New online system aimed at transforming the way agents book wedding venuesBOOKYOURWEDDINGDAY.COM, WHICH is due to launch this month, is the first international online booking system thatallows operators, travel agents and wedding planners to secure confirmed overseas wedding dates and venues instantly. The platform will initially be launched to showcase wedding venues in Cyprus and Greece, with other destinations being

added throughout the year. The new platform offers agents additional selling power; previously agents would have to contact a local counterpart,

who in turn had to consult the local municipality and communicate back to the UK – a process that could take up to sixweeks. Now, agents can log on to browse destinations, choose the preferred venue and view availability over a three-weekperiod around the ideal date. Each venue will also list available time slots for ceremonies, which are synchronised with thelocal town hall’s calendar.Once details have been selected, agents can make the online booking (using any credit card) to pay a £100 booking fee,

which secures the venue, date and time selected. A confirmation email will then be sent during the sign-up process whichallows travel agents to proceed with other arrangements, such as booking flights, accommodation and packages. For further information email [email protected]

IDON’T KNOW where to start! A 16-year old Chinese boy was found stowed away on anEmirates flight from Shanghai to Dubai, seeking to

make his fortune saying even beggars in Dubai wererich. That could so easily have ended badly! It seemsto be desperate times all around – every day thepapers are full of stories of migrants trying to get intothe country. I really can’t see where this is going toend and there have been so many deaths already. What I found heartbreaking was that the beautiful

17 year old Silverback Gorilla Harambe shot by theCincinnati Zoo because parents didn’t keep an eye ontheir four year old! What a waste! I’m not surprisedthere is a huge backlash over this. I know I go onabout animals being abused especially by so calledplaces that are supposed to be looking after them – I have often said please don’t have pictures taken withtigers or go on elephant rides - and now thankfullytigers are being rescued from the Tiger Temple, a horrendous place where they found 40 tiger cubs ina freezer! This Temple near Bangkok is a touristdestination with visitors doing selfies with bottle fedcubs etc and it’s time these places were shut down. Itis a fact Thailand has long been a hub of illicittrafficking of wildlife and it has to stop otherwisetourists will stop visiting. As sellers of travel we dohave some responsibility to stop sending people tothese places and slowly make a difference. Now for some good news about Jet2Holidays.

Customers can make the most of their holidays withthe launch of its new service that will make it easierfor customers to check in for their return flight home. Now they can drop their bags off at their hotel beforethey go to the airport leaving extra time to enjoy theirhotel – this is being done at Tenerife, Majorca andCosta Blanca – sounds good to me. Also noticed theyare doing LBIA to Halkidiki in 2017 one of my favouritedestinations, yippee!'Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines'

IndustryInsightby...In great financial shape by Colin O’Neill, businessdevelopment director, Advantage

In business as in life, our ambitions are oftencurtailed by the level of financial spend availableand we are not always able to achieve all that we

would wish to.As an organisation, the Advantage Travel

Partnership has a delicate balance to achieve; onthe one hand we need to create wealth and profit forthe business to ensure that we always operate on a very sound footing. However, as we are a memberowned company, we need to ensure that the profitgenerated is translated into member benefit. Thereis really little point in building central profit for thesake of it as this is fundamentally opposed to thevalues of the organisation. At the end of May we released our consolidated

report and accounts for the financial year endingSeptember 30, 2015 and not only are we very happywith the overall results, we are particularly pleasedwith the strong balance we have struck betweenprofit and the value of the central activityundertaken.Whilst the profit after tax figure of £495k is the

headline number that many observers will focusattention on, if I am being honest, the figures thatgives us greater cause for satisfaction are some ofthe other key performance indicators that sit belowthat headline number. In many ways the most telling number is the

increase that we have made to the average value ofthe member benefit statement. If you recall, weprovide each member with an annual benefitstatement which is tailored to each individualbusiness. We calculate the specific financial benefitsour members have received during the year and bytaking off their membership fees, we are able todetermine the net benefit received from theirmembership. We are also quite clear that if we arenot able to specifically measure the value, it doesn’tget included on the statement. In the last financialyear, we were able to grow the average value by 17%which demonstrates that the activities that weundertook during the year were benefitting

members on an individual as well as on a collectivebasis. Some of the contributing factors to the increase in

the overall value include:A 13% improvement on the incremental earnings

members can derive from the business incentiveswe have negotiated with our preferred leisurebusiness partners.A focused direct marketing campaign of activity, in

addition to the monthly promotional campaigns, which has resulted in 5k new holiday bookings forthose members participating in the activity. The strength that we have in the corporate sector

of the market where we have exploited our positionas a top four performer with 25 leading airlines todrive sales in excess of £750m and 2.2m roomnights in association with our international businesspartners. Finally, our business consultancy team have been

able to get much closer to our members and theirbusinesses, to better understand the aspirations ofthe business and to tailor the central offering tomeet those needs. As I mentioned earlier, thebenefit statement is specific to each individualmember and the approach taken by our businessdevelopment consultants is consistent with thattailoring. But that was our performance last year and we

are already half way through the new financial year.As you would expect, our approach to sharingcentral wealth very much remains in the same and,in some ways, we have taken it up a notch. Asreported at the 2016 Advantage Conference, thetechnological investment we are making in thedevelopment of Gateway 2 and Advantage Holidaysare specifically designed to invest in activities thatwill benefit the overall membership, regardless ofsize, business discipline or product profile. As a business, we have ambitious goals forAdvantage and I am pleased to say we confident thatwe have the financial strength to make thembecome a reality.

Throughout 2016, the state ofAlaska has enjoyed a starringrole. Not only has the

magnificent Alaskan scenery recentlybeen featured on BBC wildlife series‘Nature’s Epic Journeys’, witnessingthe migration of thousands of cariboustreaming from Alaska into Canadaduring their spring migration, butwithin the travel industry, Alaskawelcomed more than 700 delegates toits largest city, Anchorage, for the GoWest Summit in February and morerecently hosted a group of ten UKtravel agents as part of the Brand USA megafam.

Tourism to the state continues torise, and the latest annual visitorstatistics report published in February2016 shows that tourism to Alaska isat a record high with visitor volumes atthe highest point since tracking beganin 1985. For summer 2015, Alaskawelcomed 1,780,000 out-of-statevisitors, representing a 7% year-on-year increase.

Wild wondersWhether admiring magnificentgrizzlies roaming around untamedlandscapes, observing herds ofcaribou migrating across the tundra orspotting puffins, sea lions and ottersfrom the deck of an expedition cruiseship, Alaska is like nowhere else.

Being Alaskan, I am very proud thatAlaska has multiple superlatives to itsname; the highest peak in NorthAmerica, the largest national park, thegreatest concentration of glaciers andthe busiest seaplane base to namejust a few.

Although Klondike Gold RushNational Historical Park is the mostvisited national park in the state with850,000 visitors, the largest is

Wrangell-St. Elias at more than 13.2million acres (20,000 square miles). Itis so large in fact that it could fitSwitzerland and Yellowstone andYosemite National Parks within itsborders stretching from Mount St.Elias to the ocean. The magnificentscenery and untamed nature of thispark allows visitors to experiencegenuine ‘Wild Alaska’ and there arenot many places on earth that offerthis level of unspoilt wilderness.

Access Alaska From the UK, Alaska is now closerthan most people think. The quickestroute is with Icelandair now flying toAnchorage, Alaska (via Reykjavik) outof six UK gateways - Heathrow,Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow,Edinburgh and Aberdeen. This meansthat UK visitors can now travel toAlaska in less than 12 hours.

For those opting to take a cruise, departures are available from Seattleor Vancouver with popular stopsincluding Ketchikan, Skagway andJuneau (Alaska’s capital and thegateway to Glacier Bay National Park).

A number of multi-day and daycruises are also available withdeparture points in Alaska such asfrom Seward, offering direct access tothe magnificent Kenai Fjords Nationalpark, or Whittier; the gateway toPrince William Sound - one of the bestplaces in Alaska to see spectacular coastal scenery andtidewater glaciers.

I always suggest maximising yourtime in Alaska and one of the bestways of doing this is to combine a cruise (or day cruise) with a landtour. In the last few years, the UKtravel industry has developed a rangeof new land tour packages to Alaska

including escorted touring, self-driveor a combination package - oftenincluding the Alaska Railroad and a flightseeing excursion which is anabsolute must for any visit.

UK agents can take their pick froma vast number of tours offered by ourUK trade facing partners includingTrek America, Grand AmericaAdventures, Prestige Holidays, Titan,Saga, Thomas Cook Signature,Holland America, Funway, TravelBag,Premier Holidays, Barrhead Travel,Cosmos, Kuoni, North America TravelService, Insight Vacations, TrafalgarTours and more.

In the pipelineBorn and raised in Fairbanks, I am a lifelong Alaskan and, throughout theyears, have enjoyed midnight sunhiking, biking and kayaking, and havetreated the state’s vast wilderness asmy own personal playground. I spendthe winter months cross-countryskiing through boreal forest coveredhills and over the frozen rivers ofInterior Alaska.

This autumn, Anchorage will also behosting the Adventure Travel WorldSummit, which takes place fromSeptember 19-22. Alaska is one of theworld’s top adventure destinations andthis is an exciting event bringingtogether a thriving community oftravel businesses from around theworld, and I hope to see some of ourUK partners there.

This month, I will be attending IPWin New Orleans together with our UKrepresentative, Kate McWilliams, sowe look forward to meeting the UKtour operator delegation at our booth.Do feel free to drop us a note if youare attending and would like to get intouch - [email protected]
