The oak for this tabletop came from the Danish Royal Forests. These trees were planted just after the Napoleonic Wars for use as shipbuilding timber and those forests have been continuously maintained since. Two full 53-foot long containers of the timber were sawn specifically for the restoration of the fishing schooner “Adventure”, which is a National Historic Landmark, located in Gloucester, MA. These containers were shipped from Denmark via Iceland to Gloucester. This particular piece was an offcut from a plank that was initially 30-35 feet long and would have been used near or above the deck level. The curved shape is a result of the live edge being sawn off prior to laying out. The cherry for the sculpted bases was cut locally. Landmark students Harry Zakarian, Devin Newell and Connor Trulli made the table and Vince Van Poucke carved the boat silhouette into the tabletop. The carving is of the “Blue Moon” designed by Thomas Gillmer in 1946. Most of the work waof building and finishing this piece was done by hand. The “Blue Moon” table is a stunning and one of a kind piece -– a unique example of Landmark artistry. Generously donated by Landmark School Wood-working shop, Paul Schwartz, teacher.
