- Know why adults take risks on the use of herbal medicines even without approved therapeutic claims

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study was conducted to identify the determinants why people practice the usage of

alternative medications.

And to answer these questions:

1.What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

- age, sex, educational attainment, civil status, social economic status

2. What are the determinants of herbal medicine utilization?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATUREThe reasons why people resort to complementary

medicine are based on both rational nd emotional fctors. Relying upon recommendations of their family and friends, holistic treatment, mild treatment dissatisfaction of conventional medicine, fewer side effects and lower costs are the few reasons given by adult CAM patients (Wapf and Busato 2007)

Belief that herbal drugs are free from side effects , can save money more (Braz Med Biol Res, 2005)

Herbal medicines do not necessarily mean safe for users always (Ipsum, 2009)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGYResearch Design:Causal-Comparative Descriptive Type - aims to discover possible cause

and effects of a behavioral pattern

Research Locale: - Labangon, Mabolo, Buhisan,

Busay

Research Respondents: 30 adults from each selected

barangay (15 users of herbal medicines and 15 non-users)

Research Instruments:Interview -structured type of questions

CONCLUSIONBased on the research findings, the following

determinants were defined to be the influence why people decide to utilize herbal medications. The greatest determinant was found out to be cultural and lifeways. It was followed by kinship and social factors. The third determinant that followed is the educational factor. These three determinants were found out to be the greatest influential factors for people to use herbal medications.

RECOMMENDATIONSThat the family influence in the usage of

herbal medications should be preserved and should be enhanced by instilling more knowledge regarding these herbal medications, how these medications work and how they can be used in different situations.

That information regarding the 10 herbal medications being approved by the Department of health should be thoroughly discussed to both the health care practitioners and the consumers in order to give more knowledge to the people about alternative medications.

That proper usage of herbal medications should be described during teachings in schools, health centers and other institutions that promote health in order to rule out beliefs and to facilitate learning.

That teaching regarding different herbal medications should be made in different areas not only those areas with easy access to technology but also to remote areas where they can put to consideration the practice in the usage of herbal medications.
