CAREER DEVELOPER:DEVELOPING YOU

CAREER DEVELOPER CAN BE USED WITHIN AN MPDS OR SRS FRAMEWORK

MPDS SRS

CAREER DEVELOPER

Page 14: Developing You Oct 2017 - Welcome to Near You

DEFINITION OF MPDS:

• The quality assured route to Professional Registration

• Typically 4 Years for CEng or 3 for IEng• The Developing Engineer (DE) is assigned a Mentor

• Quarterly reports and annual assessments will form the basis of the application

• Currently about 300 companies run MPDS

• Accredited, monitored scheme

Page 15: Developing You Oct 2017 - Welcome to Near You

DEFINITION OF SRS:

• Supported Registration Scheme• Can use the same methodology as MPDS – but NOT accredited or monitored

• Typically 4 Years for CEng or 3 for IEng• The Developing Engineer (DE) finds their own in-company mentor

• Quarterly reports and annual assessments can still form the basis of the application

• Currently about 45 companies support SRS

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS AND FURTHER LEARNING

ACADEMIC BENCHMARKThe guideline below applies to qualifications started from 1999 onwards:

FURTHERLEARNING.

• Further Learning is about acquiring additional learning outcomes, typically 2 or 3 modules from an MSc.

• FL is about ensuring the equivalence of an accredited masters programme of study.

• FL is not to be confused with Professional Development, which is about acquiring professional competence. Professional development uses UK-SPEC scoring levels as the criteria for assessing competence.

• Submit a Further Learning plan early.

Further Learning is knowledge gained which will underpin the competence of initial professional development. They are separate from one another.

Page 25: Developing You Oct 2017 - Welcome to Near You

ADVICE ON COMPLETINGFURTHER LEARNING PLAN.• Show how assessment is carried out and by whom.• Show the assessment criteria that will be used.• Show clear difference between the learningoutcomes of the BEng elements and the deeperMasters elements.

• Show that Further Learning is in addition to theusual work based activities that encompass InitialProfessional Development.

• Show a timeline to complete the plan and include acontingency if things go wrong, to extend the planand MPDS.

Testimony from past MPDS Graduate

“MPDS really has been a critical part of my career, without it I

doubt that I would have achieved CEng status when I did.

It gave me a structure to my development and provided a sense of

purpose in my journey to become a professional engineer.”
