The Master’s Word
W.M. Steve Wilson
Greetings from the East, I hope everyone’s New Year is going well and all are ready for a year of fun
and fellowship. I would like to thank all who attended the officer installation and those who helped
make it a very special day. Thank you to the installation team, Honorable Greg Wynn, Rite Worship-
ful Frank Lowe and Worshipful Tom Robinson. A special thanks to my wife Michelle for making the
programs and decoration. As we begin the year it is hoped that attendance at our Degrees will be
well attended. We tell all potential brothers the importance of becoming a Mason, they join and upon
receiving the E.A. or fellow craft degree they look around the Lodge room and see only a few broth-
ers in attendance. What message does this send to our newly obligated brother? The brothers of the
degree team work hard and put in many hours of practice to ensure our candidates are off to a good
start. Your attendance reinforces what we have told them and aspires them to increase their masonic
knowledge. Please come out and support our new Candidates and Desoto Lodge. We look forward to
seeing you.
Fraternally and Sincerely
Steve Wilson

From the West
S.W. Bill Miller
To the Brothers, Sisters, Friends and Family;
January I cancelled the workday as the DDGM called a meeting with the WM and wardens in this district. It was a
well-attended meeting and Desoto Officers and Past Masters well represented Desoto Lodge. The DDGM put out
some good information and guidance for the upcoming year.
By the February Work-Day, I will have a list of things I believe we need to have done and will have discussed it with
the WM and Officers of the lodge so we can set some priorities. One thing we will do this year is paint the outside of
the building. If you have looked close there will be lot of prep work before we put paint on. There are 5 sponsors
right now willing to pay for a 5-gallon bucket of paint to do the outside when we start. I am hoping for a few more as
we need to put some primer down before the paint and the eves need to be addressed as well.
A number of you have talked about an offer to take on some other self-help like projects in the Lodge and this is a
great way to get things done. Please keep up the ideas and the offers, once we approve a budget we will be able to
address some of those.
If you have a talent that could help with building maintenance, please let me know at a meeting or send me an email,
with your contact information and the skills you can help with. I would like to build an internal list for the SW and
WM to use to address items in the lodge.
You often hear people say “I Am the Church” or “I Am the Lodge” this is an interesting concept in both cases as the
lodge and the church have something in common, in that they can be the buildings or the members. While their mis-
sions and social agendas are different they are both a Society of Friends with a common goal and direction. Freema-
sonry is one of the oldest if not the oldest Fraternity, in the world. Please remember some of the basics of ours, Fel-
lowship, Family, Support for Brothers and Widows.
For those that Have not seen it, Past Master Tracy was mentioned in an article in the “Observer” paper for the Wid-
ows luncheon he put together and for finding “Pouty” who was lost and now is currently on display in the dining ar-
ea.
“Can you find him?”

From the South
J.W. Steve Williams
Fraternal Greetings from the South,
It’s been a busy month in the kitchen. I would like to take a moment to thank all the Brothers who
helped in the kitchen on the first meeting Brothers Steve Robb, Ed Suttles, Jeff Deaton and of course the
lovely Roni-Kay. I would also like to thank the young men from the Walter Fishback Chapter of DeMo-
lay Master Counselor Cooper McKinley, JP Green, David Puzzo and James Cooksey who did the heavy
lifting with cleaning up. The help and support from the all Brothers and Sisters as well as the DeMolay
has been overwhelming. Brother David Puzzo and I have discussed his boys taking over one meal this
year and they are eagerly awaiting a date.
Each month my goal is to inform the Brothers, family and friends of DeSoto of the upcoming meals for
the month. This month is no different for our 1st stated meeting “guys night” on February 2nd 2016 our
Worshipful Master has asked for chicken so I meal planned accordingly. We are going to have Alice
Springs Chicken, rice pilaf, Caesar salad, and ambrosia salad for dessert. For February 16th 2016 “Family
Night” we are going to have Spanish pork, black beans, yellow rice, Cuban bread and pineapple upside
down cake for dessert. February 23rd is an EA Degree and we will be having our traditional beanie wee-
nies with a twist, potato salad and dessert and lastly for our special item of the month at pancake break-
fast to honor of Valentines we will have red velvet muffins with cream cheese icing.
Thank you again for all the support and effort this year in helping me in the kitchen I could not do it
without you.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
By Bill Bartman
IT’S FEBRUARY: PRESIDENTS AND LOVE
This February is a “leap-year,” meaning we get to enjoy 29 days instead of 28. Although it is our shortest
month, it is still a very special month. We celebrate the birthdays of Presidents George Washington (a Mason) and
Abraham Lincoln, and the 14th is St. Valentine’s Day; a day when we especially show our love to others.
The Holy Bible uses four Greek words for love: Agape, Storge, Phileo, and Eros. Love is one of the major
tenets of our fraternity, so let’s take a look at these. I am going to skip Eros, because that is translated erotic, and
is sensual love. I’ll leave that one up to you to define. Agape love is the love that Almighty God showers upon us. It is unconditional love that knows no bounda-
ries; and is often a “one-way love.” He loves us without expecting anything in return. Saint John the Apostle used
that form of love when he wrote in his gospel, “For God so loved (agape) the world that He gave His only begotten
Son, ...” (3:16) This level of love is very sincere and is very rare. Sometimes, it is shown in a mother’s love. Think
about it. No matter how badly you messed up, your mother was always there, ready to hug you, give you some
encouragement, and forgive you, NO MATTER WHAT! Such love is to be cherished and never taken for granted.
It is the level of love where you will give your life, if necessary, for that person.
Storge love is family relationships and obligations. Phileo love is “Brotherly Love.” (Philadelphia is the “City of Brotherly Love.”) Brotherly love is good, whole-
some love that people have for each other, and it’s the very level of love that we ascribe to in our fraternity. It in-
volves a very close relationship with one another, offering support and encouragement all the time. Saint John the
Apostle also quotes Jesus as He spoke to His disciples, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love (phileo)
one another; ...” (15:12) We are actually commanded to love one another. Wow! There you have it: the eleventh
commandment.
The Bible is full of things about love...here are just a few: Love casts out fear; Love heals broken hearts;
Love restores broken relationships; and Love heaps hot coals on the heads of our enemies. Red Skelton said, “I
love everybody; even my enemies. And I should love my enemies, ‘cause I made ‘em.” When you buy a Valentine’s Day gift for your loved one this month, I hope you include more than just a card
or note to express your love for that special person. Show her how important she is to you, how much you love
her, and how you appreciate her love for you also. No matter how you look at it, love is not a noun; it’s more than
just a feeling. It is a verb – an action! “What you do speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you’re saying!” So, don’t
just write and speak about your love, show it.
Brotherly love is extremely important to a Mason. Demonstrating it on a regular basis toward others is a
true sign of a good man getting better and better.

The Order of Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons was first es-tablished in London in 1717. Despite tracing their historical roots to the first mason of the Temple of Solomon, the masons of the eighteenth century had little to do with the profession of architec-ture or masonry. Founded for the purpose of gathering political, cultural, and intellectual elites within a single fraternity, freema-sonry evolved into a prominent organization in the eighteenth century and made its way to Britain's American colonies some-time shortly thereafter.1 The all-male organization had rich con-nections to the British Enlightenment, as its associated chapters, or lodges, became famous for closed meetings that included many of the most prominent thinkers in the British Atlantic world.
Although American elites initially joined the Freemasons with the intention of mimicking English genteel behavior, the organi-zation ultimately contributed to the development of the American Revolution. During the revolutionary era, masons of note includ-ed George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Richard Henry Lee, John Hancock, and James Madison. These men and other leading revolutionaries used ma-sonic lodges as gathering places to discuss the relevant issues of the day, network with likeminded individuals, and plan resistance against unpopular British policies.2
Washington entered the Order of the Freemasons in October 1752 at the age of 20. Upon joining the Fredericks-burg Lodge No. 4 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Washington became a member alongside a number of influential Vir-ginians, including the militia officers Hugh Mercer, George Weedon, and Thomas Posey. Many of Washington’s brothers in the Fredericksburg Lodge later served beside him in the Continental Army.3
Beginning in 1782 and continuing through the remainder of his life, Washington kept an active correspondence with various other Masonic lodges and brothers. On August 10, 1782, for example, Washington happily received a Masonic apron as a gift from the firm of Watson and Cassoul.4 Washington responded with a note of gracious thanks, writing, "For your affectionate Vows, permit me to be grateful and offer mine for true Brothers in all parts of the world."5
In 1783, at the close of the Revolutionary War, a masonic lodge in Alexandria, Virginia was chartered. The new lodge asked General Washington to be its first Master. Washington, in support of the organization and its proximity to his home at Mount Vernon, accepted the position and became Master of the newly formed Alexandria Lodge No. 22.6
After the war, freemasonry remained important to Washington, as evidenced by its prominent role in his first presi-dential inauguration on April 30, 1789. In taking the oath of office, Washington used the Bible of the St. John's Ma-sonic Lodge No. 1 of New York. Robert Livingston, the Chancellor of New York and a prominent mason, adminis-tered the oath.7

In 1794, Washington agreed to sit for a portrait commissioned by his Alexandria Lodge No. 22 for specific use by his fellow Freemasons. Joseph Williams painted the portrait of Washington dressed in full Masonic regalia. In 1805, the lodge renamed itself the Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 in honor of the late president.
The Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 bought a plot of land in Alexandria in 1909 for the purpose of creating a memorial to Washington as a Freemason. In recognition of Freemasonry's connection to the architectural professions, the lodge chose a design similar to the Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, one of the original Seven Wonders of the World.8 The George Washington Masonic Memorial houses the Masonic painting of George Washington as well as the Masonic apron that was the subject of his 1782 letter. Today, the Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 holds its meetings at the memorial while welcoming visitors and other organizations in the city of Alexandria to use the ornate space.

Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed on Feb-ruary 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.
St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyr-ologies. A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An em-bellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. Today, Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church.
The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to un-lock the giver’s heart", as well as to children, in order to ward off Saint Valentine's Malady. Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th centu-ry, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. Source: Wikipedia.com

The Deputy Darlin's charity provides Christmas gifts for needy families throughout south east Hillsborough County. In addition to the toys collected during the December pancake breakfast, we received cash donations that went to this worth-while charity.
