Quick-Guide to Scoring a Game on your PC

After you have reviewed the manual and understand the basic set-up ofScorePAD, here’s a quick step-by-step guide to score your first game.

Game setup view and starting a new game

In the Game Scoring view in ScorePAD, you should complete the followingsteps: Select New Game from the File menu of the Game Scoring view.

1. Enter the abbreviations of the home and visiting teams or use thedown arrows to select the teams if they are entered inRosterPAD (the roster view of ScorePAD)

2. Set game start date and time3. Enter field name, weather conditions, and officials' names

Please refer to the Game Parameters section of the ScorePAD handbook forfurther instructions on game setup.

ScorePAD will store as many games as your PC has free memory. You maysetup and use the current game to start scoring. If you have already used thecurrent game and wish to create a new game, click New Game from the Filemenu of the Game Scoring view.

Entering the starting lineup

ScorePAD automatically loads the rosters of the teams you select from the GameSetup View under Parameters and league selection, if the rosters are enteredin RosterPAD. In the Game Scoring view you will select the lineups for eachteam.

To select lineups you must:

1. Select the team - by tapping on its first spot in the batting order2. Select a batting order - the roster will pop up on the right of the

screen3. Select a defensive position for each player - if not already selected in

RosterPAD

Selecting players for the lineup

To select a player when RosterPAD players have been pre-entered:

Page 20: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

20 ScorePAD Handbook

1. Click on the batting slot you wish to change.2. A list box will appear with the names of all players entered for that team.

The player list box will show position players first, then pitchers. Each list isin alphabetical order.

3. Click on the name of the player you wish to place.

Once you have selected a player for each slot in the batting order, the lineup isalmost complete.

If you have not entered players for the selected team into RosterPAD, theLineup view will appear whenever you select a player position.

An alternative way to enter lineups is by selecting Starting Lineup from theLineup menu.

Setting defensive positions

Finally, you must set the defensive positions of your lineup. ScorePAD makesthis task just as easy as setting the lineup. Click on the box to the right ofplayer's name. A list box will appear with all defensive positions recognized byScorePAD. Tap the correct defense position and you are done. You shouldhave one and only one pitcher per lineup. If no pitcher is selected pitchingstatistics are credited to Unknown Pitcher.

When you have selected defensive positions for each player, you have com-pleted the starting lineup. You can also set the lineup and defensive positions inthe Starting lineup from the Lineup menu of the Game Scoring view.

Player substitution

As each team substitutes players, you must make changes to your score card toreflect those substitutions. Changes in the lineup take place in two forms:straight and double switch.

Straight substitution

In a straight substitution, one or more players enter the game in the samebatting order and defensive positions as the players they replaced.

Double switch substitution

In a double switch, two or more players enter the game in different defensivepositions than the players they replaced in the batting order. For instance, acoach might bring in a new pitcher and a left fielder. In a double switch he

Page 21: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

21

places the left-fielder in the current pitcher's batting slot and the pitcher in thecurrent left-fielder's batting slot.

With ScorePAD you can substitute any player for any other player. ScorePADmaintains statistics for all players that participate in a game whether starting orsubstitutes.

ScorePAD note on batting entire roster:Some youth leagues bat more than the standard 9 players. If your league batsthe entire roster, but you have numerous defensive switches, try using thismethod of substitution. For example: A player bats 11th in the order. He startsthe game on the bench but is still batting. In the third inning he moves to thirdbase. In the fifth inning he moves to left field. Finally, in the sixth inning hereturns to the bench.

1 Set your lineup at the beginning of the game2 The defensive alignment graphic in the Game Scoring view will

show you what positions you have open and what has already beenfilled.

3 To select a position for a player, simply click the position next to theplayers name. If they are not currently at a defensive position you canlist them as no position which will produce a dash (--) next to theirname.

4 When it is time to bring in the players from the bench and makeother defensive switches, use the starting lineup and click the positionnext to their name.

5 It is usually easiest to move players currently in the game to NoPosition (--), then move the players from No Position into the game

6 This will allow you to make defensive switches only. A prompt willask you if this is a Position Change or a Correction? This is a PositionChange.

7 This will give you a clear and correct substitution

Scoring an At-batScoring procedure

In ScorePAD, a game is simply the aggregate of all of its at-bats. ScorePAD at-bats contain:

PitcherPitch sequencePitch resultsOn-base and/or out reasonsBase advance reasons and players

Page 22: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

22 ScorePAD Handbook

Destination of ball put in playPitch detail

There are several different ways to score an at-bat. They are:

1. Record balls and strikes by selecting the appropriate buttons2. With your mouse select either the Out or On Base buttons and

choose the on-base or out type; or you may type in the scoring playinto the Command window [example 63]; or you can click on one ofthe hot buttons available directly below the field view.

3. Click on playing field to show where batter hit the ball4. Click the Advance button to move batter around bases or drag-and-

drop runners (preferred method)5. Click the Out button and reason to show how the batter was out

on-base (if applicable)

Recording pitchesSince you will spend a great deal of time watching and recording balls andstrikes, we made this operation simple and flexible. Either click one of the fivepitch buttons in the Game Scoring View (Ball, Strike, Foul, POA, N) or clickon the balls and strikes boxes displayed on the top right hand side of the at-batsquare.

Reaching baseWhen a batter reaches base on a base on balls or a hit, use your mouse toselect the proper on-base button on the left side of the at-bat square.

BB - Walk or base on balls1B - Single2B - Double3B - TripleHR - Home run

For other on-base types, touch the On Base button located on the right of theat-bat square and select the proper on-base result, or use our preferredmethod and type in the result in the command window.

Visit the Reference chapter in this manual for a list of on-base results and theirreasons.

Page 23: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

23

Advancing BaserunnersWhen you select an on-base result, the On Base button disappears and theAdvance button appears. After clicking the Advance button, select theproper advance reason from the list. Advance reasons such as batter advancewill prompt you for more information. If runners are on-base, ScorePAD willprompt you to advance those runners unless the advance of runners on-base isautomatic. In the case of a Hit-by-pitch, Walk, Triple, or Home run, base runnersare automatically advanced.

You can also move a baserunner through prompts created by ScorePAD.Simply double click on the base the runner now occupies and following thedirections above.

Drag and drop base advances(recommended)While you record the at-bat of current batter (the batter now at the plate), youcan use the Drag-and-Drop runner advance feature.

Drag-and-Drop base advances were designed to allow you to advance runnerson base while recording the balls and strikes for the current batter. Thisfunction saves you the effort and time of moving from one at-bat to the nextevery time a runner advances. Drag-and-drop allows you to advance anyrunner presently on base from the screen of the batter at the plate.

To use Drag and drop, complete the following steps:

1. Use the left click of your mouse on any occupied base and drag from thatbase to the destination base for that runner. The base will highlight when youhave dragged far enough.

2. Lift off the left click button or your mouse. ScorePAD will display a list boxof Advance types.

3. Select the appropriate advance type.

You can also click on any occupied base and it will move you to that player'sat-bat screen. ScorePAD note: This method is not recommended because itis more time consuming and can become confusing.

1. Once you are at the runner's at-bat screen, use your mouse to select the

Page 24: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

24 ScorePAD Handbook

Advance button.2. Select the appropriate advance type.3. ScorePAD will prompt you for the destination base for that runner. Selectthe destination base.4. Once you have completed work on that at-bat, click on the double arrowsand ScorePAD will take you back to the current at-bat.

Note: Drag-and-drop runner advances were designed as a convenience.During an at-bat, if a runner steals a base or advances on a wild pitch, passed ball, etc., you can use drag-and-drop.

Recording an outThe Game Scoring view allows you to record outs five different ways.

When you are keeping pitches and record a total of three strikes, the Game Scoring view assumes that the batter struck out and popsup a menu box to choose the type of strikeout.

Whether a batter has reached base or not, you may select theOut button on the right of the at-bat square view and select an outresult. The out result list also contains Strikeout so you can selectStrikeout from the list if you do not wish to touch strike three times.

You can type in the result in the Command box just below theat-bat square using baseball scoring shorthand. For example, writing"63" and the GO button represents a grounder to shortstop thrownto first for the putout. "F8 and the GO button" would be a flyout tocenter field. (ScorePAD's preferred method)

You can use the hot buttons listed below the at-bat square torecord the result. For example, using your mouse to select "63"represents a grounder to shortstop thrown to first for the putout.Using the small field diagram below to select "8" while the "Flyout"button is selected will result in "F8," a flyout to centerfield. This oneclick method makes scoring fast and easy. (ScorePAD's preferredmethod)

When runners are on base, you may right click your mouse onthe runner. When the list of out on-base out results appears, selectthe proper out type and record the defensive positions that assisted orperformed the putout.

Page 25: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

25

Defensive PositionsSome outs will require that you enter the defensive positions that assisted in orcompleted the putout. The Defensive Positions dialog will appear when the at-bat needs that information.

The Defensive Positions dialog shows the defensive positions by their positionnames. To record defensive positions, clcik on each position that assisted in orcompleted the putout. As you click on a defensive position button, the positionnumber for the position button you click appears on the edit line on thebottom-left of this dialog. The Cancel Out button will appear until you enterdefensive positions. Once you enter defensive positions, the Cancel Outbutton will change to Finish Fielders. When you finish entering defensivepositions, select Finish Fielders.

If you make a mistake, click the Undo button to erase that entry entirelyincluding base advances by all runners. If you want to cancel the out after youhave entered one or more defensive positions, click the Undo button untilCancel Out reappears. Finally, click the Cancel Out button.

Base running outsIf a runner is out while on base (for example caught stealing or picked off)there is an easy way to record the out while never leaving the at-bat of thecurrent batter.

35

Leagues

Leagues in ScorePAD equate to categories in RosterPAD. Since many youthbaseball leagues use a common set of team names, RosterPAD employs the useof leagues to distinguish teams. If your child plays in My Park on the Astros andyou are playing the Their Park Astros, you might create My Park and Their ParkLeagues in RosterPAD and add each player to their respective league. Youmight also create a league for each age group within a park (i.e. 9-10 My Park)ScorePAD allows you to pick from those leagues on the Game Parametersdialog.

To select a league:

1. Click on the current league name.2. The list of RosterPAD leagues will appear.3. Click on the league you wish to assign.

Remember, you can only create leagues, teams, and players in RosterPAD. Youcan create 16 leagues (categories) and assign as many players as you have freememory.

Number of lineup players

With some free substitution rules, all of the players on the team become part ofthe batting order though they may or may not play a defensive position. Toaccommodate this scenario, ScorePAD allows you to set the number of lineupplayers for each team (from 5 up to 18 per team). Since ScorePAD automati-cally moves from the current batter to the next logical batter, you must set theexact number of batters on each team.

Page 36: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

36 ScorePAD Handbook

If you use a Designated Hitter (DH) for one of your defensive players, includehis or her position in the number of lineup players and check the DH may beused check box. For example, an MLB team in the National League uses nineplayers on offense and defense with no DH. In the American League, teams usea DH to bat for one of the defensive players (usually the pitcher). In ScorePADyou will set the number of Lineup Players to 9 for National League teams and10 for American League teams. Additionally, you will check the DH may beused checkbox for American League Teams.

ScorePAD note: If you are in a youth league that allows more than nineplayers to bat, rather than using DH we recommend that you select none forposition for all players that are in the lineup but are not playing defense.

Standings and games from first

ScorePAD allows you to set standings before or after the game is complete. Itwill display in Game Totals of the Team Stats view. The range of standings isfrom 1st place to 30th place in the league. Check the Tied box if there is aretwo teams tied for the same position in the standings. Games from 1st can beused to show how many games ahead the team is of the next team in thestandings or how many games the team is behind the league leader.

Scheduled innings

You can set the number of scheduled innings for each game between 3 and 12.When the players have completed that number of innings without a tie,ScorePAD will automatically mark the game as complete. ScorePAD willprompt you to set the game's End Time after the last out of the last scheduledinning or after the winning run scores in bottom of the last scheduled or anyextra inning.

If you are using the International Tie-Breaker Rule (ITR), and the game is tied atthe end of the last scheduled inning, ScorePAD will automatically implement theITR placing a runner on second at the beginning of each half inning.

If you neglected to set the Scheduled Innings value to the correct number ofinnings and ScorePAD prematurely ends a game, you can change the ScheduleInnings value, set the End Time of the game to "In Progress" and resumescoring.

Game type

You can set the game type to any of 13 descriptions. This will allow the

Page 37: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

37

ScorePAD Desktop to compile statistics by game type. The Game Type param-eter will default to Season. The different games types to choose from are:

SeasonPre-seasonDivision seriesLeague championshipWorld championshipDistrict tournamentSub-state tournamentState tournamentRegional tournamentNational tournamentExhibitionScrimmageTournament

Series number

The Series number identifies a game as belonging to a specific series of gamesbetween two teams. Selecting an ID for each series will allow ScorePAD tocompile series-oriented statistics.

DH may be used checkbox

When a team uses a designated hitter (DH) that hitter bats in the place of adefensive player. In Major League Baseball that player is always the pitcher.Whenever either team in a game uses a DH, check this box and place thedefensive player for which the DH bats in the last lineup slot. This will allowScorePAD to gather defensive statistics for that player without placing him orher in the batting order.

When you have checked this checkbox, a lineup slot will appear at the end ofthe score card with no at-bat squares adjacent to it. You do not have to assigna DH when this box is checked.

Initial count

In some softball tournaments, each batter comes to the plate with an initialcount. ScorePAD allows you to set the initial count to any of the followingcounts:

Page 38: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

38 ScorePAD Handbook

0 Balls, 0 Strikes1 Ball, 1 Strike2 Balls, 2 Strikes3 Balls, 2 Strikes

ScorePAD adds balls and strikes to bring each batter that comes to the plate tothat initial count. You can change the initial count at any point during the gameby returning to the Game Parameters dialog.

Copy to handheld

If you have ScorePAD PDA software this check box allows you to Hotsync thegame to your PDA.

ScorePAD Note: Games can moved back and forth between a PDA andcomputer. You can start a game on your PDA, Hotsync it unfinished to yourcomputer and complete the game in Game Scoring view on your desktop orvice versa.

Scoring the GameCreating the starting lineup

ScorePAD automatically loads the rosters of the teams you select in the GameSetup view. In the Game Scoring view you will select the lineups for each team.

If you have saved a starting lineup for either of the current teams, the last savedlineup will automatically appear.

To select lineups you must:

1. Select the team2. Select a batting order3. Select a defensive position for each player

Selecting players

Click on lineup position

Tap player in list

Player appears in batting slot

To select a player when RosterPAD players have been pre-entered:

1. Click on the batting slot you wish to change.2. A list box will appear with the names of all players entered for that team.

The player list box will show position players first, then pitchers. Each list isin alphabetical order.

3. Select the name of the player you wish to place.

Once you have selected a player for each slot in the batting order, the lineup isalmost complete.

If you have not entered players for the selected team into RosterPAD, theLineup view will appear whenever you select a player position.

Page 41: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

41

An alternative way to enter lineups is by selecting Starting lineups from theLineup menu.

Starting Lineup

Enter the player number, name, and position by clicking in the appropriate areaand typing in the information.

If players are already entered into RosterPAD, then enter the player number, tabto the player last name column and it automatically grabs their informationfrom the Roster view and fills out the name and position fields. This is a quickway of entering the lineup when you know all the player numbers.

Moving players around in the lineup

Left click player to move Drag to destination slot Lift up

The lineup box provides a graphical interface for moving players around in thelineup. This operation is very useful for minor batting order changes thatoccur from day to day. You can only move a batter if that batter and all batters

Page 42: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

42 ScorePAD Handbook

between that batter and the destination slot have no plate appearances or theoriginating and destination batters have no plate appearances.

After all players have batted, you can still use this function if the starting slotand destination slot batter have not completed plate appearances. In the caseof two or more players entering the game at the same time, you can use straightsubstitution until one of the players come to the plate. Then you can swapplayers in the batting order until you arrive at the correct batting order of thenew players.

To change a players batting slot:

1. Left click on the players name.2. While holding down your mouse, slide the player to the destination batting

slot. Batting slots will highlight and un-highlight as you move your mouseover them.

3. When the destination batting slot is highlighted, lift your mouse. The playerwill move to that batting slot.

Setting defensive positions

Finally, you must set the defensive positions of your lineup. ScorePAD makesthis task just as easy as setting the lineup. Touch the box to the right of player'sname. A list box will appear with all defensive positions recognized by Score-PAD. Select the correct defense position and you are done. You should haveone and only one pitcher per lineup. If no pitcher is selected pitching statisticsare credited to Unknown Pitcher.

When you have selected defensive positions for each player, you have com-pleted the starting lineup. You can also set the lineup and defensive positionsby selecting Starting Lineup of the Lineup menu.

Creating lineup without RosterPAD data

In some cases, (e.g. tournaments) you do not have rosters for opposing teams. In these cases you can use Starting Lineup from the Lineup menu to createand edit ScorePAD lineups.

To enter the Staring Lineup, select Starting Lineup from the Lineup menu ofthe Game Scoring view.

You must enter player numbers for each player in the lineup. Last name, firstname, and position are optional. If you enter a player number and RosterPADhas team data, the Lineup view will automatically fill the name and position

Page 43: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

43

fields. Once you add a player he/she will automatically be added to RosterPAD.

Saving the starting lineup

If you have scored professional baseball games, you have probably recognizedthat starting lineups do not change very much from game to game. ScorePADgives you the benefit of saving the starting lineup for a given game to use forthe next game you score.

To save the starting lineup:

1. Select Save Lineup from the File menu.2. ScorePAD will prompt you to save either or both of the teams' lineups.3. Select the lineup(s) you want to save

ScorePAD will update your RosterPAD database with the defensive positionand batting slot of each starting player for the team(s) you select. If any of theplayers do not exist in RosterPAD's database, ScorePAD will add them.

Having a complete lineup

When you have completed the starting lineup, it will show each player'snumber and defensive position. It also displays season batting average, homeruns and runs batted in. Since you have not begun scoring the game, the in-game statistics section will be blank.

Player substitution

As each team substitutes players, you must make changes to your score card toreflect those substitutions. Changes in the lineup take place in two forms;straight and double switch.

Page 44: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

44 ScorePAD Handbook

Straight substitution

In a straight substitution, one or more players enter the game in the samebatting order and defensive positions as the players they replaced.

Double switch substitution

In a double switch, two or more players enter the game in different defensivepositions than the players they replaced in the batting order. For instance, acoach might bring in a new pitcher and a left fielder. In a double switch heplaces the left-fielder in the current pitcher's batting slot and the pitcher in thecurrent left-fielder's batting slot.

In Major League Baseball a coach usually decides to perform a double switchwhen the pitcher is scheduled to have an at-bat in the next inning but thecoach wants a better hitter to bat in that spot instead.

With ScorePAD you can substitute any player for any other player. ScorePADmaintains statistics for all players that participate in a game whether starting orsubstitutes.

Substitution flexibility

If a double switch occurs in a game and you are not sure of the batting orderassignments of the players that entered the game, you can perform a straightsubstitution and change the batting order as the substituted players come tothe plate. To change the order as the players come to the plate, you must usethe Game Scoring view's drag-and-drop capability to swap the batting orderpositions of any of the players that have not come to the plate. (See Movingplayers around the lineup.)

The defensive field graphic also offers flexibility in moving players amongdefensive positions. If you assign players to the wrong positions or playerschange positions, you can use the defensive field graphic to make correctionsor position changes. The defensive field graphic uses a drag-and-drop interfaceto assign players to defensive positions or move players among defensivepositions.

Missed substitutions

If you miss a substitution some time during the game you can easily correct themistake. Replace the player you want to substitute for from the Game Scoringview with the missed player. Select Missed sub from the prompt and from the

We have made most scoring actions available in this at-bat square. Thisrepresents a single square on the typical score sheet. However, it also displaysgame status including graphic indicators for each base runner during thecurrent at-bat. As you finish scoring an at-bat, ScorePAD calculates newstatistics and moves to the next logical batter. ScorePAD continues to move tothe next batter in the batting order until three outs are recorded.

As the teams switch between offense and defense, ScorePAD keeps track of thebatting order and automatically presents you with the proper player for theupcoming at-bat. ScorePAD also recognizes when the last batter of the lastinning should return to the plate in the next inning. This happens when his at-bat is interrupted by a teammate making the third out before his at-bat iscomplete (for example, caught stealing, picked-off, etc.)

Pitch buttons

Along the right side of the at-bat square you will notice buttons: Ball, Strike,

Visual cues increase your enjoyment of the game as you score. They show thegame/at-bat status at a glance thereby increasing the time you spend actuallywatching the game. ScorePAD automatically generates these graphical indica-tors with the exception of some ball put in-play destinations.

Scoring procedure

In ScorePAD, a game is simply the aggregate of all of its at-bats. ScorePAD at-bats contain:

PitcherPitch sequencePitch resultsOn-base and/or out reasonsDestination of ball put in playBase advance reasons and playersPitch detail

Page 55: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

Recording pitches

Since you will spend a great deal of time watching and recording balls andstrikes, we make this operation simple and flexible. Either click on one of thepitch buttons in the Game Scoring view (Ball, Strike, Foul, POA, N) or clickon the balls and strikes boxes displayed on the top right hand side of the at-batsquare.

or click on the area that graphically displays balls and strike

The No Pitch

ScorePAD allows you to record a No Pitch by selecting the N button. Fortu-nately, this rarely occurs. A no pitch happens when the pitcher attempts apitch and for some reason, either the batter asked for time-out, the umpire wasnot ready, something or someone interfered, or for some other reason, theumpire calls "No pitch," and throws his hands up and forward. The pitch stilladds to the pitch count but is not called a ball or a strike.

Advancing base runners

When you select an on-base result, the On Base button disappears and theAdvance button appears. After clicking on the Advance button, select theproper advance reason from the list. Advance reasons such as batter advancewill prompt you for more information. If runners are on-base, ScorePAD willprompt you to advance those runners unless the advance of runners on-base isautomatic.

You can also move a baserunner through prompts created by ScorePAD.Simply select the base the runner now occupies or use the selections below totake care of all baserunners at once or to throw a baserunner out at a specificbase.

Advancing Runners

Drag and drop base advances (preferred method)

While you record the at-bat of current batter ( the batter now at the plate,)

Page 58: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

58 ScorePAD Handbook

you can use the Drag-and-Drop runner advance feature.

Drag-and-drop base advances will not work in some cases if the current batter hasreached base.

To use Drag and drop, complete the following steps:

1. Left click your mouse on any occupied base and drag from that base to thedestination base for that runner. The base will highlight when you havedragged far enough.

2. Let up on your mouse. ScorePAD will display a list box of Advance types.

3. Select the appropriate advance type.

Click down, hold andLeft Click Runner drag mouse to new base Select advance reason

You can also double click on any occupied base to move to that at-bat screen.

1. Once you are at the runner's at-bat screen, select the Advance button.

2. Select the appropriate advance type.

3. ScorePAD will prompt you for the destination base for that runner. Selectthe destination base.

4. Once you have completed work on that at-bat, click on the double arrowand ScorePAD will take you back to the current at-bat.

Page 59: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

59

Note: Drag-and-drop runner advances were designed as a convenience.During an at-bat, if a runner steals a base or advances on a wild pitch, passedball, etc., you can use drag-and-drop.

Recording an out

The at-bat square of the Game Scoring view allows you to record outs fivedifferent ways.

When you are keeping pitches and record a total of three strikes, theat-bat square assumes that the batter struck out.

Whether a batter has reached base or not, you may touch the Outbutton at the bottom right of the at-bat square and select an outresult. The out result list also contains Strikeout so you can selectStrikeout from the list if you do not wish to touch strike three times.

You can type in the result in the Command box just below the at-batsquare using baseball scoring shorthand. For example, writing "63"and the GO button represents a grounder to shortstop thrown to firstfor the putout. "F8 and the GO button" would be a flyout to centerfield. (ScorePAD's preferred method)

You can use the hot buttons listed below the at-bat square to recordthe result. For example, using your mouse to select "63" represents agrounder to shortstop thrown to first for the putout. Using the smallfield diagram below to select "8" while the "Flyout" button is selectedwill result in "F8," a flyout to centerfield. This one touch methodmakes scoring fast and easy.

When runners are on base, you may right click your mouse on therunner. When the list of out on-base out results appears, select theproper out type and record the defensive positions that assisted orperformed the putout.

Defensive Positions

Some outs will require that you enter the defensive positions that assisted in orcompleted the putout. The Defensive Positions dialog will appear when the at-bat needs that information.

Page 60: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

60 ScorePAD Handbook

Defensive Positions Finish Fielders

The Defensive Positions dialog shows the defensive positions by their positionnames. To record defensive positions, click on each position that assisted in orcompleted the putout. As you select a defensive position button, the positionnumber for the position button you choose appears on the edit line on thebottom-left of this dialog. The Cancel Out button will appear until you enterdefensive positions. Once you enter defensive positions, the Cancel Outbutton will change to Finish Fielders. When you finish entering defensivepositions, select Finish Fielders.

If you make a mistake, select the Undo button to erase that entry. If you wantto cancel the out after you have entered one or more defensive positions, clickon the Undo button until Cancel Out reappears. Finally, select the CancelOut button.

Base running outs

If the current batter has not completed his at-bat:

1. Right click your mouse on the shaded base of the baserunner until a list ofouts appears.

2. Select the out type for the runner.

Page 61: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

Add at-bat to inning

ScorePAD allows you to add an at-bat to the inning.

Delete last at-bat in inning

ScorePAD allows you to delete the last at-bat in the inning.

Skip at-bat

ScorePAD allows you to skip a batter. In games that use free substitution rules, players might leave the game leaving nine or more players in the lineup. Sinceyou cannot reduce the size of the lineup once you have gone through theentire lineup, ScorePAD allows you to skip that player's at-bat and score thenext batter.

In cases where the team has eight batters, the ninth batter would probably notbe skipped but counted as an out. In these cases, don't use Skip at-bat. Givethat batter an out.

Clear at-bat

With Clear at-bat you can erase all of the events of an at-bat. This commandquickly removes all pitches, base advances, reaches, outs, and hit location.

Switching sides

When you click on the double-right arrow button, ScorePAD moves to thenext logical batter based on the game situation. After three outs, ScorePAD willmove to the first logical batter on the opposing team.

In the case of maximum run rules or even the mutual agreement of the coachesand umpires, teams may switch sides in situations where there are less thanthree outs. In these situations, use the Switch Sides menu command. Thiscommand causes ScorePAD to immediately move to the next logical batter ofthe opposing team.

Previous at-bat

With Previous at-bat you can go back to the prior at-bat and view the result ofthe play.

Next at-bat

With Next at-bat you can move to the next logical batter after moving back toview results of previous plays.

With Current at-bat you can move to the current at-bat of the inning you arein.

NOTE -- you can also use the green front and back arrow key hot buttons (<)(>) (>>) to perform most of these functions.

Advanced scoring - Keyboard abbreviations

Once you become an official expert baseball scorer (if you are not already),you can use ScorePAD abbreviations to score at-bats. You must use theCommand window to enter these abbreviations. ScorePAD recognizes abbre-viations to speed up scoring for those familiar with baseball. Scoring this wayfeels nearly equal to scoring with paper. After typing in the scoring abbrevia-tion hit enter on your keyboard or click on the GO button. Below is a partial

Frequently AskedQuestions

Page 141: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

141

Frequently Asked Questions

“How do I setup a 7-inning game instead of the normal 9-innings?”

You can set the number of scheduled innings for each game between 3 and 12by going into Parameters from the Game Setup option. When the playershave completed that number of innings without a tie, ScorePAD will automati-cally mark the game as complete. ScorePAD will prompt you to set the game'sEnd Time after the last out of the last scheduled inning or after the winning runscores in bottom of the last scheduled or any extra inning.

If you neglected to set the Scheduled Innings value to the correct number ofinnings and ScorePAD prematurely ends a game, you can change the ScheduleInnings value, set the End Time of the game to "In Progress" and resumescoring.

“How do I setup the International Tie-Breaker Rule?”

If you are using the International Tie-Breaker Rule (ITR), and the game is tied atthe end of the last scheduled inning, ScorePAD will automatically implement theITR placing a runner on second at the beginning of each half inning. In the Game Scoring View, click the Edit button. Under Preferences, check the “Int’l tie-breaker” box. Once this box is selected, ScorePAD willimplement this rule every half inning until an inning completes without a tiescore. You can turn this preference on or off at any time.

“In our league, the batters begin each at bat with 1 ball and 1 strike. Can I setup ScorePAD to automatically register that count?”

In some softball tournaments, each batter comes to the plate with an initialcount. Under the Edit menu from the Game Scoring View, go to GameSetup and Parameters. ScorePAD allows you to set the initial count to anyof the following counts:

0 Balls, 0 Strikes1 Ball, 1 Strike2 Balls, 2 Strikes3 Balls, 2 Strikes

ScorePAD adds balls and strikes to bring each batter that comes to the plate tothat initial count. You can change the initial count at any point during the gameby returning to the Game Parameters dialog.

Page 142: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

142 ScorePAD Handbook

“Will ScorePAD allow a team to bat more than 9 players?”

Yes. ScorePAD allows up to 18 lineup players per team. Of course, this is notthe roster size, which can be up to 60 players; the number of lineup players isthe size of the batting order. This parameter can be set separately for eachteam in the game. The home team might have 10 lineup players while thevisiting team has 12 lineup players. This feature is designed for youth baseballteams that allow everyone on the team to be a part of the batting order whileonly 9 players have defensive positions. Go to the Game Setup page andclick Parameters.

“My team uses a designated hitter. How do I setup the lineup with aDH?”

When a team uses designated hitter (DH) that hitter bats in the place of adefensive player. In Major League Baseball that player is always the pitcher.Whenever either team in a game uses a DH, check this box and place thedefensive player for which the DH bats in the last lineup slot. This will allowScorePAD to gather defensive statistics for that player without placing him orher in the batting order.

Under the Edit menu from the Game Scoring View, go to Game Setup andParameters. Set the players for each team to 10 and then click inside thecheckbox that says DH may be used. When you have checked this checkbox, alineup slot will appear at the end of the score card with no at-bat squaresadjacent to it. You don't have to assign a DH when this box is checked.

“What is a ‘No Pitch’ and how do I record it?”

ScorePAD allows you to record a No Pitch by touching the N button.

“How do I charge a dropped foul error?”

When a batter's at-bat is extended due to an error in foul territory you canselect the Dropped foul error by clicking on the hot button on the lowerright hand screen of the Game Scoring View. Then select the defensiveposition charged with the error and follow the prompts to complete the play.

Page 143: Desktop scoring version - ScorePAD Baseball

143

“How do I switch sides if the team has recorded less than threeouts?

When you press the > button, ScorePAD moves to the next logical batterbased on the game situation. After three outs, ScorePAD will move to the firstlogical batter on the opposing team.

In the case of maximum run rules or even the mutual agreement of the coachesand umpires, teams may switch sides in situations where there are less thanthree outs. In these situations, use the Switch sides command under the At-bat menu. This Game Scoring view menu command causes ScorePAD toimmediately move to the next logical batter of the opposing team.

“How do I skip an at-bat?”

To use this function go to the At-bat menu on the Game Scoring page andselect Skip at-bat.

In cases where the team has eight batters, the ninth batter would probably notbe skipped but counted as an out. In these cases, do not use Skip At-bat. Givethat batter an out.

“Does ScorePAD handle the softball short fielder and extra hitterpositions?”

Yes. ScorePAD provides a preference to include Short Fielder in its DefensivePositions Dialog. You should use short fielder as the defensive position of thefourth outfield position even when using the left-center and right-center outfieldarrangements. You can simply have that player in the lineup without a positionlisted. This will allow them to participate offensively without accumulatingdefensive statistics.
