CHA Designer Directory WelcomeWelcome to the Designer Directory for the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) Designer SectionMembers. This directory provides information about the Designer Section to help you in your search ofprofessional creative services offered by our Designer Section members.

This guide does not limit nor restrict how a designer and client work together—it is only an informationalresource. Many factors go into determining design services and fees, including experience, skill and thescope of the work to be conducted. This guide is not exhaustive nor does it limit the arrangement betweena designer and the client.

Each designer is responsible for developing his or her own list of services offered to their clients and therange of fees for the design services.

Description of a CHA Designer Section Member

A CHA Designer Section Member is an individual or company, whose principle business providesdesigning, educating, consulting, demonstrating or other related fee-based services for the Craft & Hobbyindustry. The members listed in this directory must qualify to be CHA Designers and are current, verifiedmembers of CHA. Visit the Membership Page on the CHA website for more information.

Benefits of Hiring a CHA Designer Section Member

In addition to skills and expertise, there are additional reasons why it is beneficial for clients to hire aprofessional designer.

Professional designers demonstrate a high level of professionalism and performance. As businessowners, the professional designer has a strong understanding of the craft industry to help meet theirclient’s needs.

Well-connected and familiar with many aspects of the craft industry, professional designers can drawupon their wealth of experience and knowledge when working on projects for clients. Theyunderstand the manufacturer’s product and seek to promote the inherent features and benefits of theproduct.

By using a professional designer, the performance of the craft industry increases. Higher-qualitydemonstrations and education programs emerge, and better-designed samples compel consumers topurchase products. There are more focused and expertly executed social and marketing campaigns togrow a company’s reach in the marketplace.

Companies spend less time and human capital on training professional designers because professionaldesigners enter the relationship with a developed skill set in place, well-rounded experience, and alevel of professionalism.

Repetitive work with clients increases the organizational memory of the craft industry as a whole,benefiting not only long-term clients but the industry in general.

Professional designers meet deadlines, honor commitments, understand confidentiality and know howto act in a business-like manner. Their understanding of this industry comes from a business anddesign perspective.

Continually seeking education and training, professional designers look to improve their skills toincrease their knowledge base. They belong to an organization which encourages a higher standard ofprofessionalism and provides education to support this higher standard.

Many professional designers attend the trade shows within and outside of the industry in order tonetwork with other professionals and establish relationships that can be beneficial to their clients. Forexample, in the discipline of social marketing a highly networked designer can more effectivelylaunch cross-promotions with other companies through their prior established contacts.

Skilled creators of original designs, professional designers have a strong knowledge of design, colorand craft trends. They provide clear and concise instructions and other written materials. Professionaldesigners can reference a company’s brand correctly, including all trademarks and technical languagesince design-section members are the industry’s insiders. Some professional designers will also beable to provide photography and will be able to prepare materials for printing using appropriatesoftware.

Many professional designers have contacts with publishing companies for books and/or magazinesand can often secure promotional placement.

Designers can facilitate cross-promotional marketing initiatives with other complementary brands andgive a more professional presentation of their client’s products.

Common Pricing MethodsThe individual Designer Section member companies have many different pricing methods for theirservices and artwork and the ones listed below are just a few of the common pricing methods. Becausecurrency fluctuates, those working internationally need to be aware of current currency rates when settingprices.

Licensing

A licensing agreement is a contractual arrangement between the company and the Designer in which thedesigner derives a percentage of the revenue of the sales or services from the professional designer’sartwork or services. The licensee can also be an arranged flat fee for the professional designer’s work orservices on a “Work for Hire” (WFH) basis.

Licensing agreements can vary and may be negotiated to fit each situation. Every licensing arrangementis made to fit the situation to the parties involved. The intellectual property (IP) rights are held by theprofessional designer unless transferred to the client through a contracted, mutual agreement. This methodmay or may not entail additional negotiation and the use of an intellectual property attorney.

Fixed-Price Method

The individual designer company determines a fixed-price for the project or service based upon the directand indirect costs associated with the job, their time associated with completing the job, and theirvaluable skill.

The fixed-price method covers all material costs, labor costs, over-head costs and a fair profit margin.Changes to the project by the client, may affect the cost of the project.



Under this Work-for-Hire method, the intellectual property rights are held by the professional designerunless transferred to the client through a contracted, mutual agreement. Project prices are higher forprojects which include transferal of IP rights to clients. The use of an intellectual property attorney isrecommended when negotiating IP rights.

If you are an employee of a company, the company holds the intellectual property rights to the workunless otherwise agreed upon.

Time and Materials Method

The time-and-materials pricing method consist of two pricing components. The first component is thedirect labor, which is the time to complete the job. Typically, a labor hourly rate is multiplied by thenumber of hours to perform the task. The hourly rate, or time component, of a designer is determined bymany factors such as skill level, supply and demand, overhead costs and profit for the job. In addition tothe hourly rate, some designers also use a daily, weekly and monthly rate.

The second component of the Time and Materials Method is based on the direct-materials component,which is the direct material and fees cost associated with completing the job.

Invoicing for this pricing method normally shows the hourly rate with the number of hours worked andthe direct-materials charge. The direct-materials can be line-itemized or be added together and listed asone dollar amount. Tax laws vary from state to state, so designers should check with your state to see ifthere is a tax advantage for invoicing expenses and supplies separately.

Under this Work for Hire method, the intellectual property rights are held by the designer company unlesstransferred to the client through a contracted, mutual agreement. Project prices are higher for projectswhich include transferal of IP rights to clients. Hiring an intellectual property attorney is recommendedwhen negotiating IP rights.

Examples of Designer Services CHA Designer Section Members provide a wide range of design services to Editors, Manufacturers andPublishers (EMPs). Due to the wide range of services, we have chosen to list the most common servicesoffered by the Designer Section Companies.

Each designer is responsible for developing his/her own listing of services and rates offered to clients.Services and rates will vary based on the individual designer’s experience, industry knowledge and skillsets. A professional designer’s talents, skills and expertise influence the fees of a service. In addition, onemust take into consideration the type of service being offered, the scope of the work, and what the marketwill bear.

how a designer and client work together financially or otherwise.



Blog-Post Writing

Designers create content that is placed on a client’s blog or may be placed on the designer’s blog. Thiscan be a reoccurring service or can be in the form of a guest post.

Broadcast Media Presenters/Demonstrators

The presenter or demonstrator is a guest on a live or taped television show to present the manufacturers’products and may design projects and techniques, which showcase the features and benefits of themanufacturers’ products to inspire a sale. Example: The Home Shopping Network

Class Instructor/Teacher

A class instructor develops a class from an original designed project, in order to help promote amanufacturer’s product or product line. The class instructor provides a project sample, which may includewritten project instructions for a handout.

The class instructor conducts the class and provides detailed instruction during the class. The instructormay prepare class supplies or kits for the class. They may provide a professional presentation withPowerPoint, printed instructions with color photos as dictated by the company and event type.

Craft Media Promoter/Spokesperson

A craft media promoter or spokesperson presents a client’s products as a guest or host on television orinternet shows. Presentations may be live or recorded. They may also build excitement around productsby networking with consumers directly on social media platforms.

Demonstrator

A demonstrator shows others how to use the client’s tools or products. The demonstrator isknowledgeable about the product and can speak to the products strengths. The demonstrations can takeplace in a store, trade show or other event.

Design Team Manager or Coordinator

A design team manager or coordinator facilitates creative and social media marketing collaborations ofmultiple designers working toward the common goal of promoting a brand. The design team coordinatorsmay facilitate cross-promotions between companies and designers. The coordinator will assign andschedule projects to designers for catalog work, booth display, blog posts and other design work needs.

Free-Lance Writer

A free-lance writer produces written text within a timeframe and clear goals for clients.



General Industry Consultant

A general industry consultant is someone with whom clients can consult about industry practices andinformation. Consultation might include general information about product ideas, developing designteams and educator programs. It could also be general marketing advice, where to find design help forvarious projects and information on various aspects of our industry,

Manufacturer Samples

The designer creates project samples for use in advertising materials, product packaging, trade showbooths, websites, project sheets, “make it/take it” projects and more. This may also include instructions.

New-Exhibitor Consulting

A consulting service to provide new CHA manufacturers with orientation to the craft industry and adviceon booth design, events, social media, displays, marketing materials, and promotions.

Product Development

The professional designer presents ideas for product lines to manufacturers for tools, paper,embellishments and other products or services. They work with the client to test the products, provideeducation through samples and/or instructions and teach classes to representatives, retailers andconsumers.

Project Design

Project design is a development of an original project to help highlight and promote client’s product orproduct line. The project includes a project sample with or without written instructions, a materials list,photography of the finished project, step-by-step photos (also known as step-outs). It could also be in theform of a video tutorial.

There are also projects created for “Make n’ Take” samples, marketing materials for print or Internet,submission for features in retailer’s catalogs and marketing or for other purposes.

Photography

Provides digital or traditional photography for publication in magazines, newsletters, newspapers, blogs, booklets, websites, advertisements, product packaging, project sheets, books, marketing and other public relations materials. It can include step-by-step photography for project and/or technique instructions. Photography may or may not include styling.

Promotional Articles

The professional designer provides content for publication in magazines, columns, newsletters,newspapers, blogs, booklets, project sheets, website, advertising and public relations materials.

Research & Development/Focus Groups

Designers may work with a client to develop a product or products that will expand or enhance theirexisting product line, or create a new line to extend their product offering. Test products in developmentand provide feedback to the manufacturer, including suggested improvements, benefits, favorable andunfavorable features of the product.

Sewing - Basic

Some designers provide basic-craft sewing services to create home décor or craft items.

Surface Design

A surface designer provides original designs to be used on fabrics and/or other products.

Social Media Coordinator/Social Media Consultant

A social media coordinator implements and maintains a company’s brand and presence on various socialmedia platforms. A social media coordinator can work with a Design Team Coordinator to secure contentfor the company blog, Facebook page, and any other promotions for which artwork or design ideas.

In some cases, the social media coordinator may also assume the role of design team coordinator. Thesocial media coordinator develops an online marketing plan with the company, working with MarketingDirectors and other company staff.

The social media coordinator implements the plan, monitors return on investment and progress towardscompany goals. They report results back to the company and the marketing director for assessment.

The social media coordinator stays up-to-date on current marketing trends, guidelines, and rules withinsocial marketing platforms and industry to better inform the content selection and strategy.

Turnkey-Publishing Services

Turnkey-publishing services provides independent book-publishing services to clients which can includecraft projects for the book content.



TV Host

Works for production companies to host craft related TV shows. The host moderates live or recordedpresentations intended for broadcast on national and international TV channels. The host is familiar withtechniques, projects and subject matter being presented by the guest(s). Host may also design and presentprojects and techniques for manufacturers to showcase the features and benefits of specified products. TVHosts may or may not be members of SAG (Screen Actors Guild).
