BUILDING A NEW HOME?

Building a new home is one of life’s most exciting milestones. But few things can ruin the occasion like defects that show up long after you’ve parted with your money. It doesn’t have to be this way. Work that is faulty and incomplete due to shoddy workmanship can be avoided if you stick with an accredited builder. The NHBRC was established by law to protect you, the housing consumer. Make sure you use a NHBRC registered builder and that your home is enrolled with us so that we can protect you.

Interview with Durban Interior Designer, Paige Waplington of Redesign interiors and products

In this age of cross-cultural pollination, Durban designer Paige Waplington is all for an organic meeting of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Her inspired interpretation of a trendy new aesthetic marries timeless Nordic-chic simplicity with the best of the Mother Continent’s creative assets. Here, the interior designer, whose fi rm Redesign Interiors & Products scooped the award for Best Interior Design for a Private Residence at last year’s prestigious African Property Awards (part of the long established International Property Awards), explains just what ‘Afro-Scandi’ style is and how she has used it to, literally, make an entrance at Decorex Durban.

Q: The clean lines and understated elegance of Scandinavian design have long been a decorator’s favourite and, of course, African animal prints, tribal motifs and tawny neutrals are currently hot, hot, hot. But marrying the two? Does it work?A: Absolutely! Scandinavian and African design actually have a lot in common, especially on the textile side. Both make liberal use of geometric and saturated nature-inspired prints. Flawless craftsmanship is, of course, another common denominator.

Q: Why have you, personally, fallen for the aesthetic?A: Well, aside from the fact that the combination suits my design style to a tee, I love each in its own right. Africa is a continent that holds my heart. She is dramatic, diverse and totally gorgeous, and she surprises me every day with her different kinds of beauty. Design-wise, I like to display my African connection through bold, abstract photography of her wildlife and natural beauty, while I use a variety of textures to represent her diversity. Scandinavian design, on the other hand, comes through in the clean-cut lines of Nordic furniture design and the simple collections and combinations of colours, which are a big component of my style. Plus, my favourite furniture manufacturer, Uber Haus in New Germany, KZN, is a Scandi-design devotee.

Q: We see your interpretation of the Afro-Scandi trend at Decorex Durban, as you have designed the

exhibition’s entrance feature. Can you tell us more about it?A: The theme of my installation is ‘Black is the New White’ and I have used contemporary Afro-Scandi elements, textures and patterns within a pair of facing interiors: one predominantly black and the other predominantly white. Black and white combinations are just so dramatic and, I think the juxtaposition sets a really theatrical tone for the show.

Q: That’s pretty fitting, given that the theme of this year’s show is ‘Decorex: Home of Great Ideas’. What kind of great ideas can visitors expect to take home with them from your stand?A: They’ll learn, for instance, that, when using one colour in an interior, it is very important to play with different textures, shades and scales. Also, when it comes to an all-white scheme, a useful trick is choosing your principal white and then to take the shades of white next to it on the swatch card and use them on different walls and in fabrics and accessories to add depth and interest. Yes, black tends to be a little trickier but, generally, the same principles apply.

Q: How would you describe your design philosophy?A: A belief that all design is individual. Just like a piece of art may resonate with one person and be detested by another, so a design will have both its lovers and its haters. There is just no point in having a beautiful interior that doesn’t speak to your soul.

kitchens are trending at decorex durban 2015

Page 17: Detail - Decorex Durban show journal 2015

| 15 | feature

2015’s biggest kitchen trends, not to mention the very latest state-of-the-art kitchen products and appliances, are on show at this year’s edition of Decorex Durban.

Sponsored by world-leading kitchen systems supplier Franke, the Franke ‘Make it Wonderful’ Kitchen Design Project promises a look at revolutionary developments in kitchen-design thinking, giving practical application to new directions in ergonomics, greening, space efficiency and more.

Endorsed by the Kitchen Specialists Association of South Africa (KSA), the expo’s must-see feature has Kwa-Zulu Natal’s top kitchen manufacturers showcasing four very unique kitchens, each fitted with products from Franke’s award-winning range. The stands will be judged by a panel of experts and the creator of the winning kitchen design will receive a prize of R10 000-worth of Franke products.

“What Decorex Durban continues to show us is that Kwa-Zulu Natal has immense talent capable of setting standards on a global design platform,” says Sian Gutstadt, General Manager of the Decorex SA Portfolio. “This collaboration with Franke Kitchen Systems encourages local kitchen designers to flaunt their skill, and ‘Make it Wonderful’ in the process.”

Franke SA’s Marketing Co-coordinator, Leigh-Anne Casey, explains further: “The ‘Make it Wonderful’ slogan

essentially refers to the founding principle of the Franke brand. By ‘wonderful’, we’re talking about that magic element that turns the everyday into the extraordinary, and, in the kitchen, that special ingredient that turns work into play and a house into a home.”

Stephanie Forbes, National Manager of the Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA) said the KSA was excited to be involved with Franke and Decorex SA on this innovative project.

“As the only industry body that exists to support the kitchen industry, the KSA has always prided itself in having members that strive for the best quality and service. Now, as part of the Franke ‘Make it Wonderful’ Kitchen Design Project, they will get the opportunity to truly push the boundaries of design. It is vital to the KSA that our name is recognisable to consumers as a mark of professionalism, safety and recourse. By endorsing a project like this we not only heighten consumer awareness about the KSA, and what we do, but also support the industry as they strive to showcase exactly what the South African kitchen industry is capable of.” One of the biggest trends in kitchen design over recent years has been the shift from pure utilitarian workspace to social living room and this essential aspect of all our lifestyles will form an important part of the Project.

THE STANDS WILL BE JUDGED BY A PANEL OF

EXPERTS AND THE CREATOR OF THE WINNING KITCHEN

DESIGN WILL RECEIVE A PRIZE OF R10 000-WORTH

| 16 | feature

Four hard-hitting kitchen designs are the focus of the feature. Says Casey: “With living space at a premium nowadays, compact kitchens are an increasing reality, presenting the challenge of creating functional yet beautiful small work

places fitted with hardworking multifunctional tools. The key here is to not allow space constrictions to limit the possibilities of design and, instead, to create kitchens in which performance and aesthetics are in perfect harmony.”

Add to smart design, versatile ergonomics. Casey continues: “Another major trend is the current focus on efficiency, where every area within the kitchen – and every product in it – is maximised to the full. Take the crucial positioning of the sink and cooking appliances, for instance – these are the most utilised areas in the kitchen yet, all too often, are neglected in the design. Good ergonomics is about creating a seamless flow from one workspace to the next and, indeed, a seamless flow between the kitchen itself and the rest of the house.”

Greening is another of the big themes: “Think recycled materials, earth-friendly products and plenty of natural light, with the aim of literally bringing the garden into the kitchen,” hints Casey.

And, in line with eco-chic design, expect an emphasis on timber in natural, earthy tones, textures and finishes. “Authenticity is the abiding theme here,” Casey explains, adding that the intended look is warm and inviting on the one hand, and deeply personal on the other.”

That said, Casey is quick to point out that a return to nature by no means signals a disregard for the conveniences of modern-day living. “Technology plays a key role in our lives and its entry into our kitchens continues unabated,” she maintains. IMAGES COURTESY OF FRANKE KITCHEN SYSTEMS

SPOTLIGHT ON designerFRANS ALEXANDER

Page 21: Detail - Decorex Durban show journal 2015

| 19 | feature

“A sophisticated design direction that draws from traditional elements but also exudes an edgy twist and leaves behind the expected.” This is how KwaZulu-Natal interior designer Frans Alexander describes his signature style, and it’s this quirky fusion of classic and contemporary that visitors to Decorex Durban can expect to see from the special installation that he has created here.

Frans collaborated with leading local textile house, Home Fabrics, on the space that he was invited to create in this year’s prestigious “Decorex Designer Spotlight” feature.

“I’ve always favoured a style that is at once refined and daring,” says Frans. “The friction that exists between traditional and modern is what drives me creatively.”

Frans, who has chosen a lounge-dining room scene for his stand, has combined seemingly unsuited raw wood and earthy, organic textures with futuristic Perspex,

opulent metallics and pops of electric colour. “The palette has predominantly indulged the dark, smoky side of the spectrum, with shades that are neutral but still a bit gritty,” he explains.

“Frans’ glamour-chic style has an easy affinity with the stylish new collections on offer from Clarke & Clarke in the UK,” says Marc Shotland, Group PR and Marketing Executive of Home Fabrics, local stockist of the exclusive product range. “Think rich embroidered damasks, luscious velvets and woven jacquards in sophisticated neutrals like chartreuse, ebony and ash, all brought to life with bold geometrics and metallic weaves.”

“Superimpose these, then, onto walls dressed in Clarke & Clarke’s Reflections range of embossed vinyl papers,” continues Marc. “With designs inspired by natural forms and landscapes and names like Tree Bark, Sandstone and Chinchilla, this stand-out collection is grounded in neutral shades of ivory, taupe and grey and then printed with metallic highlights of copper, silver and gold, making it a sophisticated choice for walls and bang on trend for 2015.”

With a 13-year business that offers a full turnkey service, be it designing from the ground up, coordinating with architects and contractors, or refreshing a pre-existing interior with creative inspiration, Frans brings a wealth of experience to his “Decorex Designer Spotlight” showcase.

Frans’ design mantra, meanwhile, is to create “interiors that are unique and reflect the client’s personality, but still remain functional, timeless and comfortable.” Never one to shy away from rocking the design boat, however, he says that visitors to this year’s Decorex Durban are treated to a “gutsy approach that stylises the traditional with a tension of dramatic, moody tones and glamorous, shimmering surfaces.”
