series to perform like no other
2-wire radar. Since this technology concept has been
developed with our customers’ bottom line in mind,
we call it Radar EchonomicsTM.
The Rosemount 5400 Series is the first non-contacting radar level
transmitter developed from the ground up to improve profitability in
your process plant. It comprises the “Radar Echonomics” approach,
adding value to your plant by optimally utilizing the radar signals to
secure reliable measurement.
Radar Echonomics builds on a combination of advanced echosensi-
tivity, balanced echodynamics and smart echologics. These advanced
technical solutions create an optimal interplay between electronics,
microwave technology, and software.
Radar Echonomics™ Innovative measurement technologies.
Echodynamics – the capacity to handle weak and strong echoes simultaneously
As the distance to the surface increases, the radar signal becomes
weaker, while echoes from disturbing objects remain constant. This
means that a good radar sensor must be able to pick up both weak and
strong signals simultaneously. The 5400 Series utilizes Dynamic Range
Optimization to compensate for the distance-dependent attenuation
of the radar signal, making it possible to take accurate readings even in
tall tanks. We call this capacity Echodynamics.
Echologics – the ability to recognize the true echoes from the clutter
A good radar sensor should never confuse the echo from the fluid surface
with other echoes, which may be several times stronger. Echologics is the
term we use for the capacity to determine which signal is the ‘right’ signal.
The Rosemount 5400 Series can track five different echoes simultane-
ously while the level in the tank increases or decreases or the tank content
changes. As a result, clutter signals from beams, agitators, heating coils,
and the tank bottom can be identified and ignored.
Echosensitivity – the ability to detect weak echoes reliably
Generally, a weak radar echo is difficult to measure reliably. The more
the surface of the liquid and the atmosphere in the tank attenuates the
radar signal, the weaker the echo becomes. The dual microwave ports,
along with other unique features, allow the 5400 Series to have a much
stronger signal than other radar level transmitters. The result is a more
reliable level measurement. We call this ability Echosensitivity.

Dual port technologyThe dual microwave ports for sending and receiving radar signals yield a 75% stronger signal than single port transmitters.
Dual compartment housingElectronics and cable connections are located in separate compartments, which provide safer handling and improved moisture protection.
Robust designThe robust, shock-resistant, and vibration-proof design of the housing and flange protect the electronics and waveguide from mechanical damage.
Quad-ridged Rod Antenna with plate designThe inactive portion has been enhanced to obtain maximum performance. The protective plate design allows only corrosive-resistant non-metallic materials to be exposed to the tank atmosphere.
Circular PolarizationSmart use of microwave technology automatically reduces the disturbance effect close to tankwalls, simplifying commissioning and maximizing reliability.
1 Smart surface tracking capabilitiesSophisticated transmitter software utilizes advanced mathematical algorithms to track and categorize up to five simultaneous echoes, delivering higher measurement reliability.
Measure-and-Learn signal processingBy initiating the Measure-and-Learn function, the transmitter will automatically adjust the 100 point threshold curve to the specific tank and register large obstructions as false-echoes.
Interchangeable transmitter headThe transmitter head can be rotated and easily removed from the antenna and flange for service or replacement, without opening the tank.
Condensation-resistant cone antennaLarger sealing surface towards the process, making the transmitter less sensitive to condensation and dirt.

You’ve probably noticed it already. The 5400 Series
doesn’t look like other Rosemount transmitters. To
accommodate the powerful electronics, we needed
a new housing. Still, the construction had to be
compact and solid, defi nitely “Rosemount”.
Industrial designers were brought in to create a func-
tional and attractive housing that would withstand a
hostile environment. The result is as rock-solid as it
looks, but there’s more to it than style. This innovation
has one single purpose: to improve the safety and
effi ciency of your plant.
A smart design for better ergonomics
The basic form is a horizontal cylinder, like all Rosemount
transmitters. But the ends of the cylinder are con-
structed at a 45 degree angle, which makes the cylinder
more compact. This also tilts the display upward, along
with the cover for the connection block. If the sensor is
mounted below eye level, which is often the case with
level transmitters, this facilitates installation, measure-
ment reading, or service.
Cooling fi ns for longer service life
On the underside of the sensor housing, cooling fi ns
help conduct and dissipate excess heat from the pro -
cess. This results in a longer lifespan for the electronic
components in the sensor.
The look of innovation.
Level measurement in storage and buffer tanksThe Rosemount 5400 Series is the preferred choice in these applications. It provides a very reliable and accurate level reading without any moving parts or contact with the process, eliminating costly maintenance requirements.
No contact. No problem.
Level measurement in reactor and mixing tanksThe Rosemount 5400 Series is also the best choice for reactor and mixing tanks. It is unaffected by almost any fluid property changes, including but not limited to density, pH, and viscosity.
Level measurement in pipes and stilling wellsUnaffected by temperature, pressure, and vapor gas mixtures, the Rosemount 5400 Series is also an excellent choice for level measurements in pipes. The tank-structure is invisible to the radar because the signal is confined within the pipe.
The performance of the non-contacting Rosemount 5400 level
transmitter makes it suitable for a wide range of process applications.
It installs easily into existing openings, which means fast and
inexpensive start-up and a quicker return on your investment.
Rosemount 5401, Low Frequency Transmitter (6 GHz)The 5401 is ideal for applications with obstacles, turbulence, condensation, vapor, dust, contamination, and foam, or where there is a risk of deposits forming on the antenna.
Rosemount 5402, High Frequency Transmitter (26 GHz)The 5402 produces a narrow, concentrated radar beam resulting in smaller antenna diameters, and is suitable for mounting on valves, taller nozzles, or smaller openings. The narrow beam also means that it is easier to avoid unwanted reflections from mechanical obstacles such as agitators and heating coils, making it less sensitive to mounting position.
Low frequency and high frequency models available to meet your application needs.Because no radar frequency is ideal for all process applications,
the ability to choose between two models allows you to choose
the frequency that will best fit your application.
Easy plant integration.
