WEEKLY RELEASE

With two playoff appearances in his first three years, Jim Caldwell has established himself as one of the most successful head coaches in recent franchise history. His 27 wins are the most ever by a Lions head coach over his first three seasons and his winning percentage of .563 (27-21) is the highest by any Lions head coach in the Super Bowl era. With a 26-19 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, Caldwell earned his 50th career regular season win as an NFL head coach. In six seasons, including three in Indianapolis, he has accumulated a record of 53-43 (.552 pct.) in 96 games, and he has led teams to the postseason in four of his six seasons. Beginning his football coaching career in 1977 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, 2017 marks Caldwell's 40th consecutive season coaching football.LIONS FINISH 9-7 IN 2016, EARN PLAYOFF BERTHThe Lions finished the 2016 season with a record of 9-7 and earned the team’s second playoff berth in the past three seasons. The last time the Lions made the playoffs twice in a three-year span was 1997 and 1999.

¾By earning a playoff berth in 2016, Caldwell joins Buddy Parker (1952, 1953) and Bobby Ross (1997, 1999) as the only coaches in Lions history to lead the team to the playoffs twice in their first three seasons with the club.

EIGHT COMEBACK WINS IN 2016The Lions finished the 2016 season with a record of 9-7. In eight of the team's nine wins, the Lions trailed in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game. Detroit set a new NFL record, surpassing the previous total of seven set by the 2009 Indianapolis Colts (also coached by Jim Caldwell), for the most wins in a season after trailing in the fourth quarter.REACHING 50 WINSWith a 26-19 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (11/20), Caldwell, currently at 53, earned his 50th career regular season win as an NFL head coach. In six seasons, he has accumulated a record of 53-43 (.552 pct) in 96 games.

¾25 WITH THE LIONS: The 16-13 win over the Vikings (11/24) gave Coach Caldwell his 25th win as head coach of the Lions. He became the third head coach in team history to reach 25+ wins in a coach’s first 50 games. He reached 25 wins in his 43rd game with the Lions, joining Buddy Parker (35 from 1951-55) and Potsy Clark (33 from 1931-34) as the only Lions head coaches to win 25 games in their first 50 with the Lions.

COACHING OVERVIEW ¾Hired as head coach for the Detroit Lions January 14, 2014. ¾ In 16 previous NFL seasons, Caldwell has worked on coaching staffs that have led teams to 13 winning seasons and only twice finished below .500. Overall, Caldwell’s teams he coached for have compiled a 165-91 regular season record, along with 14 playoff appearances, eight division titles, three conference championships and two Super Bowl wins. ¾As an NFL head coach (six seasons), Caldwell has led a team to 11+ wins twice (14 with Indianapolis in 2009, 11 with Detroit in 2014). Coached in three Super Bowls with Indianapolis (XLI and XLIV) and Baltimore (XLVII) and won two Super Bowl titles (Ind and Bal). ¾ In his first year as head coach for IND (2009), he won the AFC Championship and led the franchise to Super Bowl XLIV. He became the first NFL coach to win his first 14 games and the fifth rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl. ¾One of four head coaches to produce 24+ regular-season wins and a Super Bowl berth in their first two career seasons as head coach. ¾ From 2003-09, Caldwell was the Colts quarterbacks coach and was also promoted to assistant head coach and associate head coach during that time. He worked closely with QB Peyton Manning and the team’s quarterbacks. During that span, Indianapolis set NFL records with seven consecutive seasons finishing with 11+ wins (6, Dallas 1976-81) and 12+ victories (4, Dallas, 1992-95). ¾After being appointed Ravens offensive coordinator in December 2012, Baltimore went on to win five of its next seven games, including Super Bowl XLVII. During that span, the offense averaged 400.6 yards per game, including an average of 410.3 yards per game during the four playoff wins.

QUINN MAKES HIS MARKBOB QUINNExecutive Vice President andGeneral ManagerYears with Lions: 2Years in NFL: 18

NEW TO DETROIT IN 2017FIRST SEASON AT THE HELMQuinn’s first season in the role of a franchise’s top football executive culminated in a playoff appearance, and he became the only first-year executive among nine in the NFL to accomplish this feat since the 2013 season. In doing so, Quinn also became the Lions’ first general manager to guide the team to the playoffs in his inaugural season since Nick Kerbawy in 1952.

¾Along with the nearly 40-percent changeover and upgrade to the team’s roster that he inherited, Quinn’s changes paid dividends in 2016 when the Lions finished 9-7 on the team’s way to the playoffs. ¾Entering his second season, Quinn’s ongoing commitment to improve all aspects of the club’s football operations has included restructuring the player personnel department and scouting evaluation processes; renovating the team’s weight room and practice fields along with other facility improvements; upgrading the team’s football information and video technology; and instituting a comprehensive nutritional program, which included the hiring of a performance dietician for the players.

DRAFTING EXPERTISEQuinn's initial draft class in 2016 featured the selection of six linemen on offense and defense, the most linemen in a Lions draft since 1989 and the most ever in a seven-round draft. Highlighting last year’s draft class was the Lions’ first-round selection T Taylor Decker, who earned all-rookie honors in 2016. Additionally, DT A’Shawn Robinson and C/G Graham Glasgow would earn starting roles during their rookie seasons.

¾Of the 12 playoff teams in 2016, no team had members of its draft class play more games (108) than the Detroit Lions.

PATRIOTS PASTDuring his time with New England, Quinn served a number of roles in the player personnel department, including most recently as Director of Pro Scouting from 2012-15. While he worked as Director of Pro Scouting, the Patriots won the 2014 Super Bowl and four-straight AFC East Division championships.

¾ From 2009-2012, Quinn was the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel. For the previous nine years, Quinn worked in several different capacities within the Patriots player personnel department, including roles in college scouting as a National Scout and Regional Scout. He played an integral role in evaluating and procuring talent for the team through

the NFL draft process, free agency, trades, etc. ¾While working for the New England Patriots, he helped contribute to one of the most impressive stretches in NFL history, one that produced four Super Bowl titles, including the most recent championship in 2014 (Super Bowl XLIX). Since 2000, Quinn’s first year with New England, the Patriots have won six AFC Championships, 13 AFC East titles, 12+ games in a season 10 times (which includes the past six years) and 10+ games in 14 of his 16 seasons.

COLLEGE CONNECTIONS ¾ Lions T Cyrus Kouandjio and Patriots CB Cyrus Jonesplayed on opposite sides of the ball at Alabama from2012-2013. Together, they won a National Championship in 2013. Jones was also Crimson Tide teammates with Lions DT A’Shawn Robinson from 2013-15. ¾Patriots S Patrick Chung and Lions DT Haloti Ngata were teammates at Oregon for the 2004 season. ¾ From 2011-13, Patriots DL Trey Flowers and Lions C Travis Swanson played on the opposite sides of the ball whileat Arkansas. ¾ Lions DE Ezekiel Ansah and Patriots LB Kyle Van Noy were on the same BYU defense from 2010-12. ¾ Lions RB Ameer Abdullah split carries with Patriots RB Rex Burkhead while at Nebraska during the 2011-12 seasons.

COACHING/FRONT OFFICE CONNECTIONS ¾ Lions Executive Vice President & General Manager Bob Quinn spent 16 seasons (2000-15) with New Englandserving in a variety of roles, including director of proscouting and assistant director of pro personnel. ¾Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick joined the Lionscoaching staff in 1976 as an assistant special teamscoach. His also went on to coach the Lions wide receivers and tight ends in 1977. ¾ Lions Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Harold Nash served in the same capacity for New England from 2005-15. ¾ Lions Defensive Assistant-Special Projects Coach George Godsey served as the tight ends coach for the Patriotsfrom 2012-13, as well as the team’s offensive assistantduring the 2011 season. ¾Patriots Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia was on thesame coaching staff as Lions Running Backs Coach David Walker at Syracuse during the 2001-03 seasons. ¾Several members of the Lions front office and footballadministration also spent time with the Patriotsorganization during their careers, including Lions VicePresident of Player Personnel Kyle O'Brien (2002-11),Chief of Staff-Assistant to the General Manager Kevin Anderson (2006-15), Area Scout Jay Muraco (2000-08)and College Scout Ron Miles (2015).

D-LINE CONTINUES TO SHINEThe Lions defensive line continued its impressive form after only conceding six points in the Lions' 16-6 victory over the New York Jets Saturday night at Ford Field. As a unit, the defense held the Jets to just 241 total yards in the game with 85 of those yards coming on the ground and 156 through the air. The victory highlighted a defensive effort that did not allow the Jets to find the end zone.

Collectively, the defensive unit compiled three sacks, five tackles for loss, one interception, and one forced fumble. Part of the defensive line's recent success can be accredited to newly-added DE Cornelius Washington, who ended the day with three tackles and one sack.

Washington on the defensive line's performance against the Jets: “We did well at times. Not as well as we should have in other spots of the game, but we did pretty good. First half went well, we were able to hold him like I was telling her, able to hold them for the second week in a row, hold a team to not being able to score against us. So, as a defense, that’s something you can kind of hang your head on every week.”

Washington on the overall defensive performance: “I felt like we played well. We played very well. There was a couple times where I know that I should have gotten off the ball a little harder, set the edge a little better. So, I think we can improve in that area, just kind of setting the edge, playing a little more physical, little more tough at times. But other than that, I think we all played pretty well.”

Another reason for the defensive line's recharged energy stems from yet another addition to the defense this season, DT Akeem Spence, who came to the Lions as a free agent signing following four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spence ended his night with two total tackles, one of those coming from a sack. Though it was exhibition action, Spence’s goal was to generate pressure and grow comfortable in his new-found role in Detroit’s defense.

Spence on fitting in with the Lions defensive schemes this season: “Especially in free-agency, just talking to Coach Kris (Kocurek), had a long conversation with him over the phone speaking to him about the opportunities that Detroit presented. The way they play it, the D-tackles, we get up-field, we cause havoc. I don’t know too many defensive tackles, that with the freedom that we have here, wouldn’t want to be a part of it. When the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it.”

Spence on having fun with his teammates on the field: “That’s how you play this game. If you are not having fun, then why play it? That is my mentality. I’m trying to bring that game and instill that in everybody. When we’re out there and you all make some plays, I’m going to be the first one over there to pick them up off the ground and high-five because that was a great play. You keep doing that enough and guys will start making plays all over the field. That will transfer over to the offense, you know, they will start making big plays down the field. That’s how you start winning ball games.”

OFFENSE STRUTS ITS STUFFThe Lions’ second preseason game of the season showed that the first-team offense is developing continuity as the season approaches. The offense continues to evolve in hopes to display a versatile approach on the cusps of the 2017 regular season. On the offense’s first play from scrimmage, Lions QB Matthew Stafford effectively showcased a play-action to RB Ameer Abdullah before connecting with WR Golden Tate down the sideline. The 18-yard completion setup the very next play for a six-yard handoff to Abdullah. While just a sample size of Detroit’s planned attack for 2017, the offensive unit hopes to have many opportunities to diversify its playbook.

Stafford on the effectiveness of the play-action: “Yeah, I think obviously, the better we run the ball, the better those are going to be. Started off with one tonight out of the gate and I thought the next couple times we handed the ball to Ameer (Abdullah), he did a nice job, too. They go hand in hand. Obviously a lot of play-action passes you’ve got some chances to take some shots down the field, make some big plays and we did that a little bit tonight.”

Stafford and WR Marvin Jones Jr. connected early in the second quarter, scoring the first touchdown of the preseason for the first-team offense. Stafford and Jones are back for their second year as a quarterback and receiver duo and primed to improve upon last year's success.

Stafford on continuing to build chemistry with Jones Jr.: “Just another year under our belt, I think another year in the system for him, another year in the system for me. I thought really all our guys on the outside played well today, caught the ball at a high rate, which was a good thing. Golden (Tate) obviously had a couple nice catches as well. Marvin played really well, so we’ll look at the tape. Always stuff to clean up, but those guys played well.”

Stafford on Jones Jr.’s practice style carrying over into the game: “He does a nice job with body control, man. His body control is pretty outrageous. By the sidelines he’s always got a knack for finding a way to get that last, little foot in or whatever it is. He did it again tonight with the fade.”

Stafford wasn’t the only one that spoke highly on Jones Jr. Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell also noticed the second-year Lion and his progression from last year to this year. Jones Jr. finished the game with most targets of any receiver on the night and totaled four receptions for 34 yards and one touchdown.

Caldwell on Jones Jr.’s production from early last season to this season: “Yeah, I think that one of the things that you’ll notice about him is he’s, to me when I look at him and watch him practice, he’s better than he was a year ago. He’s coming out of cuts better. He’s running better routes … I think the big thing is no huge physical differences. But I think he’s better in terms of his cuts within the system. Often times, it takes a guy a little time to kind of get accustomed to a system. And I think now he’s grown a little bit better within it and it takes a little time. But I can see improvement from him that’s for sure.”

Jones Jr. on what the offense can accomplish this season: “It can be great, obviously. Our goal, every time is to be the best offense and bring out the best us. Every game, game in and game out, we are all comfortable. We all know that, that’s what we are supposed to be. We need to be like that. It’s a little snapshot of some success. We have a couple more games to go and we’ll go from there.”

QB Matthew Stafford set a new team single-season passing record for percentage of passes intercepted last season. In 16 games, he compiled an interception percentage of 1.7 (594 attempts, 10 interceptions). He broke the Lions record among qualifying quarterbacks (min. 224 attempts/14 att. per team game) that was set in 1998 by QB Charlie Batch (2.0 pct; 303 attempts, 6 interceptions).

8With a win over Chicago in Week 14, Detroit set a new NFL record, surpassing the previous total of seven set by the 2009 Indianapolis Colts (also coached by Jim Caldwell), for the most wins in a season after trailing in the fourth quarter.

10With DE Ezekiel Ansah and DE Anthony Zettel each recording a sack in Week 15 at NYG (12/18), 2016 marked the third-consecutive season (2014-16) that the Lions have had 10 players record at least one sack. Detroit finished the 2016 season with 11 players recording at least one sack.

15With 15 giveaways last season (10 interceptions, 5 lost fumbles), the Lions set a new franchise record for fewest giveaways in a single-season since 1940. Last year’s total surpassed the team’s previous best mark for fewest single-season giveaways of 20 accomplished twice (2014, 2004).

31In 2016, K Matt Prater connected on a career-high 31 field goals, which includes his 54-yarder against the Packers. His 31 field goals rank as the third-highest single-season total in team history behind K Jason Hanson (34 in 1993 and 32 in 2012).

44.2P Sam Martin finished the 2016 season with a 44.2 net punting average as he re-set the Lions record for net punting average in a season by passing the 42.0 average he established in 2015. By finishing the season with a +40.0 net punting average, he accomplished this for the fourth-consecutive season. Martin’s 44.2 net putting average ranks as the third-best single-season total in NFL history since the statistic first became official in 1976.

50WR Golden Tate (91), WR Anquan Boldin (67), TE Eric Ebron (61), WR Marvin Jones Jr. (55) and RB Theo Riddick (53) each totaled 50+ catches in 2016. The Lions became the fifth team in NFL history, and first in franchise history, to feature five different players with at least 50 catches in a season. Other teams to accomplish this include; 1980 Cleveland Browns, 1994 New England Patriots, 2011 New Orleans Saints and 2013 Denver Broncos.

91WR Golden Tate caught 6 passes for 77 yards against Green Bay and finished the 2016 season with a team-high 91 catches. By recording 91 receptions in 2016, Tate became the second player in team history to record 90+ receptions in three different seasons. He joined WR Herman Moore (123 in 1995, 106 in 1996 and 104 in 1997) as the only Lions receivers to accomplish this feat and to do so in three consecutive seasons.

96QB Matthew Stafford enters his ninth NFL season having started in 96 consecutive games. His 96 consecutive games played rank fourth among all active NFL quarterbacks behind only Eli Manning (199), Philip Rivers (176) and Matt Ryan (115).

132LB Tahir Whitehead collected 7 total tackles in the 2016 season finale vs. Green Bay and finished the year with a team-best 132 tackles. Whitehead became the seventh Lions defensive player (11th time overall) to register 130+ tackles in a single season since 1994.

141The Lions offensive line is slated to feature two new starters on the right side of the offensive line in T Rick Wagner and G T.J. Lang. Both acquired as unrestriced free agents this year, Lang (94) and Wagner (47) have started a combined 141 games during their careers.

196By playing at New Orleans (12/4/16), LS Don Mulhbach surpassed T Jeff Backus (191) for the fourth-most games played in Detroit Lions history. Entering his 14th NFL season, Muhlbach has tallied 196 career games.

711With 61 receptions for 711 yards last season, TE Eric Ebron set new single-season career highs in both receiving categories. Ebron’s 711 receiving yards are now the third-most by a Lions tight end in a single season, and this marks only the third time a Lions tight end has recorded 700+ receiving yards.

930In his first season with the Lions in 2016, WR Marvin Jones Jr. hauled in 55 receptions for 930 yards. He established a new single-season career high, surpassing his previous high of 816 yards in 2015.

30,000With 347 passing yards in the season finale against Green Bay, QB Matthew Stafford surpassed 30,000 yards in the fewest games (109) ever by a quarterback in NFL history. He broke the previous record of 114 set by Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino and QB Kurt Warner.

STAFFORD'S SURGEEntering his ninth NFL season, Lions QB Matthew Stafford has led Detroit's offense to great offensive heights. He already has set single-season and career franchise records and closed in on more Lions career passing marks last season. Additionally, Stafford has finished among the top quarterbacks in the League passing rankings the past five seasons.

30,000 PASSING YARDSWith 347 passing yards in the 2016 season finale against Green Bay, Stafford surpassed 30,000 yards in the fewest games (109) ever by a quarterback in NFL history. He broke the previous record of 114 set by Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino and QB Kurt Warner.

¾Entering year nine, Stafford has thrown for 30,303 yards. He joined Peyton Manning (33,189), Matt Ryan (32,757) and Dan Marino (31,416) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for 30,000 yards in their first eight seasons.

GREAT IN THE FIRST 8Against the Washington Redskins in Week 7's 20-17 victory last season, Stafford played in his 100th regular season game (currently at 109 games).

¾By reaching 100 career games in 2016, Stafford achieved the minimum to qualify among the best passers in NFL history with respect to passing yards per game. Currently with a mark of 278.0 (30,303 yards in 109 games), Stafford now stands in second place on the NFL’s all-time list behind Saints QB Drew Brees (283.7; 66,111 yards in 233 games).

He became the first Lions DE to be named to the Pro Bowl since DE Robert Porcher in 2002.

ANSAH-LUTELY AMONG THE BESTWith one sack at the New York Giants (12/18) last season, Ansah notched his 31st career sack with the Lions and established a new high among Lions defensive players in their first four seasons. GETTIN’ ZIGGY WITH ITOver the past seven seasons, few defensive line units have disrupted opponents in both the passing and running games as the Detroit Lions have. The Lions, under the direction of Defensive Line Coach Kris Kocurek since 2010, feature an attack upfront that first concentrates on stopping the run and then applies heavy pressure on the quarterback.

DOMINANT SINCE 2010Since 2010, the Lions rank fourth in the NFL in sacks by defensive linemen with 222. During that span under Kocurek's guidance, the Lions also rank in the top five for defensive line tackles for loss (342, 2nd), QB hits (544, 1st) and forced fumbles (53, 2nd.).

THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS AND INTO THE RECORD BOOKSPrater connected on a 59-yard field goal to end the first half in the 2015 season finale at Chicago (1/3/16), setting a new team record for the longest field goal in Lions history. Prater’s 59-yarder surpassed the previous record of 56 accomplished twice by K Jason Hanson (Cle 10/8/95; at Car 11/16/08).

¾Prater’s kick was the longest in the history of Soldier Field. Bears K Robbie Gould made the previous long of 58 yards. ¾ In the Week 9 win at Minnesota (11/6) last season, Prater again added to his lore with a 58-yard game-tying field goal with two seconds left to play in regulation. TACKLING SPECIALISTSEntering his ninth season, S Don Carey has cemented himself as the Lions' leading tackler on special teams coverage. In 2016, he was joined by CB Johnson Bademosi, who came to Detroit having already proven himself to be one of the best special teams cover players in the NFL. The team also signed special teams ace LB Nick Bellore this season following a stint with the San Francisco 49ers.

¾ In 2015, Carey led the league in solo special teams tackles with 14, and finished tied for second in total special teams tackles with 16. He led the Lions last season with 11 special teams tackles. ¾Since 2012, the Carey (8th), Bademosi (3rd) and Bellore (4th) all rank in the Top 10 in total special teams tackles during that span.

SERIES NOTES ¾Detroit opened their series vs. the Patriots with a 34-7 victory on September 26, 1971 in Schaefer Stadium (renamed Foxboro Stadium). RB Steve Owens scored two touchdowns for the Lions, including a 74-yard touchdown catch from QB Greg Landry. The Lions also scored a defensive touchdown as LB Mike Lucci returned an interception 25 yards for a score. ¾The fastest touchdown in Lions’ history was scored against the Patriots. S Willie Clay (who later joined the Patriots as a free agent) recovered a New England fumble on the opening kickoff and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown only 11 seconds into the game on September 12, 1993. ¾In the 1993 matchup, Detroit edged New England 19-16 in overtime. The win gave the Lions their first 2-0 start since 1985, and was clinched on Jason Hanson’s fourth field goal of the game, a 38-yarder.
