Curved Ceiling Design Through Technology
• Curved Ceiling Options Are Easier to Design • Pre-Engineered Curves Can Reduce Cost
• Sophisticated New Computer – Aided Design Programs • Innovative Systems Technologies
• Computer Assisted Manufacturing Processes
Software Generated Rendering Of A Basket Weave Lay-in Ceiling Panel
The manufacturing process becomes easier through renderings like these. This one is showing 3 dimensional preformed curved translucent panels laid in a basket weave pattern in a conventional flat 9/16” grid. Modular sized panels allow for renovation
without reconfiguration of existing grid.
Commercial Interior Environments with Curves Create Drama and Excitement
• Add Depth and Interest to an Interiors “Fifth” Plane
• New Opportunities in Lighting and Signage
• Guide Pedestrian Traffic
Design Professionals discovered the possibilities associated with ceilings in the late 70’s and the desire to add excitement and movement to the ceiling plane continues to grow. Buildings like the Guggenheim Museum New York, The Los Angeles Pacific Design Center, and Bilbao Spain all helped strengthen the foundation for Curves. Whether your adding lighting or signage, guiding pedestrian traffic or just adding depth and interest to a room. All rooms can be enhanced while incorporating curves.
The 5 Standard Types of Curved Ceilings
1.Perimeter trim – Which is typically vertical, available in multiple heights and color options 180/360 etc.
2.Metal accent systems - Examples of that would be a Razor Edge or paired suspension trims.
3.Curved metal -Available in one, and two directional systems. Also in Concealed torsion spring systems.
4.Drywall suspension can have Undulating Edges, Valleys, Vaults, and Domes
1.Luminous wave options for flat suspension with wave panels, and
wave suspension with conforming luminous or opaque infill panels.
Curved Perimeter Trim With Open Cell Grid
This is an example of an Open Cell Grid with Cloud curved perimeter trim. All the components are painted 360 degrees.
Curved Perimeter Trim

ceiling above.
No Visible Suspension /Computer Assisted Perforation Lay-Out
Here is a parallel metal sculpture with No Visible Suspension “grid-less” feature system. The aluminum panels are individually fabricated and interconnect to form a continuous
uninterrupted plane. Notice the perforation pattern follows the design.
Wave Ceiling With Two Directional Suspension And Custom Lighting
McCarran Airport United Terminal, Las Vegas, NV used a 2 directional grid system with 2 X 2 perforated metal panels and Neon Sculpted lights to help guide pedestrian traffic leading to departure and arrival gates.
This system uses a series of preformed valleys and vault grid along with metal infill panels.
Undulating Luminous Ceiling
Undulating Luminous Ceiling with preformed translucent panels on a pre-engineered grid system.
Custom Wave Ceilings / Conceptual Type
• Various Types Of Materials – Metal, Wood, Gypsum, High Tech Plastics are all possible
• Types Of Access – Point access can be upward or downward
• Finish and Shape – Metal, Paint, Wood Grain, Metallic Paint, Polished and
Custom Painted in various shapes • Special Function
– Custom Lighting, Corporate Logos, Special Needs such as aesthetics or color for pedestrian direction or security
An Example Of A Custom Radius And Custom Trim
Custom / One directional Metal System with custom closure and custom edge trim
Curved Ceilings Can Perform
• Acoustical Performance Can Be Provided – Perforated metal panels can have an acceptable NRC of .65
with an absorbent fabric backer or .90 with a poly-bagged glass fiber insulation.
• Many Lighting Options
– Down lights, translucent infill panels, track lighting, soffit lighting, cove lighting, and even neon
• Light Reflectance Can Be Addressed
Curved Ceilings Can Perform
• Metal Protection: – Hot Dipped Galvanized or Aluminum Metal Panels both Provide Long
term Sustainability. Where Electro-Galvanized Metals are not acceptable for Sustainability. Interior Grid Market has changed from Electro-Galvanized to Hot Dipped Galvanized due to Red Rusting
• Sustainable / Recycled Content Are Important Today – Typical Average of Recycled Content: Aluminum = 90%; Steel = 25%;
Gypsum = 95-1% depending on material source. – Aluminum and Steel can be recycled from demolition, gypsum board
cannot.
Manufactured Perimeter Trim
• Curved & Straight Edges In Steel Or Aluminum
• Different Profile Heights – Ranging from 2”, 4”, 6”, 8” , 10” or 12”
• Vertical And Horizontal Capabilities
• Painted, Polished And Wood Grain
• Paired Perimeter Systems
Aluminum and Steel Perimeter Trim
Aluminum Perimeter Trim Steel Perimeter Trim
An example of grid attachment on both Aluminum and Steel Perimeter Trim through use of attachment clips. The difference in these two systems will be profile heights, minimum
radius, finishes, and ease of grid attachment through clips.
Perimeter Trim Creating Islands
Example of a large space being improved by the used of “islands” formed with Straight Perimeter trim. Straight systems are made from standard components which improve availability.
Curved Perimeter Trim Creating a Layered Ceiling and Soffit
Curved perimeter trim used to create “layered ceilings” that can
be used to conceal lighting or could serve for supply or return
air. There is also an opportunity to improve acoustics through this
type of layering.
Curved Perimeter Trim Creating a Layered Ceiling and Soffit
Another example of Curved Perimeter Trim used to create a undulating curved soffit edge
and return air through layered ceiling. Good contrast between white and black.
Islands and Voids
Here we can see how straight and curved trim can be used to compliment each other. The
larger shape is referred to as an island while the empty circle is a void.
Horizontal Edge Trim
Here is a example of a horizontal edge trim providing a wide low profile edge. It “frames” the island with a look that has a razor edge and is sometimes thought to be more contemporary. Can
only be used on square and rectangular clouds requiring inside and outside corners. Some Manufacturers provide premade corners to eliminate gapping at field mitered corners.
Wood Grain Options
Here the trim system is finished in a Wood grain finish. This example shows a linear plank pan in 2’ X 2’ and 1’ X 5’ panels. The wood grain trim complements the design. Coordinating trim
could also be supplied.
Paired Perimeter Options
Paired Perimeter Trim left empty, integrated with light track. Possible options could be to include neon in the reveal, use light rope or hang signage.
