Deutsche BKK monitors IT with Business Open Source

it-novum Success Story | Deutsche BKK

About Deutsche BKK Deutsche BKK is one of Germany‘s major public health insurers. It is based in Wolfsburg. With 1400 employees and fifty branch offices, it provides extensive health services to nearly one million members. The annual turno-ver amounts to 2.6 billion euros. Deutsche BKK is the result of a merger of three former company-specific health insurers (Deutsche Post, Deutsche Telekom and Volkswagen) that took place in 2003. Now, its services are availa-ble to all.
Deutsche BKK operates two large data centers. The IT infrastructure consists of a multitude of components and servi-
ces that have grown into a complex, heterogeneous IT environment over the years. The health insurer deploys three
different operating systems: Windows, Linux and Novell Netware. Some of these systems are virtualized by means of
VMware. Among the services and technologies being used are: Active Directory, eDirectory, Novell Identity Manage-
ment, Exchange, as well as several database systems and web services.

it-novum Success Story | Deutsche BKK
Replacing HP OpenView with the open source system management solution openITCOCKPIT
In order to monitor the infrastructure, Deutsche BKK makes use of HP OpenView Node Manager. However, in the course
of time, HP OpenView turned out to be too large scale for Deutsche BKK‘s needs.
In addition, the system proved too cumbersome and inflexible. Deutsche BKK therefore began to look for alternatives.

Integration of Racktables and Integration of eDirectory users
In order to integrate Racktables with openITCOCKPIT, it-novum developed a special Racktables import module. Rack-
tables‘ open source structure in combination with the available interfaces made it possible to automate the import of
device data, including operating system and application data. During the initial import process 1800 devices with more
than 6000 related services were successfully and fully automatically imported into openITCOCKPIT. The automated im-
port process (which runs regularly at night) takes changes in the Racktables system into account and propagates them
to openITCOCKPIT. At the client‘s request, it-novum also implemented a manual import feature. After the data has been
imported from Racktables it can be manually adjusted in openITCOCKPIT. Further imports will not change these data.
At Deutsche BKK the IT department makes use of Novell‘s eDirectory directory services to manage user profiles and
permissions. In order to be able to import eDirectory users into openITCOCKPIT, it-novum developed another special
module. The tool will activate eDirectory or AD users directly from the openITCOCKPIT management interface. Another
new feature implemented in openITCOCKPIT is the monitoring of Novell Identity Management, which will synchronize
user data between eDirectory and Active Directory.
Integration of Avocent LANDesk and a flexible system management with open interfaces
At Deutsche BKK, general IT service requests are managed with the help of Avocent LANDesk. To make Avocent LANDesk
an integral part of the monitoring system, it-novum changed the notification system and readied the openITCOCKPIT
server for the processing of incoming e-mails. This bi-directional communication now makes it possible to report IT
problems and to document the confirmations in openITCOCKPIT.
Through the use of openITCOCKPIT, Deutsche BKK has gained considerable flexibility when it comes to monitoring the
IT environment. Since openITCOCKPIT, unlike HP OpenView, is not based on a traditional licensing model, licensing fees
have been eliminated.
However, is not only the cost that makes the open source package such an attractive solution: Because it is based on
Nagios, the full range of Nagios features and functionality can be used through openITCOCKPIT. In contrast to HP‘s
OpenView solution, openITCOCKPIT has an open architecture, providing more flexibility in operation. This openness
enables Deutsche BKK to integrate with third-party systems; something that would not have been possible with HP
OpenView within the same cost and time requirements.
